I'm an experienced chamber, solo, and orchestral violinist who recently graduated from Juilliard with my Masters degree. I just spent the last few years studying with the Grammy Award-winning Takacs Quartet at CU Boulder. My teaching experience includes 10 years of private teaching as well as several teaching posts with the Juilliard Pre-college program, Aspen Music Festival, and University of Colorado.

My goal in teaching is to help the student achieve their goals, whether that is to have a good time while learning and mastering basic technique for beginning students, or working with more advanced students to develop their unique artistic voice. My teaching style centers around developing proper technique with exercises and scales while also deducing technical experience from pieces and songs.

I took Tom's violin lesson almost 6 years ago when I was visiting the US and trying to find a violin teacher during my staying. I was very lucky to meet Tom on craigslist. Tom is a very talented violinist, I always enjoyed his music when he demonstrated the phrase for me. He gave me many ideas about the music expression and many knowledge that I've never had before. He always encouraged me even if I knew I was not good enough. I still remembered the way he taught me to play the scales with metronome and remembered those fun moments working with him.

My violin instruction emphasizes both good basic technique and expression. If you are a beginner, I can teach you the basics of phrasing, bowing, good posture, how to hold the instrument, progressing from simple exercises to more complex pieces. If you are an intermediate student, I will reinforce good technique, while helping you to find your instrument's voice so that you can express yourself and the music you are playing. I can work with you on both music geared to lessons and what you are playing in ensembles.

“I was a violin student of Julie H. for about a year, during which time I was continually impressed by her preparation, her teaching skills, and her patience. She provided me with helpful written materials before my lessons began, coached me carefully about technique, and made learning an enjoyable experience. Besides being an excellent musician herself, Julie also has an extensive knowledge of many musical styles, from classical to jazz, Celtic to old-timey, so that ...

About Julie
I am a professional musician, specializing in traditional American and Irish music and song; I can, however, also teach classical guitar and beginning-intermediate violin. My CD, "American Stranger," has received critical acclaim and I have authored two books on DADGAD guitar for Mel Bay Publications.

I taught myself guitar at the age of thirteen, but took three years of lessons at Washington University, where I also studied English and French. As an adult I became interested in fingerstyle guitar in open tunings, especially DADGAD. I am, however, happy to teach in standard tuning--including basic guitar proficiency, classical guitar, and "folk" guitar.

I have played violin since I was eleven, taking lessons until the age of sixteen and playing in both high school orchestra and the local youth symphony. I later learned to sus
pend much of my classical technique in order to play both old-time and traditional Irish fiddle as authentically as possible; but I still retain my initial training and apply good basic violin technique to my fiddle and (of course) her violin teaching, while tailoring it to the musical idioms of each of students.

I have also studied voice, which again, however, I have never allowed to interfere with my performance of traditional songs--largely because I had developed a traditional approach to the singing of both American southern mountain repertory and traditional Irish song many years before receiving any formal instruction. This training, however, has given me greater insight into how to get the most out of your voice for almost any style.

I also taught myself to play lap dulcimer, basing my approach on the Eastern Kentucky styles associated with Jean Ritchie, Barbara Edwards, and Anne MacFie—that is, primarily using a small dowel stick or noter to sound the melody, and playing counter-melodies for song accompaniments.

My clawhammer banjo-playing is influenced by various Appalachian instrumentalists and accompanists (including Dock Boggs, Clarence Ashley, Hobart Smith, and Lily May Ledford), but my style is also influenced by years of playing with midwestern and southern-style fiddlers.

I welcome students ages 10 or above, and have learned to adapt my teaching style to the individual student, helping each one to make the most of his or her talents and enthusiasms, while emphasizing sound technique and good practice habits.

I also teach academic subjects, especially English (in which I hold a Ph.D.) and French (in which I hold a B.A.). In English, I emphasize good grammar and solid composition skills and try to get my students as excited as I am about everything from sentence structure to Shakespeare.

Many people are talented as performers but not gifted as instructors - Julie is most definitely both. She uses her keen ear to let you know your strengths, and finds productive ways to help you improve weak points. She lives and breathes traditional music and it is always a true delight to learn from her.

I have been taking lessons in classical style guitar from Julie for about two years. She has patiently brought me through increasingly more difficult technique by choosing a wide variety of challenging but enjoyable pieces to practice. I am gradually working my way up the fret towards the 5th position. She has helped me with theory, including rhythm, the major and minor scales and chord building. Her empathy is a particular blessing for me because of my poor eyesight and the arthritis in my wrists, hands and fingers.”

I felt like I learned more with just my first lesson with Julie than I did in multiple lessons with other instructors.

I am only interested in learning frailing/claw hammer and that is what Julie teaches, and teaches well. Other instructors which I have had in the past only give a nod to claw hammer and want to focus on Scruggs style picking which, while I love listening to it, holds no appeal to me for playing.

I finally have hope that I may actually learn to play banjo.

With me, I like to make sure that the students are going at their own pace and have more of a say so in what they want to do for their goals. Whether it be a classical song they love or learning a hip hop song from the radio, in order to make the experience personal to them I want the student to first identify what they want and use it as a goal to keep lessons productive and fun.

About Leanne
I am a classically trained violinist and performer. I have my own business where I also play Hip Hop, RnB, Jazz, and other genres for events such as parties and weddings. I am currently a junior Music Performance Major at Hampton University but I am originally from Atlanta, GA and I always come home for the summer. I love teaching and spreading the love of music❤️

Want to learn how to play violin but never had the time? Now is your chance. I will work with you in the time frame you need to develop the skills required to play the music that you want to learn. We will work on technical skills, hand placement, music reading, ear training, and rhythmic understanding. Before long, we will be playing the songs that YOU want to learn. I can not wait for us to begin this journey!

About Jacob
I am a singer, pianist, guitarist, and violinist. I graduated from Boyce College with a Bachelors of Music with an emphasis in Voice.

All of my students can expect to learn the technical skills required for their instrument of choice. Once these skills and basic knowledge have been established, we can begin to learn the music that YOU want to perform! I never like to settle for mediocrity and will push you to be the best musician you can possibly be.

I have an extensive amount of experience working with children in many teaching fields, and understand how to teach in a way that they will learn. In addition, I have had an in-depth background check that shows a clean criminal record.

I utilize my musical talents every day for my own song-writing and recording. I have toured and recorded with various other artists and love sharing t
hese skills with others.

My own style is contemporary music, yet I am knowledgeable in many genres and believe that foundation technical skills are required for all styles. I look forward to working with you to achieve your musical dreams!
