Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting.
For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically ...

Lydia is an excellent violin teacher. She has a very gentle, patient demeanor which is so important when working with kids. My daughter started lessons just after turning 5, and though her focus was not always there, Lydia always found ways to keep her learning and engaged. 6 months later, my daughter is much more focused and already playing songs and starting to read music. I think it's important to note that Lydia is very organized, always on time, professional, and pleasant to work with. Very highly recommend!

Those who want to play viola are different- I love teaching people how to play this awesome instrument! The most important things in playing viola are intonation (since the viola often harmonizes with other instruments) and bow control, as that is the key to a good sound. You'll also learn rhythm and how to read music. Come learn the best instrument in the orchestra with me!
*Note: at this time I am only taking on intermediate students, as I can only teach lessons online at this time due to the pandemic. I would consider anyone who has been playing for at least 1 year to be intermediate level.

About Crystal

My name is Crystal and I've played viola for over 25 years. I can teach both violin and viola. I play professionally and just for fun. I have a bachelor's in music from Vanderbilt University where I studied with Kathryn Plummer. l love teaching people of all ages how to make music!

My aim as a teacher is to set students up for success with a relaxed, comfortable technique so that they can produce a beautiful sound soon and become expressive musicians. I believe that people love to do what they can do well! My job is to give students the tools for excellence.

With the knowledge passed down to me from my teachers from the Moscow Conservatory and my passion for helping others learn, I tailor what I teach to the goals, the personality, and the hands of each student. Whether you want to take a traditional classical path towards a professional career, or whether you just want to learn to play for fun, I can help you achieve your goals.

I have been taking lessons with Michael Long for the past two years at CSMA in the Bay area. Michael always speaks clearly and to the point, and I always feel heard. He knows exactly what I need to do to grow into my musicianship and encourages me with interesting exercises, technique tips and tricks, and helped me get rid of a few bad habits. Also, when I broke my wrist this year, he pivoted easily and provided extremely interesting and fun classes involving music history, musicians and performances. I would strongly recommend him as a teacher for all ages and abilities.

My son is a beginner violin player and over the past year, Michael has very patiently nurtured his interest. He was always attentive and found new ways to keep our young son engaged - especially after the classes switched from in-person to online. His support and commitment meant a lot to our son and I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone seeking a violin teacher!

My son James really looks forward to his lessons with Michael every week and his playing has improved with Michael’s teaching!

"We have tried a few instructors for strings and they were not the right fit for us. We finally struck GOLD with Charles! Very professional, not at all condescending with his feedback (this was our problem with a couple others), taught my son things he has not learned in school in terms of correct form/placement of viola, and bow technique. We are very excited for the next lesson!"

"Helen McDermott
Exceptional Violist, Masterful Teacher

Helen McDermott is an exceptionally talented violist who is also a masterful, empathetic teacher. She brings a truly unique combination of technical virtuosity, pedagogical professionalism, and psychological insight into the music studio. I know this from personal experience because I have greatly benefited from being one of her viola students.
Her vast experience as a professional violist gives her a wealth of technical knowledge, not only about how to play the viola but, more importantly, how to play beautiful music with this instrument. She has studied, and continues to study, different teaching methods, drawing from all of these approaches to develop a program of instruction designed to meet each student’s individual needs. She also connects empathetically with her students, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect that alleviates anxiety, thereby allowing genuine learning to take place.
In short, her breadth and depth of expertise, in both musicianship and pedagogy, make her an ideal viola teacher who guides students on their path to realizing their full potential as a violist and as a complete musician."
