My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and I am currently studying for a masters in social work at Walden University.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

I hired Paul last November to help my daughter, Kara, with her middle school NYSSMA audition. Paul assessed my daughter, asking her to play a song she already knew and took notes on what she was already good at and what to improve on. When Paul taught Kara her NYSSMA solo, he was very meticulous, paid much attention to Kara's playing, and taught her techniques on how to correct certain mistakes and methods on how to improve what was already good to make her stick out. On the date of her NYSSMA audition, she was very confident, got a perfect score, and made it into the All-County Band :).
I could not recommend Paul more. His experience and methods of teaching technique especially caught my eye, and is what differentiates him from other instructors. He is very patient, kind, honest, and sits down with you to set realistic expectations and goals and how to achieve them. I still book him today for my daughter who is now in High School and has even made All-State Bands because of Paul. He may be in college, but he has music wisdom way beyond his years!!

I've only had two sessions and I already have a better sense of control over my voice and all the anatomy associated with singing. Rebecca has a non judgemental demeanor which helps students, especially beginners such as myself to feel more comfortable and relaxed. She is knowledgeable and I was impressed with the way she assessed my range, and analyzed my voice in the initial session then set realistic goals to improve my control and the quality of my voice.

As a high school student and later on as an undergraduate student, I faced difficulties with some of my math courses and higher level chemistry courses. The main obstacle to my success in these courses was having teachers who did a poor job of explaining challenging topics. Frustrated and disappointed in my shortcomings, I retook Algebra I in high school and Organic Chemistry I, in college. Repeating these courses with new instructors allowed me a fresh opportunity to learn and master many of the challenging topics I had faced. Due to my hard work and commitment to excellence, I earned 100 in Algebra I, and A+ in Organic Chemistry I.

Among other life lessons, facing these two challenges showed me the power of good instructors, and more importantly, how to approach difficult topics. The best technique to understanding new concept
s is to start with an easy related topic. For example if I ask you what is the atomic radius of periods in the periodic table? To understand the answer, you would need to know the electron affinities of metals and nonmetals. Knowing how metals and nonmetals behave, will allow you to understand electron affinities. In addition, understanding the octet rule and the desired electron state of each atom is essential to answering the question. Lastly, answering the question without understanding why nonmetals radius is smaller than metals is meaningless.

My goal for each tutoring session is to get my student to change the way they approach answering science based questions. While the alternative approach of memorization might be helpful in humanities, it would be fruitless in science or math courses. Once you understand the “why” behind the answer, the next task is to practice working on a variety of questions. To efficiently maximize our time together, I come prepared with worksheets on any challenging topic. At the end of each session, I ask my students what topics they would like me to cover the next session. If applicable, I incorporate relevant regent’s questions.
