I went to Sarah Lawrence College from 1983 to 1987 and studied early music, chamber improvisation and composition. I also attended Berklee School of Music from 1983 to 1984, and studied bass performance, ear training and arranging. My teachers have included Rick Laird (bass), Meyer Kupferman (composition, improvisation and theory), Karl Berger (improvisation), Michael Manring (bass), Adam Nitti (bass) and Chris Tarry (Bass). I was a guitar and bass instructor at School of Rock NYC from 2008 to 2009, and also a volunteer bass instructor at Gerald Veasley's Bass Boot Camp. I am currently an instructor at Come Join The Band which is an after school program that pairs pro musicians with kids to write original music .

I have taught private bass, guitar and ear training/harmony lessons since 1980.

I wasn't Tom's student per se but he and I went over lots of material for our various cover bands and he's a very thorough, patient teacher, very adamant about getting parts exactly right but willing to listen to occasional disagreements. highly recommended!

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldekrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. Voice
I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the students individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal exercise come next, then when the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that the student be part of the process of picking material since the more they personally respond to the material the more apt they are to be engaged in their lessons and the more quickly they will learn. After three to six months they will understand the fundamentals of breathing and relaxation and its importance to proper vocal training. They will have begun the process of extending their range and will understand the principles of performance in song.
Acting
As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on.
Creative and Lyric Writing
I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the must compelling.

Hello! After earning my Bachelor of Music degree in Classical Voice from Hunter College in 2011, I have been working successfully as a singer, voice coach, and academic tutor. As a singer, over the past 8 years I have performed at professional theaters across the country, including Off-Broadway and at the world-renown Carnegie Hall. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

I had the opportunity to work with Douglas a number of times during my tenure as a part-time instructor at SCORE Educational Center. What I noticed about him was that he related very well to the children he worked with - he was a very enthusiastic tutor of English and math! He was most generous with the "high fives" and praise, and he also knew how to get students back on track if their focus strayed. Also, I saw him work very well with the parents; he always took the time to patiently explain lesson plans and students' progress between sessions. I have known Douglas personally for many years. He was the one who encouraged me to work at SCORE Educational Center given my background in Education - I thank him for that because I enjoyed my time there very much while I was able to stay (unfortunately, I had to leave that position for a full-time job elsewhere). SCORE Educational Center is no longer in existence. Douglas currently works as an independent tutor, and given how long I've seen clients stick with him, I have no doubt that they are enjoying the same level of attention and enthusiasm he provided at SCORE. When he speaks about the progress of independent clients and how they respond to him, it is with enthusiasm and a glowing smile. I hired Paul last November to help my daughter, Kara, with her middle school NYSSMA audition. Paul assessed my daughter, asking her to play a song she already knew and took notes on what she was already good at and what to improve on. When Paul taught Kara her NYSSMA solo, he was very meticulous, paid much attention to Kara's playing, and taught her techniques on how to correct certain mistakes and methods on how to improve what was already good to make her stick out. On the date of her NYSSMA audition, she was very confident, got a perfect score, and made it into the All-County Band :).
I could not recommend Paul more. His experience and methods of teaching technique especially caught my eye, and is what differentiates him from other instructors. He is very patient, kind, honest, and sits down with you to set realistic expectations and goals and how to achieve them. I still book him today for my daughter who is now in High School and has even made All-State Bands because of Paul. He may be in college, but he has music wisdom way beyond his years!!
