Hello, my name is Vanessa! I am an experienced Sign Language teacher, specializing with beginner/intermediate students. I have known Sign Language for several years now. I am very flexible when it comes to my curriculum. It all depends on you, the student. I want to help you not only learn signs, but to be able to have full conversations. Try it out yourself!

ASL is an amazing new language to learn. Imagine being able to help Deaf people anywhere you encounter them, speaking to a Deaf family member, teaching your non-verbal child a language easier to learn than any verbal language, or being able to communicate with a friend from across a crowded or silent room.

As an undergraduate, I took ASL as my foreign language. Later, I took my skills to behavior therapy where I used it with non-verbal children as their primary form of communication.

I can teach you the basics: fingerspelling, how to address someone, ask for directions, give directions, and have a simple conversations. Feel confident approaching the Deaf community and begin signing from your very first lesson!

Along with signing, you will also learn social etiquette and history of the Deaf community which is very rich in Austin!

I enjoy using American Sign Language as both a fun creative outlet through interpretation, and as a tool to communicate with members of the Deaf community. I have taught vocabulary and culture to students levels 1-3 and try to add as many relevant cultural insights as possible to my lessons.

Students can expect to focus on fingerspelling, hand shapes, vocabulary, facial expression, body language, and ASL interpretation skills.
