Thomas is an excellent teacher. He taught our 7 year old son piano for the past year and has a ton of patience. He worked very hard to keep him engaged and on task. Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.

In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.

When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

About Michael
Beginning his cello instruction at the age of 8, Michael spent the majority of his early years under the guidance of Nancy Hambleton-Torrente, current director of music for the Yorktown public school districts in Westchester county. During his undergraduate years, he attended Colgate University where he received a B.A. in both Music and Psychology. While at Colgate, Michael had the privilege of studying with cellist Florent Renard-Payen, founder and director of the esteemed Tarob Cello Ensemble. Upon graduation, Michael continued his studies at Montclair State University where he received an Artist Diploma in performance. Under the guidance of Nicholas Tzavaras of the Shanghai String Quartet, Michael performed two solo recitals for the John J. Cali School of Music before further pursuing his studies in the studio of Marc T. Johnson of the
Vermeer Quartet. From 2012 to 2014, Michael served as principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra at Hunter College while concurrently earning a Masters degree in Music Education. He graduated with summa cum laude honors in 2014 and began his teaching career with the New York City Department of Education later that year.

At present, Michael is director of Orchestral activities at P.S. 205 Clarion in Brooklyn N.Y. and principal cellist of the Riverside Orchestra on the upper west side of Manhattan. He runs a full private teaching studio and actively gigs in and around the greater New York City area. My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. Previously he has taught at the Hudson and Fairlawn Schools of Music, Firestone High School, and the Western Reserve Institute of Music. I started working with Andrew after an 18 month hiatus and am very pleased. Andrew's teaching style is very adaptable, which for an adult student who works full time, is great. Some weeks I don't have a lot of time to practice and we focus on technique. Other times, we work on music and technique. He is also great about explaining the "how" and the "why" of why musicians should spend time on scales, technique, etc;
I would absolutely recommend Andrew to adult students and younger student.s

Andrew is an extremely knowledgeable and talented teacher. He explains technique exceptionally well, has an impressive understanding of phrasing and musicality while playing, and is very patient and understanding, he has a great sense of humor, while also giving students the right amount of push they need. He has high expectations but they are always attainable for his students, and he is very flexible with each students unique needs. I highly recommend him as an instructor, he is worth every penny and students always see quick and impressive improvement; I know I did while I studied with him.

Born and raised in Jerusalem Israel, I was always surrounded by music. I started my violin lessons at the age of five and it was my first teacher who instilled the love for music and violin in me. Rachyl is a wonderful teacher. My son has taken both group and solo violin lessons with her. She is very calm and makes lessons fun for the kids, but she is stern when need be to make sure the children follow the rules which is so necessary. She is an amazing teacher, and I highly recommend her to all!
