I'm comfortable teaching the banjo in a variety of styles but will typically start in Bluegrass. I can teach both Scruggs style finger picking and basic to intermediate Clawhammer. My comfort zone is higher in the Scruggs style of playing however.
I also teach beginning to advanced Tenor Banjo (CGDA Tuning). Though it looks similar to the 5-string bluegrass banjo, the Irish Tenor Banjo and Tenor have only 4 strings and are played with a traditional guitar pick (a "plectrum" - though a "plectrum" banjo is tuned different then these other 2) and strummed rather then plucked with individual fingers.
I can teach the Plectrum Banjo as well (CGBD Tuning) but will be teaching you on a 5 string banjo that I only play with four strings.
About Jared
I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

His flexible teaching style was responsive to my musical growth and interests. As we went, Andy sprinkled in some easy to understand music theory. I learned a lot of my favorite songs (including several out of the mainstream). He worked with me to adapt songs written for guitar to banjo. He also helped me to pick quality instruments that were right for me and my budget.

Beginner banjo lessons. Basic technique, chords, strumming. So much fun playing songs!
Disclaimer: I am not a traditional bluegrass player. I am finding many students nowadays that enjoy the sound of banjo, but want to play modern music with it. I have had a great deal of success with this type of student, but advise anyone looking for traditional scruggs lessons to seek that out. Thanks!

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
