I love opera and I love to teach it. I know the repertoire intimately. I am a retired opera singer myself and my students do really well with me!

About Rebecca
I specialize in teaching technique. Through the correct, high placement of vowels and deep breath support I can teach my students to have free, powerful and controlled voices. I teach all genres but I specialize in opera. I was an opera singer myself and I particularly enjoy preparing students for applying to schools to be a voice performance major. I have a student now who is applying to all the top music schools.

Rebecca is not only professional and patient but she is an expert at identifying the best vocal exercises to address your specific weaknesses. She would make a perfect teacher for beginners, experienced singers and anyone in between. I've been a student for about 10 lessons and have noticed a big difference!

I've sung leading roles with companies including Glimmerglass Opera, Caramoor Musical Festival, the Orchestra of St. Lukes and many, many others. My training is in a powerful classical technique that allows for natural, easy and flowing vocal production founded on relaxed, energized breath.

About Nancy
I believe in the extraordinary power of music to communicate, to inspire and, often, to heal. That belief inspires all my work.

My goal is to help you find the power to express express through singing your unique self. It doesn't matter whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's YOUR voice. It has its own sound and characteristics, its own particular beauty, and the world needs to hear you!

Whether you want to be a professional or audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to help you.

I'm a classically trained leading soprano who has had the great good fortune to sing masterpieces with such companies as the Caramoor Music Festival, Glim
merglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and the Manhattan School of Music.

But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, strict classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, yes, but also rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus or sound great on karaoke night.

Above all, the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.

*** Lesson Details ***

I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

*** Specialties ***

For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.

For all singers, I am also a superb acting coach!

I am not a singer, but Nancy was able to make me feel at ease and give me instructions to bring a voice out of me. Very personable and professional, she has many different ideas and exercises to allow a voice to develop. I had one other voice teacher who never even had me learn a song. Nancy is a very capable and valuable teacher. I really can’t recommend her enough!

I am studying to become a professional classical singer. Through my own training, I have discovered that having an amazing teacher – one who is supportive, caring, and hard working, and who will push you and work with you to be better – is the most important tool an aspiring musician can have. I believe that every student is different, as no person's body is the same, and no vocal instrument is the same. Based on my performance in the Teaching of Singing course at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, I was selected to be a voice teacher to non-Conservatory students at Oberlin College. I have now had several students, two of whom, with my assistance, have just been accepted to prestigious summer programs in classical voice. Though I have only been teaching voice to others for a year now, I have been teaching myself alongside my own teachers through practice and independent work for the past nine years, and I have discovered countless techniques and tricks to help every aspect of singing.

About Rachel
I am studying to become a professional classical singer, and am enrolled as a Masters degree candidate in Voice and Opera at Mannes School of Music. Through my own training, I have discovered that having an amazing teacher – one who is supportive, caring, and hard working, and who will push you and work with you to be better – is the most important tool an aspiring musician can have. I believe that every student is different; no person's body is the same, and no vocal instrument is the same.

Based on my performance in the Teaching of Singing course at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where I just graduated with my Bachelors in Music as a Voice Performance major with a Music History minor, I was selected to be a voice teacher to non-Conservatory students at Oberlin College. I have now had several students, two of whom, with my assistan
ce, have just been accepted to prestigious summer programs in classical voice.

I am a native New Yorker, and I am a proud alum of LaGuardia High School, the Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Manhattan School of Music's Pre-College program, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. I am also proud to have received the Graduation award for top vocalist in my year at LaGuardia. All of these programs helped to shape who I am, both as a performer and as a teacher, and I am excited to pass on what I learned.

As a singer myself, I have discovered countless techniques and tricks to help every aspect of singing, as well as the discovery that what works for some people does not necessarily work for others, and that's ok! The voice is individual because it is inherently unique to the person it belongs to. It is the exciting, demanding, and amazing work of a teacher to bring out each individual's voice, and I love discovering a person's voice with them. I can't wait to work with you and find your voice!

Rachel is a great vocal instructor and gave me the confidence to learn and discover my own voice. As a beginner with no experience in vocal training, I was able to learn the basics of posture, setup and breath and of course singing. I enjoyed lessons with Rachel and would highly recommend working with her.

Rachel was extremely patient and could figure out how to help a new singer like me navigate their body and find a true sound. Her positive feedback encouraged me to do better along with her comforting wit and humorous exercises that really made me open up. I believe she was the absolute best person to help me along and open up more than I had ever before and I think if she continues educating that she will do amazing things, and have fun all the while!

Isabel is very professional and fun to work with. In our first few lessons, we worked on solidifying some basic fundamentals of singing (proper breathing, posture, etc.) and have since moved on to some simple songs/arias. She is a wonderful teacher for beginners like me, but with her skill level, I can see her as being an exceptional teacher for more advanced students as well.

Singing is one of the most joyful activities you can do! Anyone can learn to sing.
I love teaching others to sing and perform, and I've been doing so for over 20 years - through private lessons, music theater workshops, music schools and choruses. I work with students where they are at and help them to build a solid technique that works for them.

(The percentage of people who are actually tone deaf is very, very small.)

About Catherine
Catherine has been teaching private lessons since 1995 and is currently available to teach lessons at your home, at her studio, and online. Catherine has helped students develop their voice, audition successfully, and perform with confidence on stage and screen.

Catherine received her education from Boston University where she received a BM degree in Vocal Performance. She was a post-graduate artist at the Boston University Opera Institute and studied in Italy with legendary tenor Carlo Bergonzi. Aside from formal education, Catherine has performed on stages including the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall in concerts, operas, and musicals. Her largest audience was 18,000 when she sang the National Anthem at an NBA game. (Go Spurs!)
As an expert in her field, Catherine looks forward to helping new students achieve their goal
s. Catherine's teaching style is encouraging and enthusiastic.

SINGING IS BREATHING OUT

I call myself a teacher of singing, rather than voice, because singing is an expression of behavior which involves imagination, intention, and musical artistry.

My fundamental principal is to sing with relased flow of breath, without interfering, holding back the breath or darkening the voice. One does not “make” voice; one lets it happen. My students learn (are guided) to release compensatory tensions in the vocal tract and the body, to perceive subtler physical sensations associated with singing, along with increased ease and spontaneity, the feeling that one’s singing is personal.

My studio comprises students of differing ages and proficiencies, from beginner to artist level. My years of teaching at the LaGuardia HS of Performing Arts (the “Fame’ school) helped me to become patient and resourceful with beginners, many of whom are now pursuing distinguished performing careers at the highest level.

About Peter
TEACHER: I've maintained a studio in New York for over twenty years. I taught on the faculties of the 92nd Street Y School of Music, the Laguardia High School of the Arts (the “Fame” school), and taught workshops and MC’s for singers and actors in Greece. At Laguardia HS, I taught singing and directed the Opera Workshop; many of my students have gone on to leading conservatories, and to distinguished performing careers.

I’m a graduate of the Juilliard School (BS) and NYU (MS), and studied privately with Antonia Lavanne, Richard Torigi, Edvin Sazamosi, Renato Capecchi, et al. I attended Oberlin Vocal Pedagogy Institute, Centro Studi Italiani (Urbania, Italy), Montclair Voice Science Workshop, and the NYSTA Professional Development Program, of which I am a Distinguished Professional.

I’m the Treasurer of the New York Singing Teachers
’ Association, and a member of NATS, NYSTA, AMTL, NOA, and Opera America.

PERFORMER: I graduated from the Juilliard School, and New York University, and was a Finalist in the competition of the Center for Contemporary Opera. I’ve sung principal roles with Vineyard Theater, Encompass Theater, Stonington Opera Arts, Vertical Player Repertory, Pensacola Opera, Chattanooga Opera, Rockland Opera, Bronx Opera, and others. Soloist at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium and Weill Recital Hall), the 92nd Street Y, Austrian Cultural Forum, the Actors Studio, and other venues in the United States, Italy, and Switzerland. Press reviews have cited my "warm and persuasive singing,” and described me as "a wonderful singing actor."

In my studio, you will learn to take your space vocally and physically as a performer! We will work on a relaxed and engaged posture (through my experience work with Alexander and Feldenkrais technicians), singing/speaking the truth of the text, and a healthy, bright but warm sound that will wow any audience and audition panel. I also specialize in character work, through my own experience performing Opera and Musical Theatre with such companies as Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Idaho, Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, and Carnegie Hall to name a few. Come join me to have a positive, exciting, and long-lasting vocal journey!

About Peter
Lauded by Opera News as having “showed vocal confidence [...] his luminous head voice blooming with expansive and penetrating phrases“, and by Opera Today as bringing "the performance to an awestruck standstill with his exquisitely sung (aria)... He cuts a fine figure throughout the performance, with an intense stage presence” Peter has performed such roles as Rodolfo (La Bohème), Alfredo (La Traviata), Il Duca di Mantova (Rigoletto), Macduff (Macbeth), Nemorino (l'elisir d'amore), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana), and Justice Scalia in Derrick Wang’s Scalia/Ginsburg, performed at the Supreme Court and featured on NPR’s All Things Considered. Peter has performed in such venues as Santa Fe Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Idaho, Anchorage Opera, Maryland Opera, Lancaster Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Helena Symphony, and Carnegie Hall.

As a t
eacher, students have said about Mr. Peter:
“Peter helped me get to my high notes with a bright sound that felt relaxed and easy” -Brett Andrews, Tenor/Dancer
“Peter’s experience as a performer helped me not only achieve a healthy full sound, but a strong connection to the role through body work and character analysis.” -Abigail Lawsonn, Operatic Soprano
My technique is based on a relaxed but engaged posture, the management of air instead of "pushing" or "shoving" air, a bright but warm sound, and taking your space as a performer, a singer, and a human being.

Trained in Classical Vocal Performance and Music Education, I also have 15 years experience in live performance with Latin music bands. My lessons involve instruction in vocal technique, vocal style, and an array of different repertoire types. In addition to those details, I also integrate teaching musicianship and the lesser taught aspects of performance such as stage presence and proper practice techniques. Singers of all ages and skill levels are very welcome to come and learn in a very judgment and pressure free zone!

About Tito
Music is a very important part of my life, and one of my goals as a musician is to be involved in all different aspects of music. That is why I am active both as a student, performer, and teacher. I prefer to live my life learning and in turn sharing what I have learned to other musical enthusiasts. My experiences in music vary in terms of genre and concentration.

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Vocal Performance and an Advanced Certificate in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. My experiences in classical performance include performing in three Operas to date; Strauss' "Die Fledermaus" (Alfred) , Mozart's "Le Nozze Di Figaro" (Basilio / Curzio), and very recently, Mozart's "The Magic Flute" (Monostatos). Being an active performer gives me great perspective which I intern bring to my lessons
and share with my students.

As well as being a classical performer, I am also the lead singer and musician in a traditional Dominican Merengue band. I have been performing in this aspect for the past 15 years all over the NYC area. Performing in this up-beat Latin music genre is in itself a complete world away from classical performance. My experiences as a Merengue performer has shown me how to be a musician in an environment completely different from the classical music platform; the city club scene.

As you can see, my experiences on both the classical stage and in the club / lounge scene, have allowed me to build up a musical "tool box" of experiences that will enhance my quality of teaching. My music students will be exposed to the knowledge that I have gained from my experiences as a student and performer.

It is most important to me to have an open, encouraging, safe and healthy environment when learning singing. No matter the level, vocal ability or goal for your music lessons, I will meet you where you are at and help you reach your goals. I believe the process of goal setting and accomplishments are steps to success in a lesson and beyond. I am committed to being present and helping you reach whatever is bringing you to lessons.

Being a well rounded singer is very important to me, during my time with students I will incorporate music theory, sight singing, and music history. I want students who come to me to understand what it means to be a singing actor- therefore we will dive into the text, poetry, story and character to bring out an expressive performance. Healthy technique and an understanding of breath will always be our main focus while singing.

About Temple
Music has the power to change and enhance people's lives. When I was 5 years old, I begged my parents for piano lessons until they obliged, and from there it formed the course of my life. I then began singing, and started training as a young teenager in voice. I went on to study at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ for my Bachelor's in Vocal Performance. I have performed all over the world, from Barcelona to Carnegie Hall, and this past summer I was chosen to be a part of the exclusive Classic Lyric Arts program in France, which was a French language and performance intensive.

I moved to NYC after graduating in 2017 to audition and teach. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Vocal Performance at Mannes School of Music and am a student of Diana Soviero. With my background, training, and influence of my own amazing teachers, I h
ave the joy of imparting everything I know to my students.

Temple is such a wonderful teacher. She truly made me feel so supported and encouraged in my lessons. She taught me healthy voice techniques, helped me stop bad habits that I picked up from previous teachers and experiences, and helped me develop better support for my singing. I also really enjoyed that she incorporated theory into my lessons. I highly recommend Temple as a teacher.
