My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David

I have been playing music almost my entire life. I first started on trombone in 4th grade then switched to guitar in 6th. I picked up the electric bass in my later teenage years and learned the upright bass (both jazz and classical) in college. My students get the benefit of my education, as well

Very grateful to have found David on this site and add to the chorus of great reviews. I have entered the world of music through the bass guitar with David's instruction and am already hooked. Bass is a fascinating (and challenging) instrument so I appreciate working with a professional who caters to beginners. I am looking forward to exploring more about music with each lesson and gaining more confidence playing this instrument. Thanks David!

I have been playing the bass guitar as my primary instrument since 2000. I have performed, recorded and written with a number of successful bands in the past. I am happy to take students at any skill level, and for any style. I believe strongly in integrating music theory and ultimately moving students toward musical self-suffiency, rather than focusing exclusively on learning particular pieces.

Methods: Your goals are central to my teaching. I will work with you to make sure we are on the right path to achieving them. I make sure to also get a good grasp of each student's learning style. I make custom learning materials for each lesson, which I spend lots of careful thought and time on to ensure the best experience. It's important that we focus on what you want to learn and have fun doing it! By taking this customized approach, I am able to adapt things and build on them to get you where you want to be. We will also learn songs of your choosing, possibly adapted to your current playing level.

Background: I have been playing for over 15 years and have a degree from Berklee College of Music. I meet you where you are at as a student and go from there. I like to teach methodically, building on new skills each lesson as building blocks towards bigger goals. I assign brief, targeted technical exercises as a venue to work on foundational technical skills, and incorporate these skills as much as possible into musical application. The ultimate goal is to play music and have fun, so technical practice will always be in service of playing the music you want to play. We will look at theory concepts when relevant. I will also incorporate my perspectives on tone, style, ensemble skills, practice skills, and real-world gigging.

I tailor lesson plans based on your musical background, if any, and your goals. I think of lessons as collaborative, working together to figure out what works best for you. I studied academically, and I also grew up playing in punk bands in basements, so I can offer advice and exercises from multiple perspectives. I use both approaches to music fluidly in ...

Fingers or a pick? Why did you you choose electric bass over the guitar? I’ll help you understand the role of a bass guitar and show you basic techniques to those catchy fills that have been remembered for decades.

Beginner level: technique and positioning is paramount. I prefer to use fingers over a pick to begin with but it is purely your choice. I will start from one position (left hand) and work with the right amount of finger strength (both hands), timing of notes, and coordination. A plethora of popular songs can be played in just one spot on the fret!

Next, I will incorporate some simple theory and show you how to move around the fretboard comfortably by shifting or sliding and really emphasize cooperation with the right hand. You want to make those notes shine and “mean it”. You are the band’s “anchor” and you Must listen to your bandmates (even if you are just jamming to your favorite songs).

My goal is to make you feel comfortable in your role and get the ...

"I enjoyed my first bass lesson! It was nice to hear my playing and technique bounced off of someone else, especially since I've been learning by my self since I got my guitar.

The feedback that I would give is that I wish there was more of a plan for my first lesson. I was simply asked to talk about my musical experience, which is fine, but I wish I was asked to play some scales, riffs, intervals etc. Also, we didn't talk very much about knowing goals for the lesson or for music were so the lesson felt a bit undirected. But music is pretty exploratory so I might be a bit harsh."
