I began playing piano at the age of 3 1/2 by ear, listening to music of the 1960s such as The Beatles and Broadway musicals. When I was 15, I started 2 years of classical lessons, and, because my ear was so well developed, was given the opportunity to learn Fur Elise by Beethoven at my second lesson. I had begun teaching the piece to myself after hearing it played on a movie soundtrack. I began my studies at Berklee College of Music in 1979, taking jazz piano and vocal lessons, as well as classes in ear training, theory, and arranging, along with various ensembles and labs. Following my years at Berklee, I played in a number of different bands and had a record produced on which I wrote and sang 4 songs, arranged background vocals, and played piano. This recording received Northeast regional airplay and was one of the highlights of my musical career. I have been teaching piano in the Capital District of New York since 1997, with students ranging in age from 4 to 71, and of various ...

I took lessons with Mary Ann Barker for many years. I have learned many pieces with her, including Beethoven’s Für Elise and Piano Man by Billy Joel. She is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking lessons with her for anyone interested in learning piano.

My 2 10 years old boys have been studying piano for over 3 years. MaryAnn is a great teacher and fabulous with kids
Christine
I am 61 years old, work full-time and have limited time for practicing. I have had 2 previous piano teachers who do not compare to Mary Ann’s level of thoroughness and patience, and ability to diagnose an issue I am having, offering an easy fix, making learning to read music much easier. Most times, it’s a matter of slowing down, setting the metronome to a slower speed. She does not rush me. I “show up” and she encourages and teaches me to have fun.

Lessons consist of learning a solid vocal technique, and learning various repertoire from Broadway, pop, to classical. Also, performing skills will be incorporated, so that the singer feels comfortable acting the song as well. I strongly believe that singers must be actors, and that is what makes us different from instrumentalists. It is also a lot of fun! For children or adults who are willing, I also teach sight singing and spend some of the lessons time learning some basic reading skills.

About Sandra

Sandra began her training at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. She is a two time recipient of the Mario Lanza Award, and holds a B.M. degree in opera from the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts. She studied acting at both the Wilma and Walnut Theaters in Philadelphia. In New York,

I've been seeing Sandra for 7 years and I consistently look forward to my lesson every week. I have seen myself improve tremendously in my singing, acting, and sight-reading. Sandra provides an atmosphere of serious learning in which I have been taught how to control by voice, but she is also very personable and always up for a fun chat. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher!
Linda
Fantastic teacher. I learned so much more in a short time with Sandra than I learned with all the other voice trainers I have had through the years. Her method is rewarding.

I'm enjoying my bass lessons with Rob. He explains every concept thoroughly and always checks in with me to make sure I understand what he's teaching. He responds quickly to any questions I have in between lessons. I also appreciate the notes he provides after every lesson as it gives me something to practice and helps me review what I learned.

I have over 10 years of teaching experience and teach beginning to intermediate violin lessons. Violin was the first instrument I learned to play and I especially enjoy working with beginning string players. Developing a good ear for pitches and proper playing technique are extremely important for violinists and I focus on these areas foremost. Each lesson is customized for the student’s age, interest, and technical level.

"Serena was FANTASTIC. I did a week of hour-long singing lessons with her to learn a very difficult song to sing in front of a crowd. Before the lessons, I had no singing experience (and practically sounded like I was tone deaf -- every time I tried karaoke, the sound booth would turn my microphone down so everyone didn't leave the bar). After 5 lessons with Serena, my singing was miraculously not only tolerable, but actually impressed everyone who heard it. Serena also gave me the confidence to get through the song without panicking from nervousness. I highly recommend her."

"My son was 5 years old when he began piano lessons with Ms. Melody. Each week, he was eager to go to the lessons and always had big smile on his face after the lessons. Through the lessons, he learned how to read music notes and play songs beautifully at recitals. Ms. Melody is fun and firm in teaching. She’s the perfect teacher to unlock a child’s potential. We really appreciate Ms. Melody for opening music to our son and our family."

The Ins and Outs of Cadences for Piano Players

What are piano cadences, and how are they used? Learn the ins and outs in this guest post by Manassas, VA teacher Carol K...   When I first decided to tackle the word “cadence,” I thought to myself – “What exactly do I think of when I hear that word?” For me, the word implies an ending, or rhythmic inflection of sound, like the modulation of the voice in reading or speaking. This article will examine, in greater detail, what a cadence means to musicians, the types of caden …
