With over 20 years teaching experience, Nick is patient with children & adults. He has a creative, unique pedagogy emphasizing hearing through singing, ear-training & natural, organic listening. Nick instills healthy absorption of music while students have fun learning their music, sight reading, internalizing with focus on rhythm and time.
As a student, you will get to work on music that you, the student select as well as work on sight-reading, technique, ear-training. We will also work out of method books and use other sources of information.

I went to Sarah Lawrence College from 1983 to 1987 and studied early music, chamber improvisation and composition. I also attended Berklee School of Music from 1983 to 1984, and studied bass performance, ear training and arranging. My teachers have included Rick Laird (bass), Meyer Kupferman (composition, improvisation and theory), Karl Berger (improvisation), Michael Manring (bass), Adam Nitti (bass) and Chris Tarry (Bass). I wasn't Tom's student per se but he and I went over lots of material for our various cover bands and he's a very thorough, patient teacher, very adamant about getting parts exactly right but willing to listen to occasional disagreements. highly recommended!

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

Theory and ear training lessons are great for instrumentalists - including voice - as well as those that have never played an instrument (spoiler alert: you'll end up learning a little piano or another instrument in the process!)

Anything that is learned "theoretically" is most useful if you understand it aurally - so that you you become free to improvise or compose with it - so every theory lesson is simultaneously an ear training lesson.

Beginners typically start with simple songs, basic tonality and chord functions/scales, basic rhythm/meter, and advanced students work on things like interval training, singing atonal melodies, hearing chords with 5 or more notes, advanced chord progressions, non-western music theory/aural skills, polyrhythms, analyzing any crazy music they are often interested in, etc. At every level, we connect what we're working on with music we're listening to and explore: what exactly is going on in this music?

My approach to music theory is that it should be learned by doing - being told what an Italian Sixth chord doesn't do you much good if you can't apply it in your own music. To that end, we'll spend time on close listening, sight-singing, dictation, rhythm games, etc., and minimal time with textbooks.

I am a composer, guitarist, arranger, engraver, and songwriter located in Brooklyn. I completed an M.M. in Composition at the Yale School of Music in 2014, and have taught extensively for the past eight years in a variety of settings. I currently teach guitar at Saint David's School in Manhattan, and taught private composition lessons and TA'd electronic music courses at Yale. I've also taught guitar and musicianship in public elementary and high schools in San Francisco and New Haven, as well as several music schools and my own private guitar studio.

WHen it comes to teaching music theory there is no secret. I go through the material step by step and make sure that the student is always learning every week. At the end of 2 months period, the beginner student should have a greater idea of harmony concepts and how to analyze music. Lessons are very relaxed and we will focus on ways to practice and getting the student to learn what he/she wants. Some people just want to come and learn a few tunes, some want to really learn the instrument and practice all the time. It all depends on the individual and I`m more than ready to adapt for each one of my students with the methods I have.
On our first class we will spend some time discussing what are the goals of the student and I will formulate a good plan so we can reach those goals in no time

I usually have 3 main paths that the student can choose.
1st - Learn the instrument enough so you can play your favorite songs and have fun with friends.
2nd(most requested) - Learn the instrument from scratch. Study technique, repertoire, a little of reading and music theory and learn how to improvise. This will allow the person to have their own tools to study on their own after attending classes with me.
3rd - Usually people who have been playing before like this one. We will go deep in music theory, ear training, reading, improvising and technique. Always leaning challenging tunes that will develop the student skills. This one allows the student to follow a professional path on the future, or maybe go into a music college.

Classes can take place at my studio or at your own location with an extra fee for transportation.

For children under 18 parents are more than welcome to stay for the classes, tell me if there is any specific goal you are looking for or talk about any subject that you might want.

I also help people to prepare for auditions. For this subject, I will tell you how to get ready for an audition. Music Theory is just like grammar - the grammar of music. Don't let that scare you! Studying at the Mannes School of Music (a conservatory notorious for its very intense Music Theory classes) I have learned great strategies for tackling its difficulty. I will break down complex chordal harmony or counterpoint and give simple steps in order for you to completely understand the material. Or maybe you have no background in Music Theory - that is great too! I can start simply with learning how to reading music. A good foundation is very necessary! :)

My personal philosophy of music is to explore and learn as much from my students as I can teach them. For me teaching is like going on an adventure to find something together. I've been able to play all over the world and tour with many different musicians and the thing that made the core of every great performance was the human interaction and communication. For me music is about being more human. This is something I just as much try to impart and teach in my lessons as theory and technique.
