I have taught voice at the University of Southern California and have worked with the singers from the Met in NYC. I have collaborated with opera singers from the faculty of the Eastman School to such luminary as Marilyn Horne who has sang at LaScala, the Met and for 5 presidents of the United States at the White House. My collaboration to bring awareness to singing continued with conversations broadcast over the airwaves with Tony Randall. I have composed for voice and my compositions have been premiered at Lincoln Center by the Wagnerian singer in a Salon for the entire choir of the Metropolitan Opera House. My vocal compositions and performances range from premieres at the Dickens Festival in Texas, NY to broadcasts on NPR.

I have worked with Doctoral students in voice and with the little children who's voice has not yet set. Each is a unique experience and a treasure of nature. I look forward to guiding you on your journey of self discovery of that amazing instrument ...

Joseph has a wealth of knowledge about speaking, listening, vocals, etc.

He created a welcoming environment in our online lessons that made it easy to be vulnerable and get right to working on new skills.

I highly recommend for others looking to better understand their voice and communication style, and learn to hone them.

Joseph put us at ease immediately. Our first lesson included valuable information on how to warm up our voices, increase our range and protect our voices. We look forward to our next lesson.

I have been studying piano with Joseph for nearly five years. In that time, I’ve learned more about the piano and musical interpretation than I ever thought possible.

Joseph’s technical ‘short cuts’ are amazing! He illustrates ways for your hands and your mind to work that are tailor made for you. Learning from him is so fun it seems almost effortless.

The way Joseph teaches allows you to develop at your own pace. The atmosphere is always relaxed yet everything moves along quickly.

At the open classes I attend, his other students are progressing very rapidly too. After each class, we share our impressions. The mood is elated because it feels like we stepped back in time and into history.

Joseph often quotes inspired wisdom of his historic teachers in our lessons. He is a great inspiration on his own with great musical insights.

I’m playing Beethoven and Chopin works I never thought I could approach at this stage of study, with great depth of understanding. I now play with greater passion and skill, get compliments from everyone I play for, and no longer worry about playing in public.

I look forward to each and every lesson with Joseph. His encouragement and support makes learning so rewarding! Anyone who finds this musical treasure is a lucky person and I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Michelle & Robert were amazing & worked so well with my daughter for her first lesson! They are very organized & make her “homework” easy for me!:-)We look forward to the next lesson!
Faith
I have been a student of Michelle and Robert since August of 2016. I originally
reached out to them to help my performance in school musicals as well as start the training process to one day become a professional musical theatre actress. What I ended up getting was that and so much more.

Whatever opportunity I took, they were there supporting me every step of the way. They made sure I was prepared for anything: auditions, performances, competitions, solos, and much more. Each year I am astounded at the chances they give me to become a more well rounded performer, and at the high level of progress I make with them in a small amount of time. They helped uncover amazing things about myself I never dreamed of finding out.

As a student on the autism spectrum I had a lot of insecurities about working in a
different and more private setting. Michelle and Robert’s care and dedication almost immediately wiped away those fears. Every lesson I felt encouraged to show my true self and was supported during the more vulnerable moments. The work they have done with their students with disabilities is something beyond praise.

4 years have passed with these amazing teachers, and I feel more prepared than
ever for my future career in performing. I would highly recommend Michelle and Robert for any students with disabilities, aspiring musical theatre actors, or any general music fanatics with a strong will to learn!

Love Michelle and Robert's class. They are super encouraging and very knowledgable. I have been taking vocal lessons with them for two months and already seeing a lot of improvements. Really enjoy the classes! I am normally a 'afraid of teachers' person, but taking classes with Michelle and Robert has been so much fun that I feel absolutely comfortable! Love it! Recommend to everyone!

In my Voice lessons I use a combination of excersises and pieces. Student will be expected to practice from the Vaccai vocal studies book as well as learn classical songs in English, Italian, and German. If there is any musical theater pieces that a student is interested in or must learn for a theater class, we can of course learn those as well.
In addition to this I also teach Solfege sight-singing (Do, Re, Mi etc) which is an amazing tool for ear training as well as voice training.

"I worked with Michelle for a little over 2 years. As an adult student, I was super nervous about singing in front of anyone - it took me this long to just sign up for lessons! She was patient with me and gave me lots of tools for dealing with my nerves and stage fright. Michelle helped me to choose songs that I not only wanted to sing but that matched my voice and range. I was hesitant about performing in a recital but Michelle pointed out that it was like training for a marathon - doing all the work but not performing just seemed silly. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely something I'm proud to have crossed off my bucket list."

"I am so excited about my voice lessons. I am a university trained classical singer with extensive operatic and art song experience who wanted to get back to singing after a long absence. I was looking for a teacher that could help me to navigate the changes in my voice due to the aging process and provide me with the tools to steady a vibrato that had gotten out of hand. Michelle and Robert are exactly what I needed. They have extensive and commanding knowledge of the voice and support mechanism and teach from the Italian “Bel Canto School” perspective. That is to say pure vowels, open throated but focused sound and a healthy, low laryngeal position. I am loving my voice again and it has only been 3 lessons. They are exceptional at finding the beauty in the individual voice and not requiring a “carbon copy” sound. One of the best things about my lessons is that they complement each other as teachers and find a number of ways to facilitate a natural and beautiful sound by articulating suggestions in many and varied ways. If the student is unable to reproduce the desired outcome by one method, they will find another way to achieve it. Not one minute of a lesson is wasted and each week brings quick and substantial progress. It has been a joy to work with them and I look forward to each lesson and the progress they bring. In short, I am thrilled."

"I have known Tamari Witkin for about four years through a very active music club called The Schubert Club of Fairfield County. She and I have performed vocal duets for the other members of the club on two occasions, and recently we were members of a quartet presenting music from a Bach Cantata. In addition, I have listened to her perform as a solo pianist on several occasions and was impressed with her musical ability.
Tamari is delightful to perform with, because her musicianship is highly professional, and she works well with other performers. In rehearsal, she is able to communicate her ideas about the inner structure of the music, giving her partners clear insights into the composer’s intent that helps them achieve a more satisfying performance.
I have been a voice teacher for over forty years, teaching both young and older students the craft of singing. My long years of experience have taught me that effective communication (from teacher to student) lies at that heart of developing an artist. Although I have not witnessed Tamari in a teaching capacity, I believe from the association I have had with her that she would be an effective and capable teacher."

"I took lessons with Rachel through the secondary lesson program at Oberlin College and it was a great experience! What I loved was that her teaching goals extended beyond how I sounded in the lesson itself, but also focused on trying to give me the tools for being able to properly and productively practice on my own. I also love her emphasis not just on proper technique and musicality, but also on expression."

"I highly, highly recommend Robert (and Michelle) to anybody. They are both incredible singers themselves and are very friendly, encouraging, and patient. They tailored each lesson for me to use what I knew, and develop areas that need polishing. Robert learned about my musical background, and took the time to understand the way I learn to make the most of the time. I was impressed by all the great reviews for both Robert and Michelle when I was searching for an instructor. I am happy to add my own to the list."
