I offer a relaxed atmosphere for serious learning and musical growth! I provide music from my own library, tailored to your experience level and vocal goals. Lessons are geared to improve vocal tone, music reading skills, and musical confidence.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The home studio offers wood floors and large windows for lots of light. The room is spacious with an upright piano. Seating for parents is available in the adjoining living room.
*Parking Note: I have a shared driveway, so please park under the plum tree in front of the house.

On Wednesdays, I teach at an alternate location, so please take note of that when scheduling!

I specialize in Operatic Voice, sight singing using solfege, and rhythm skills using the down-up system. I have been studying private voice at the university level since August of 2003 and participated in choirs from August 1999-present, learning sight singing and rhythm skills as well as choral vocal technique. I currently teach voice at the college level, with art song and folk song based repertoire.

Paige Patrick, a Great Teacher

Paige is another wonderful teacher. Chloe has been with 4 teachers with Take-Lessons in the last 3 and 1/2 years.. They change because they are all Opera students at UT, and as soon as they can, off they go to New York City! However, that has been a very good thing!!! Chloe has learned something wonderful from each of them that the last one didn't teach. She could take anyone available but so far she goes with the teacher her last teacher recommends. She tried out two from the list when Anna left for New Your City to join one of Chloe 's previous teachers, Dixie.
Chloe picked Paige and loves the comfort level she has with .her. Paige is very personable, easy to get along with, and a geat teacher. Chloe has just told me that the new technique Paige is teachng her has improved her voice in her school chior. Chloe is delighted with this, because she was at the point where practice was the main improver of her voice and now because of Paige she has a new technique.

I maintain very active performing and teaching careers. I have private voice studios on Long Island and in Manhattan and have taught singers and pianists in every genre of music for the last 27 years. I was on the faculty of New York University in the Music and Music Professions Department for 5 years. I was a coach in the Banff Centre's 'Voice through body and movement' workshop. Throughout my career as a vocal coach, I have worked with many cabaret artists as musical director, arranger and accompanist. Most notably, Debbie Boily's "Thank You for the Music"a one woman show with me at the piano, recorded live at Ovations in June 2004 Houston, Texas and subsequently performed in France, England and New York. Micheal is very passionate about his work . His passion comes across while teaching piano to me. I am an adult who decided to take up piano at a later age so it can be challenging but Michael encourages me to practice correctly and take my time to learn this new language of reading music so that I can move forward. Micheal makes it easy!

i haven't sung in 10 years, Michael gave me faith in myself and encouragement to get back into it which was great. Very personable lessons made it feel like it was catered to me and not a cookie cutter lesson, he knew what to focus on with me and how to work with me.

I've performed and taught in a wide variety of settings. My early professional experiences have included 3 years in the Army Band, several cruise line contracts, and freelance work as a performer and composer. Through these times, I've learned to excel in many styles. I recently graduated from NYU, where I was an adjunct faculty member. Here, I also performed and worked with a wonderful faculty including Kenny Werner, Brian Lynch, Chris Potter, Ralph Alessi, Tony Moreno, and trumpet guru Laurie Frink, who all inspire me as a musician and a teacher. Tom was AWESOME! I had a heck of a time finding someone who actually teaches Bugle. I have only had one lesson with Tom however, I am very excited to continue with him. Tom did not rush anything, he didnt watch the clock, he actually wanted to do more playing than talking about this form, music theory etc. etc. I had experienced with other Teachers. Everyone wants to start playing "something" as soon as possible and Tom dove right in to playing or trying to get me to play, HaHa in just the first 20min.

Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. He now offers online lessons via Skype as well as in his private studio. Playing credits include many museums and clubs in the NY area including Museum of Modern Art Museum of the City of NY and an extended stay at the Guggenheim museum in the Summer of 2000. Also he has been in the Brooklyn Museum concert series with his group Afinidades Bronx Libraries Brooklyn College and the Jewish Museum in trio and duo setting with great Percussionist Vanderlei Pereira. He has performed in Brazil as well most recently in the South
of Brazil,  receiving TV and radio coverage. He has also done workshops and performed at the Conservatory of the state of Pernambuco. In August 2004 he performed weekly at Rio Scenarium in Rio de Janeiro. His Band Brooklyn Brazil Bop has played at Joe's Pub as well as Central Park Festival. His band the Brazilian Acoustic ensemble performs periodically at 'Barbes' an important performance space in Brooklyn NY. In 2007 he gave a successful jazz workshop and concert in the city of Florianopolis Brazil. Billy has been awarded 3 prestigious composer's residencies 2006 - Yaddo and 2007 - The MacDowell Colony. He was featured on the PBS news hour during his residence at MacDowell. In 2008 he was awarded another MacDowell residency and followed this with a 3 hour appearance presenting his compositions live on WKCR Jazz Radio and another live radio appearance with band in 2010. Billy regularly plays in many venues around NY in Jazz trio settings as well as with Brazilian vocalists and instrumentalists. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Billy has completed two CD's of his original music and an EP of his original Choro music. He has a BFA in Jazz Performance from CCNY.

Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

Music, and teaching have always been a big passion in my life. The ability to take knowledge of a subject that you have, and show, share, and shape someone and pass on that knowledge to them. It is an amazing feeling. I am a passionate, and caring instructor. My teaching style is encouraging, motivating, and educational. I use a curriculum that was taught to me, and has been used in schools and universities. This curriculum fits all age groups and skill levels. Starting with Rock, moving to Funk, ending with Jazz.
When drumming playing with music, learning improvisation, and playing by ear is important. I also focus on this, having students learn their favorite songs, and learn to play with new music as well. This keeps students interested, and adds a fun personal element to their lessons. I also have implemented use of a teaching app, so while practicing if students have a question they can ask me right then so to not forget, and I can give feedback. Zaky is great with my son who has a history of brain injury which causes him to have short term memory problems. In just a few weeks he has much more confidence in himself and is even a slight bit ahead in band class. He is now able to help some of the other students which he loves. There are very few things that at school that don't overwhelm him, and Zaky has helped him find success in music.

I love working with my students. Watching them succeed at what they do is what makes my day great. I always love to have a fun atmosphere around me and enjoy every minute it. Music is great for self expression a great Escape or an easy pass-time. It's nothing that should be stressful, but the opposite and that is what my lessons aim to do. Provide an educational, but fun and expressive learning experience to carry with you or your child throughout your lives.

My son takes piano from Amber and I cannot say enough on how talented she is. She has so much patience and cares about her students. He responds well to her and is learning so quickly! She challenges him to continue to grow but does it in a way that is fun for a child his age. We think she is great!

My personal philosophy of music is to explore and learn as much from my students as I can teach them. For me teaching is like going on an adventure to find something together. I've been able to play all over the world and tour with many different musicians and the thing that made the core of every great performance was the human interaction and communication. For me music is about being more human. This is something I just as much try to impart and teach in my lessons as theory and technique.
