About Jackie
Hi! My name is Jackie, and I have 15+ years of experience in teaching, tutoring, and training. Currently, I am enjoying managing two small businesses while teaching students part time.

All of my students, meaning a perfect 100%, have improved their grades by at least one letter grade, if not more, and passed every one of their tests and exams. I help ALL my clients reach their goals!

A couple years ago, I returned to San Diego after living in Peru for several years where I taught English as a second language. My students ranged from adult business people and academicians to primary and secondary school students. I really needed to utilize different teaching methods depending on each student’s needs. Some students wanted more business-related conversation, so I had to be able to teach business principles in marketing, communication,
logistics, interviewing, and so much more. Critical thinking was an area that I pushed my business students to improve. Other students needed to work on the basics of grammar, reading, and writing, and we had a lot of fun in class, whether going through the interactive lesson or improvising by playing fun games to emphasize thinking on their feet in another language.

The feedback I often received from my Peruvian students, as well as my students in Mexico and the U.S., was that I made learning an enjoyable experience—they wanted to work harder to advance quickly in their classes. All of my students agree that I have a lot of patience and turn even the most challenging lessons into ones of positivity and encouragement. I provide critical feedback in the most constructive of ways that help the students reach conclusions on their own. I enjoy being there to support and guide their experience!

Before I left for Peru, I worked at St Vincent de Paul Village (part of Father Joe's Villages) in downtown San Diego. There I focused on Health Education. I built the Villages' first Health Education department and helped start its innovative Health & Wellness program. As part of these two programs, I taught homeless and low-income adults with and without learning disabilities, as well as children from preschoolers to high school students. Teaching such a wide variety of students how to improve their health while living in sometimes precarious situations without much income or stability pushed me to think creatively and come up with memorable ways to engage the students and help them apply what they had learned in their daily routine.

In high school, I took all AP and college prep classes. I went to a liberal arts college in Virginia where I focused on social studies and biology. I spent a few years training business people in Microsoft Office, Photoshop, InDesign, as well as presentation techniques. In grad school, I specialized in applied anthropology and public health. During that time, I tutored students in web design. In between, I've worked in Communications and Training in international health and development, so I have a lot of experience to bring to teaching.

Basically, I love teaching. I'm enthusiastic yet patient, and I absolutely adore helping kids and adults alike learn. It's such a sense of accomplishment when my students show off their terrific grades. I see the same look in my students’ eyes regardless of age—that pride that shines from within, that exuberant smile, like they can conquer anything. I want my students to keep that pride for a long, long time.

Right now, I'm writing two textbooks to be used in my Spanish classes. I've also written several academic articles published online. I love traveling, cats, and learning!

Sergey taught me about everything I had questions about and also offered suggestions in helping me to better determine the best way to find the career path that is right for me. Rather than hard and fast lessons, it was an opportunity to spend time, one on one, with a professional and learn from his experiences what works and what doesn't.

About MICHAEL
I have been teaching foreign languages for over 15 years including almost five years of teaching Arabic at the university level. I have been a small group instructor and private tutor as well to help students of Arabic, French, Farsi, and Turkish. Although these languages are very different, learning each one has made me better at the others as I develop nuances for the vocabulary, grammar and other lexical features of the languages. I have also lived abroad for almost seven years affording me the opportunity to understand the cultures of the peoples and to gain proficiency akin to a native speaker.

I love learning new languages myself and sharing them with others. This has fueled my drive to learn new languages as well as teach. I have learned various languages through traditional classroom studying, private tutoring, and self instructi
on. The combination of these methods has helped me to learn the challenges that students face in learning foreign languages and the techniques that work to make you successful.

I am a native English speaker and have acquired near native proficiency in Arabic by living in the Arabic speaking world for almost 7 years and teaching the language for over 15 years. My study of Arabic and Middle Eastern History led me to pursue additional studies in French, Farsi, and Turkish so that I could conduct more in depth research in these languages and also to assist me as I traveled through the region. Each language helps to unlock some of the more difficult aspects of the other language and helps to explain the similarities and differences of the languages and provides me with a unique set of tools to explain the "how?" and "why?" questions that generates from students' natural curiosity.

To teach your own native language, in my case English, it is immensely helpful to learn another foreign language. As I struggled to learn to speak others' languages, it helped me greatly to better understand my own. I enjoy using this advantage to help English as a Second Language students understand the intricacies of the language wile quickly grasping the most fundamental aspects required to communicate effectively in English.

Mandarin is my native. I earned my PhD in the US from City University of New York, hence have full professional proficiency in English.

I now work in higher education, a business school faculty of a local university. That qualification speaks to itself. My business students rate my classes 4.5/5. I take great pride in influencing my students positively. Some of my undergrads decided to become a Finance/Economics major after taking my courses in Financial Economics. They were in general business majors, unsure what particular business directions to pursue before taking my courses.

Tutoring my mother tongue is purely some fun outside of my regular higher education job. You can expect high standard tutoring since good quality instruction is my day to day job skill as a professor. My superior pedagogical skills are evidenced by formal
students evaluations of my university.

As a full-time faculty, I do not tutor for making extra money, but in return, I am looking to discuss and explore US-China cross-cultural topics. I have broad interests in social, economic and cultural subjects.

Preferably I can tutor you if you are in Albany or neighboring areas.

About Mariana
When I was growing up, we spoke English and Spanish at home.

I moved to Pennsylvania in 2010, and I started to teach Spanish in a close-by library to adults who were so engaged, that I felt motivated to create a more natural plan to help them remember the Spanish words with associations in English. In the same year, I started teaching Spanish at Lango to kids between two and six years old; I consistently used songs and puppets to reinforce my class success. I worked there for one year and two months before the Lango office moved to New York.
But my library group was growing larger.

I want to be part of my students footprint, I want them to see in knowledge the way to a good and productive life, but also to inspire in them the desire to teach others in any field where they apply their capacities.

I’m always available whenever a student
or parent needs talking to me, and I would like to team up with the formers to improve my students’ learning experience. Please feel free to reach to me at any time.

Interesting facts
I wrote for a Mexican national newspaper from 2005-2016.
In 2006 I won the poetry prize Rosario Muñoz.
I research the linguistic neural connections where language lives in our brain.

I thank you for stopping by.
I look forward to teaming up with you,

Mariana
