Banjo is very different from most other instruments, and requires a special technique. The most important thing to keep in mind is that you must project the melody, and everything else comes from that.

About Stephen

I have been playing music on the violin since the age of 7, composing since I was 14, and playing and performing on the guitar since I was 18. I've written a lot of music, and this past spring had works performed in Virginia and two in Manhattan. I have taught music for over 15 years, in college

I've played guitar since I was eight years old and various other stringed instruments for several years. I love the banjo sound and played a bit on my original album Heliotropism. I'd love to help novice players get their feet wet with the instrument, strumming and plucking away at their favorite songs.

About Gio

I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums. I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is wh

"I have wanted to play Banjo for years. Ive taken a few lessons here and there and something seemed to always get in the way. I never got very far at all other than wasting time. I started my lessons with Take Lessons 3 weeks ago. Being a novus I was kinda weary about how long it was going to take me to learn just a basic song and was nervous about being too slow and yada yada yada. I was nervous. When my 1st lesson started with Eric I felt very comfortable. There was no rush and he explained how to correct every mistake I made. (a bunch) and now by my 3rd lesson I can actually play a SONG!! Its slow mind you but its a song! Eric gives me tips on how to practice correctly and gives me assignments for the week which I love. I can practice on my own terms through the week and then come into my lesson, show what I have learned, get great lessons on how to improve and then pick up new material for the coming week. I love it!! Its lessons in my own home, no gas, no crowds and Eric is awesome. I plan on getting more and more lessons fo sho!! Thanks Eric!!"

"Best Banjo player!

I'm new to the banjo, having spent most of my life playing the guitar, acoustic, of course. I'd met Mike at a jam and was very impressed by his abilities. I was surprised to learn that we lived near each other, and I was in touch with him when I returned home. I started lessons with Mike and am now playing much better, due to his help. He's very patient, taking the time to show me not only how to play better, but also how to play with others in a "group" situation. I will continue to take lessons until
I'm as good as he is!"

"I found Lynn after attempting a few other places. Those folks were interested in helping me learn the banjo - to a point. They were nice enough but I knew I wanted to get further than they were willing to assist. When I met Lynn I quickly learned that she was ready and willing to help a new banjo student. She made it clear that she expected practice and that dedication was the key, and she makes it clear in our lessons, too. She is professional but has a sense of humor (and patience) that helps when things get frustrating (or when I am frustrating). I'm very glad I found her and I intend to learn a lot from her. Thank you, Lynn!"

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
