In lessons we'll train technique and theory right alongside the ear with the objective of being able to play from your authentic self.
In addition I studied with the Jazz legend and esteemed educator Stefon Harris (currently leading the Manhatttan School of Music). We will use his innovative theory and ear training techniques to learn the most basic mechanics of music.

About Grady

My personal philosophy of music is to explore and learn as much from my students as I can teach them. For me teaching is like going on an adventure to find something together. I've been able to play all over the world and tour with many different musicians and the thing that made the core of every g

Grady is a fantastic teacher. My 11-year-old son has been learning xylophone from Grady for a year and is still excited about his weekly lessons and loves it. Grady introduces my son to the joy and creativity of music.

Grady rocked it! Our grandson was immediately comfortable and Grady gentlly but firmly moved him along (including solfege) so he was beaming and playing Twinkle by the end of the lesson. The communication through (and by) TakeLessons is great, so we easily jumped on to the lesson.

David gets it. He understands what your needs are and designs personalized exercises in order to help you reach those goals! He challenges me. I want to know what things I am doing wrong and understand the mechanics behind my errors and the tactics in order to get better. David is good at expressing those things in order to help you understand your voice and the different factors that are affecting your voice. He is extremely capable and very flexible. For this reason, I definitely recommend him as an instructor for anyone that is searching for a good vocal instructor. Worth the $$.

I teach how to read rhythms and how to groove!

About Mike

I have taught private guitar, piano, bass and drum lessons since the late 70s in Salt Lake City, where I majored in jazz guitar performance, and since 1980 in Los Angeles. I make the lessons fun. Mike taught Leo in person before the pandemic started and has been doing online lessons with him for the past eight months. He is amazing with both. Leo has a very short attention span, but a deep love for music. Mike has been able to hold Leo’s attention every week for over a year — even during online lessons. Leo has become an awesome little pianist, and has developed a love for the piano. It has given him the ability to express all of his feelings and has helped his attention span for his schoolwork. Mike has so much patience, and always inquires about Leo’s favorite activities. He is great with kids and makes them feel so comfortable. Leo loves his “booming voice” and the free play blues music they get to play together every lesson.

Lessons with Al are always a high point of my week. Learning guitar as an adult is challenging, and he is unfailingly encouraging and motivational. His teaching method - a mix of music theory, exercises, improvisation, and practicing songs - keeps things fresh and challenging every week, and has helped me become better at productive practicing outside of each session. Al is also willing to jump down the rabbit hole with me when I bring him something I can’t figure out on my own. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He is a wonderful teacher.

Al is incredibly passionate about passing his expertise to the next generation. My son studied drum set with him for 3 years, and is now a jazz studies major in college. The enthusiasm and knowledge he will impart on your student is invaluable. Highly recommended!

Hello there!

My name is Toby Grace; I'm a percussionist and trained music teacher based in Los Angeles.
I received my Bachelor's at The Juilliard School, and currently I am pursuing my Master's at Colburn School. I specialize in teaching percussion (classical, drum set, or marching), but I have also tutored students in ear training, music theory, and jazz studies.
Beyond this, it is my passion to get to know my students and provide helpful guidance for THEIR journey. Each student is an individual, and my rounded musical education allows me to teach skills in all areas. Rather than providing a copy/paste curriculum to all my students, I will assign each student individual studies and exercises that will help them reach their short-term and long-term goals.

No need to worry about what you have or do not have; just log on, and we will make the most of it!
I look forward to hearing from you soon :)

About Toby

During my youth, my hometown of Austin, Texas was a perfect place for me to immerse myself in music. By the time I graduated high school, I had experience performing competitively both as a soloist as well as in wind ensembles, jazz bands, orchestras, and chamber ensembles. I also loved to sing and

"My 9-year-old son, Luke, who is on the spectrum (PDD-NOS) studied with David for the better part of a year and the experience was terrific. In addition to being extremely communicative and reliable, David was kind and patient. David kept Luke focused and entertained while also inviting him to think about rhythm in ways that made sense to Luke's brain. We happily traveled from Inwood to "Downtown Brooklyn" for lessons because the level of instruction was that good and, I think, Luke's progress demonstrates that. Luke was bitten by the hockey bug, so we are taking a break from percussion right now, but I wouldn't hesitate to return to David's studio should time allow in the future."
