I have played upright bass for over 20 years and am classically trained. My methods will help you achieve your goals, ranging anywhere from working on orchestral or jazz repertoire, solo pieces, and any other musical interest you would like to learn about. You can even learn how to sing while playing the upright bass! Students of mine have gone on to advance to audition-only groups.

My classes are very flexible when it comes to what the student wants. I can go from just teaching very basic bass playing to advanced harmonic concepts and jazz improvisation. On the first class, I give the student the choice of controlling our lessons materials about what they want to learn. Or the student can choose to let me control our classes, in which I will bring my own materials and ideas in which we should work and will go through the whole academic process of learning music.

With or without a bow, upright bass students that study with me can learn a variety of styles (classical, jazz, bluegrass, etc.). Lessons include focus on intonation, dexterity, and rhythmic independence with special attention to having a comfortable approach to the instrument. Students will always have tangible representations of their work through recordings and personalized musical guides.

My name is Joseph and I’ve been teaching professionally for 30 + years. Additionally, I’ve toured internationally with many artists and have several solo CDs as a leader. I currently play bass with Cirque Du Soleil in Las Vegas Nevada USA and I know what is required to be a professional musician. I have a customized teaching method for beginners through advanced players, however, I will also adopt things that you want to learn as well. I treat every student and lessons on an individual basis and I don’t have a cookie-cutter method of teaching. Lessons we will cover will be proper technique, solid foundation, rhythmic and groove training, learning notes/scales, learning songs, music theory, reading music, composition, ear training, recording techniques and much more.
