Music theory is the study of the practices and possibilities of music. It generally derives from observation of how musicians and composers make music, but includes hypothetical speculation. Most commonly, the term describes the academic study and analysis of fundamental elements of music such as pitch, rhythm, harmony, and form, but also refers to descriptions, concepts, or beliefs related to music. Because of the ever-expanding conception of what constitutes music (see Definition of music), a more inclusive definition could be that music theory is the consideration of any sonic phenomena, including silence, as it relates to music.

I can teach students with any level of skill in singing or playing an instrument how to read music, write down music notation, identify intervals and chords by ear, and understand the chord structure of music. My students in piano and singing receive instruction in music theory as part of their lessons, but I also teach theory-only lessons for students who sing or play any instrument.

I'm glad I found a teacher as patient, friendly and knowledgable as Laurel. I've been taking lessons with her for almost a year. She tailors the sessions to my spooky interests and encourages me to push my abilities.
When we began I had barely touched a piano in my life. Now I'm able to read sheet music, recognize relative pitches and play a list of my favorite songs with independent hand movement.
I'd recommend Laurel to anyone who wants to learn piano regardless of age or skill level.
I previously played the organ but had stopped for many years. She helped me get back into playing and provided new theory techniques that I had never learned previously.
I personally do prefer in-home lessons vs on-line. If there is a time in the future for in-home lessons to re-open I will definitely reach out Laurel to continue my lessons.

What Does it Mean to Change a Key? To change a song’s “key” means to shift the whole musical system to a higher or lower position. This process is called “transposition.” Performers often need transpose a song to better fit their voices. That way, a performer with a naturally lower singing voice (like myself) will be able to more comfortably sing a song that was originally written for someone with a naturally higher voice. Or vice versa. For singers, transposition feels fairly …
