My name is Josh Marcus. I'm a clarinet teacher and also teach flute, saxophone, and piano as well as jazz improvisation and other instruments such as bass and drums. I've been playing for about 25 years now! I'm well versed in any style you can imagine including jazz, classical, funk, blues, or anything else you can think of! I can also teach you how to improvise and play solos over chord changes or quickly come up with parts on the fly if you're playing in a band or are interested in writing. I learned clarinet as a saxophonist, so I feel like I have a great grasp on the experience someone has just starting out learning to play. I have some exercises and routines that can help to get you comfortable on the instrument and enjoying playing pretty quickly. I love playing flute and I would love to help you enjoy playing more too!
You can check out some examples of my playing at joshmarcusmusic.com, or feel free to message me for playing examples or with any questions you have. Even if ...
About Joshua
I have been playing music since I was a kid. I started out in church, then went on to play in school band and started gigging here and there. I just loved playing from the beginning and wanted to learn how to play improvised solos. There was just some magic in being able to make up what you play on

Although I am primarily a saxophonist, clarinet is a secondary instrument that most saxophonists also have to know how to play. As a performer it is an absolute necessity that I be able to double on the clarinet and be just as proficient.
My goal as a teacher is to provide an in depth understanding of the instrument to my students. Whether we are learning technique specific to the instrument or general musical concepts, it is important to me that I take the time to insure that my students not only learn how to do something, but also the reasons why we are learning a specific concept or technique. At the end of the day, my ultimate goal is to teach you how to teach yourself, so that you may enjoy playing the instrument outside of our lessons together.
I prefer not to conform to a specific teaching style, because every student is different, and I have been fortunate to have a great variety of types of students throughout my years as a teacher. Some of my students are ...

Clarinet:
A musical instrument family belonging to the group known as the woodwind instruments. It has a single-reed mouthpiece, a straight cylindrical tube with an almost cylindrical bore, and a flared bell. A person who plays a clarinet is called a clarinetist. It is a great instrument for orchestras, jazz, blues or even popular music.
Starting with the basics we will learn breathing and fingering techniques and how to read music. It won't be long before you are playing songs. As the student progresses theory and soloing will be taught if interested.

In addition, Bill was enormously helpful when it came to selecting the right equipment. He was accessible, knowledgeable, and even perused some available clarinets to help me find the ideal instrument for my goals and skill level.
I could not recommend Bill highly enough. He will tailor your instruction to your skill level, will be supportive and encouraging, and will give you both the tools and the motivation to reach your highest potential."

I was given techniques to better prepare exercises and studies. Davis will suggest tools to improve playing: method books, reading, videos and work sheets.
I always start my lessons with a series of questions I have prepared for him and he has so many comments on all of my questions.
Having a world-class teaching like David Blumberg is gold to me. I am past 68 now and I have never had so much fun working with my clarinet."
