Beginners typically take 60 minute classes once per week at a recurring time. Young children typically take half hour classes and older children, adult musicians and those on a budget typically take 45 minute classes. The most common lesson length to start with is 60 minutes, as the teacher will need to tune your instrument and help you get set up. Some students choose to take lessons twice per week when a concert is coming up, to catch up from a vacation or if they just want to make faster progress.

In class, you will learn new techniques, receive guidance on how to achieve the best sound possible and learn songs that you like and that interest you. You are expected to take this guidance and practice it thoroughly at home until you feel comfortable with it, so that when you are in class next, the teacher can move on to a new concept or skill which builds upon the skill practiced at home. They will only move you forward once you can do the more basic technique.

About Antoinette
Finding an schooled violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn and play, but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

PATIENCE
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

FRIENDLINESS
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

WHAT I EXPECT FROM MY STUDENTS
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
And a winning attitude.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

RENTALS
I rent out violins of all sizes.
I sell the book that I teach out of (or you can obtain it online or from Sam Ash).

If you have any questions, I am happy to answer them. You can use the contact button on this website and I will gladly answer you in return.

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

My primary expertise is in teaching beginners to low intermediate students but I gladly accept students of any level.

About Peter
Classically trained, energetic, experienced and creative music teacher with a proven ability to get the very best out of pupils; experienced in identifying the appropriate resources necessary for a subject matter and ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively. Most of my students read and play simple music after 2-3 classes of active instruction.

I also specialize in special needs students.

All my musical knowledge and expertise was attained in Eastern Europe with an extensive music pedagogy training. I play and teach piano, upright bass, bass guitar and a range of other instruments. Over the years I taught basic piano, the beginner violin, viola, cello and a variety of school instruments such as recorder and xylophone. I also teach advanced music theory, harmony and basics of composition and orchestral arranging req
uired for music colleges. I especially find it rewarding working with beginners and the opportunity to show them the amazing world of listening, playing and making music.

The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and classic repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European master teachers and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic theory, scales and chords up to melody and harmony development.

*** Lesson Details ***
The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. Curriculum and lesson plans are based on student's abilities and aspirations with appropriate balance between theoretical and practical work. The lesson material is always carefully chosen, and when necessary, adapted to specific learning needs.

With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. From basic piano and stringed instruments, to advanced theory, harmony, composition and improvisation to jazz, pop and rock.

Classes are not based on a single source or book. I provide other exercises in printed form for students to keep and take home.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Extensive e-library and ability to print any required material on the spot. Instant access to many on-line sheet music resources. Two high end digital keyboards, two violins, viola, cello, upright bass, bass guitar and amplifier, music stands, stereo equipment with a large CD collection of just any conceivable music style.. Assorted school instruments: recorder (soprano and tenor), xylophone. Various music charts and a large library of music resources and other books;

*** Travel Equipment ***

Peter has exceeded my expectations, I look forward for my lesson every week. I honestly can say He is the best teacher I’ve ever had. I am a 44 yo violin beginner student who has had 5 teachers in the last 6 years, I didn’t learn much with them, this been said, with Peter in just 3 months I feel I have learned more than my other teachers. Peter is so, so patient and extremely professional. I am very pleased to have found such a wonderful teacher.

Peter has been teaching bass to our son for several years and our son has become quite proficient. It's a bonus that Peter is unfailingly upbeat, professional, and a pleasure to have around. He truly loves music and conveys his appreciation to his students - so much so that now my husband is taking cello lessons from Peter, too.

My 13 yr old daughter started taking lessons with Christine in August of this year and we have been very happy with Christine so far. Her schedule is flexible and she works with us to accommodate my daughter's schedule. Things do come up and Christine is flexible to work around it. Also, my daughter has made tremendous improvement and it shows. My daughter was hand picked couple of weeks ago to represent our city middle school in OMEA performance. Pleased to have Christine as my daughter's teacher.

Congratulations on taking the next step to mastering your instrument and truly becoming an artist. Playing music has benefits for every aspect of life: creativity, technique, focus, and fun are encouraged as we learn how to become better musicians.

I am currently accepting students in my UWS Studio, offering private lessons for all ages and abilities in viola and violin.

About Mattie
"Mattie is the best viola teacher in the world" says my six year old son. I also am a student and really appreciate taking lessons with Mattie. She is thorough and focussed and pays close attention to each student. I like her whole body approach to teaching proper form and am unlearning and learning a lot. - Rachel, adult viola student

-

I am a passionate arts advocate and teacher, and am here to help you bring your musical goals to life! I am a conservatory trained violist, with over a decade of teaching experience. My true love is classical chamber music, but I also have toured internationally with indie rock bands. I specialize in Dalcroze Eurhythmics, a method for teaching rhythmic movement as well as physical and instrumental improvisation.

My expectation of the student is that they are enthusiastic about their lessons and
willing to put in the demanding work that is necessary to fine tune their artistry. Together we will decide on pieces and goals according to your technical abilities and musical interests. For younger students, parents will have a role in the success of their child’s music education. Performing opportunities will be available since it is my philosophy that music is a gift that should be shared.

Every student is different; therefore there is no one method or strategy that will work universally. I create tailored lesson plans for each student taking into account age, experience, personality and learning style. Lessons can include ear training, music history, harmony, sight reading and improvisation depending on the level and goal of the student. When working with young children, I typically use games and activities and follow Mimi Zweig’s principle of violin teaching, which is based on natural physical motions nurtured in a non-judgmental environment. This pedagogy uses the Suzuki repertoire but can also be used with other books. The Suzuki method is one of the most popular in the US. This method establishes strong musical and technical fundamentals. Other methods lead to similar results and can be just as enjoyable and interesting.
For older children and adults, I choose appropriate repertoire based on their musical interests, while still focusing on technique. Typically ...

About Lidia
I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, and started playing the viola at the age of 5. When I was 19 I moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where I attained a Bachelor of Music with Honours. Following my Bachelors degree, I completed a Master of Performance at the Royal College of Music and was awarded this in 2014.

I started teaching privately in 2010 and help students of all ages prepare for their exams (grades 1 to 8), auditions and other performances. I create tailored lesson plans for each student and teach both the performance and theory aspects in preparation for the exams. Most of my students are long-term students and have been learning with me for 3-4 years, with some up to 6 years. I take great pride in their success and my students have had a 100% success rate in the ABRSM exams.

In addition t
o teaching privately, I have also taught in various primary schools in the London Borough of Newham, teaching violin to students in years 5 and 6 (4th and 5th Grade) to take steps 1, 2 and grade 1 in the ECAM programme with the London College of Music and the University of West London. This involved designing lessons to ensure students were ready to take the final exams by end of term and varying teaching methods to ensure all learning styles were accommodated.

I have performed in New York City, London and France (including at the Merkin Concert Hall, LaMama Theatre, BBC Proms, the Barbican Centre and the Palace of Versailles) I was also invited to take part in the Philharmonia Orchestra ‘Infernal Dance’ chamber music series and was finalist in the Max and Peggy Morgan Competition run by the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

Other courses and qualifications that I have completed include: ‘Teaching the Violin and Viola: Creating a healthy foundation’ at Northwestern University, a Level 3 Teaching Assistant certification and a Child Protection Awareness programme.

Lidia is an amazing teacher, genuinely wants to help you learn the violin. She taught my daughter (now 10 years old) for 4 years, enabling her to do well in all her ABRSM tests (from Grade 1 to Grade 4). Full of insight, patience, ideas, compassion and inspiration. Sadly she had to stop teaching my daughter recently as she had to leave London to go to New York. I would recommend her to anyone.

Viola jokes are for losers... I think viola has one of the most gorgeous tone in the entire orchestra family. I can work on solo pieces as well as chamber music / orchestral excerpts of your choice.

About Keiko
I served as a violinist of the Attacca Quartet, a NY-based string quartet that performs all over the world from 2005 to 2019. In addition to concertizing, I teach students of all levels wherever I go; I have given lessons, masterclasses and lectures in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Ireland, Australia, Japan, UAE... good thing we all speak the universal language of humanity: music.

I grew up in Yokohama, Japan, but I decided that I was ready to explore the world when I was finishing up the 10th grade. I moved to New York to pursue a musical life and career. I have Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, as well as Artist Diploma in String Quartet Studies from The Juilliard School.

I have been teaching students of all ages since 2005. Many of them were young children who simply enjoy playing the vio
lin, but I have had several students win domestic and international competitions. I am also very fond of working with adults with or without experience- I usually end up being great friends with them.

I often encourage my students to work on a solo repertoire of an appropriate level, as well as an ensemble piece that would help them develop their musicianship. I am very friendly and casual, but if you ask me to, I can be very tough (I was raised by a tiger mom.)

If you are a beginner and need help with reading music in general, don't worry- I teach a course called "Ear Training" at Juilliard, so that can be a part of our lessons as well.

I look forward to meeting you and making music together!

Having shared the stage with some of today's leading figures in classical music, I have experience performing at the highest level and have had the opportunity to learn the foundations and subtleties of excellence in string playing and classical music in general from the greats. I began studying violin at the age of 4, raised by musician parents.
Lessons will usually center around a different focus point each time, depending on the individual's needs in general and that week. Most importantly, I never lose sight of the purpose of music-making (joy and expression!) throughout the lesson, even when getting into the nitty-gritty of technical proficiency.

About Georgina
I'm a Chilean-American, Juilliard trained musician equally comfortable teaching in Spanish or English, violin or viola. While I specialize in viola (my real passion!), I played violin for most of my life and love teaching violin to newbies and more advanced students alike. (It's pretty rare to start off on viola, and the technique between the two instruments has lots in common).
I have a super busy performing career as a chamber musician, soloist, and orchestral musician, but always make sure to be consistently there for my students regardless. Please read my bio below for more details.

Chilean-American violist Georgina Rossi performs throughout South America and the United States; most recently she had debuts with the Orquesta Sinfónica Uncuyo in Mendoza, under the baton of Giovanni Guzzo, and with the Orquesta de Cámara de Chile, alo
ngside music director Alejandra Urrutia.
Her pursuit of projects with a focus on modern and contemporary music has led her to collaborate with chamber ensembles like New Juilliard, AXIOM, and So Percussion, and alongside musicians such as Joel Sachs, Robert Langevin, and Daniel Barenboim. Passionate about Chilean music, Ms. Rossi gave the European premiere of composer Rafael Díaz’s piece for amplified solo viola during the 2018 International Viola Congress, a piece she had debuted in the U.S. at the Latin American Focus! Festival in New York.
A 2018 Fellow of the Bowdoin International Music Festival, where she was principal viola of the festival orchestra, Ms. Rossi has also been a part of the Sarasota, Orford, BANFF, and Kammermusik Akademie Stuttgart summer programs.
Ms. Rossi is a member of the Hartford Symphony. She holds a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Roger Tapping and was recipient of the Juilliard Scholarship, and received her Bachelor's from the Manhattan School of Music, where she studied with Karen Dreyfus and Daniel Avshalomov and was honored on the Dean’s List and with the Irene Diamond Scholarship.
Raised by clarinet-maker and soloist Luis Rossi and violist Penelope Knuth, Georgina began her viola studies with her mother before moving to the United States at sixteen on a national arts grant. After graduating from Interlochen Arts Academy in 2011, she moved to New York City to pursue music at the college level.
Ms. Rossi plays an Argentinian viola by Leonardo Anderi, made in 2014.
