What is my background?
I am an experienced performing artist and teacher that works in New York and regionally. I have developed a keen ability to assess and shape talent from years of training, teaching, performing, and working with the head of Arts programs to conduct admissions interviews, student evaluations, and performances. I attended Barnard College, Columbia University, and Maggie Flanigan's acting conservatory program. My training at Columbia University and privately with notable musicians focused on classical repertoire and theory, but I also work with students on popular music (i.e. Pop, R&B, Electronica, and Folk).

What material is covered during lessons?
Music theory (i.e. sight reading, chord progressions) as well as posture,
artistic expression, interpretation, breathing, and finger and pitch placement techniques are incorporated into my music instruction. Cold reading, audition preparation and technique, Shakespeare, scene analysis, and business strategies are examples of topics that may be covered in acting instruction. Linklater (voice), Alexander, Williamson (movement), and Art of Practicing (piano) methods are also employed.

What are the profiles of my students?
My students come from different walks of life: children coming from school who bound excitedly to my lesson door; teenage artists who have the passion and vision but lack the technique; working adults who seek reprieve from the stress of work by singing/ learning an instrument that they've always wanted to play; and seniors who want a fun hobby to keep active. I enjoy teaching them and watching them master the fundamentals while developing their own performance style (or even composing their own music)!

What is my teaching style?
Based on feedback, students appreciate that I am a teacher with a warm personality whose supportive, passionate, and fun approach and effective techniques help them attain the following: 1) a firm understanding of the fundamentals of music theory or acting technique; 2) an ability to effectively learn how to perform and practice singing/playing/acting a piece; and 3) a style of performing that minimizes tension, produces beautiful sound or a dynamic character, and/or allows them to fully express themselves. After a few months, students should have sound knowledge of all three.

My students and I connect, in part, because I remember being like them. On stage, I started out dancing and acting; I delved into singing and songwriting and then fell in love with playing the piano. The day that I learned how to merge those passions (i.e. singing while playing the piano) was one of the happiest days of my life! Now, whether I'm performing Shakespeare on stage, playing Chopin and Beethoven, or singing while playing tunes by Whitney Houston, I still get excited. Hopefully, I fuel that excitement in you, too!

What is the lesson structure?
Due to the comprehensive nature of my teaching style and structure, students above the age of 6 take lessons for 60 minutes; 30-minute lessons are only available for children aged 5-6. If a student wants to learn how to play while singing, I am happy to help him/her do so!

My studio location in Manhattan is conveniently near Midtown, Chelsea, Flat Iron, Murray Hill, Union Square, Tribeca, and the Financial District in particular and is easily accessible via public transportation. It houses an upright piano and seating for parents.

Nikole, is very warm and professional. I have never continued with voice lessons, I enjoyed the experience so much that I'm going to kick the bad habit of smoking and sit down and seriously figure my finances out to continue being taught by her. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

Kyla really knows what she's doing. I regularly go to her for performance help and never fails to provide constructive criticism and great suggestions for character development and script analysis. I've only had two sessions and I already have a better sense of control over my voice and all the anatomy associated with singing. Rebecca has a non judgemental demeanor which helps students, especially beginners such as myself to feel more comfortable and relaxed. She is knowledgeable and I was impressed with the way she assessed my range, and analyzed my voice in the initial session then set realistic goals to improve my control and the quality of my voice.

I have tutored dozens of students in the SAT and ACT and have helped them all increase their scores with most increasing their SAT score at least 100 points and some by over 400 points and on the ACT most by over 8 points and some by over 15 points. These are very difficult tests designed to be difficult to improve on. All of my students who gave themselves plenty of time to prepare and followed through on their promise to work on their own have seen significant score improvements.I have also worked with numerous students on developing study skills; helping them find the fun in school as well as helping with their organization skills and approach to homework.

As a high school student and later on as an undergraduate student, I faced difficulties with some of my math courses and higher level chemistry courses. The main obstacle to my success in these courses was having teachers who did a poor job of explaining challenging topics. Frustrated and disappointed in my shortcomings, I retook Algebra I in high school and Organic Chemistry I, in college. Repeating these courses with new instructors allowed me a fresh opportunity to learn and master many of the challenging topics I had faced. Due to my hard work and commitment to excellence, I earned 100 in Algebra I, and A+ in Organic Chemistry I.

Among other life lessons, facing these two challenges showed me the power of good instructors, and more importantly, how to approach difficult topics. The best technique to understanding new concept
s is to start with an easy related topic. For example if I ask you what is the atomic radius of periods in the periodic table? To understand the answer, you would need to know the electron affinities of metals and nonmetals. Knowing how metals and nonmetals behave, will allow you to understand electron affinities. In addition, understanding the octet rule and the desired electron state of each atom is essential to answering the question. Lastly, answering the question without understanding why nonmetals radius is smaller than metals is meaningless.

My goal for each tutoring session is to get my student to change the way they approach answering science based questions. While the alternative approach of memorization might be helpful in humanities, it would be fruitless in science or math courses. Once you understand the “why” behind the answer, the next task is to practice working on a variety of questions. To efficiently maximize our time together, I come prepared with worksheets on any challenging topic. At the end of each session, I ask my students what topics they would like me to cover the next session. If applicable, I incorporate relevant regent’s questions.

Kahtan helped my son earn 94 on NYS chemistry regents exam. Prior to working with kahtan, my son was getting 80s on his class exams. Kahtan was always on time and never missed an appointment. I was so pleased with kahtan that I recently reached out to kahtan to inquire about SAT tutoring for my son. Unfortunately, kahtan wanted to focus on tutoring chemistry and did not think he was the right candidate for the job.
