I'm a 'classically trained' voice teacher with extensive training in dance and drama;
a liberal arts degree from Columbia University/Master of Arts Education from City College of NY.
Before settling into a music career, worked as a dance instructor, for the City of NY and received congrats from John Lindsey, then mayor, for outstanding achievement.
As an actor, performed in several off-Broadway plays and was a principal in the “Broadway tour”, ”Pulitzer prize ” winning play, “No Place to be Somebody.” I've performed through the years as a vocalist with a trio and as a ONE WOMAN SHOW at various night spots, concert halls and social events. As a voice coach I've had the good fortune to teach the skills and techniques of the art of singing.
Singing is the joy I share as a performer and as a teacher. Anyone can learn to sing; and do it on a superior level. It takes desire and the willingness to practice the skills necessary until the goal is achieved.
The journey is worth it!

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn 5 Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
1. Pitch
2. Rhythm
3. Breath
4. Voice
5. Diction
Pitch
Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA
*Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous. Copies of previous lessons/homework assignments to be distributed at each meeting

I have been teaching voice for 8 years, and love to help students of all skill levels and ages to discover the strength and beauty of their own voices. I understand that singing in front of another person can be both deeply satisfying and deeply scary, and make it a priority to help all of my students feel safe and accepted. My method takes concepts from bel canto technique, alexander technique, and techniques I’ve developed myself over years of singing professionally in a wide range of styles and contexts, and I like to work on a mix of whatever songs my student loves and repertoire I know will strengthen their vocal skills and musical understanding.

I am a professional composer and I teach music theory and composition at the Juilliard School. I've worked (and continue to work) with Charlotte Mundy on vocal projects first and foremost because I adore her stunning sound and her incredible range of style and expression. But it’s an amazing bonus that she is also so great to work with. Charlotte is insightful, constructive, flexible, positive, articulate about her ideas, and dedicated to excellent results, yet easygoing and friendly. She has a keen artistic sense, solid professionality, and is always a pleasure to work with. These are qualities I know she brings to her teaching.

I started singing lessons with Charlotte as a complete novice with no musical background and feel like I lucked out finding her. She's an excellent, patient teacher that lets you go in directions you want and makes other paths seem accessible. A lot of our classes would be me playing a song I liked, envying Charlotte as she instantly deciphered the notes, and then learning it back in key. It was super fun.

She is a teacher first and foremost and doesn't sing during lessons, but on occasion when I didn't understand an exercise or progression and asked her to sing it- my god. She has a voice that makes the air in the room change.

Highly recommended.

I have had the pleasure of working with Charlotte for the past few years; the combination of her ability to communicate musicality and her assiduous study of scores, texts, and other important materials make both her teaching and performing compelling at the highest level.
Charlotte's ability to teach multiple vocal styles is an incredible resource.
Her instruction comes from a place of deep knowledge and also deep kindness, I would absolutely recommend studying with Charlotte.

I have been performing on stage since I was a child, training in classical voice, piano and acting. I've studied with great teachers and performers in many disciplines, showing that everyone can improve, sometimes revealing great potential. Professionally, I've worked in plays, musicals and recently completed my masters in Vocal Performance.  I'm currently in rehearsal for the Opera Slavica production of Iolanthe, and will be performing in the tour of Elf the Musical from November to January.

A good voice lesson should be fun and invigorating. Although its important to speak about ideas, singing is physical and we only learn by doing. I love working on any repertoire, and won't shy away from songs that inspire my students. My lesson format is pretty free-form. It is based on the individual student mixing w

Kevin will help you unlock the potential in your voice and get you to a place of confidence while singing

I can't recommend Kevin enough, especially for someone like me, who's returning to voice lessons after many years. Kevin has debunked the prior myths I had about the voice and singing and I now feel confident to sing after a few warm ups and an hour of being awake and talking. Kevin has really simplified the singing process for me while also teaching me techniques that keep singing challenging and invigorating. My voice is the strongest, most authentic, and most consistent its ever been and I definitely owe that to training with Kevin.

A creative, patient, and talented teacher

I started singing when I first entered college, and I fell in love with it. My only problem was that I didn't have the experience or the knowledge on how to develop my voice. I have always wanted to be on stage singing and acting in musical theatre shows, but I didn't think I had the talent for it. Kevin helped to change this for me.

Kevin took me under his wing and right away my voice began to improve. I had a richer, deeper resonance and I started to be able to find control over my voice, my flexibility and range increased, and I started to find the carefree, easy singing voice that people strive towards.

Lessons with Kevin were always enjoyable. He is one of the most supportive people I know, and he has a way of making you feel good about yourself even if your voice is cracking or being uncooperative. I remember one time, I went to sing an F above the staff and my voice just broke completely and some really terrible sound came out. All Kevin said was, "There's that frog!" and we laughed it off and continued with the lesson.

One of the best aspects of Kevin's teaching is his ability to explain concepts clearly. He provides many different viewpoints for addressing issues with the voice and can clearly articulate solutions to your specific vocal needs.

In addition to being able to teach well, Kevin is also a very talented singer. He uses a lot of vocal models in his lessons (which only enhanced his ability to communicate concepts clearly), and I was always blown a way with how rich and resonant his voice was. I envied his ability to transition smoothly throughout all the ranges of the voice.

I know that I was not Kevin's easiest student to teach, but thanks to him I now have the confidence and the skill to get up in front of people and sing my heart out, and actually sound good! Last summer I landed the role of Rolf in our community theatre production of The Sound of Music. This would not have been possible without Kevin.

I learned more in 2 years than all of my years in singing

I started taking voice lessons with Kevin when I was a Junior in college. I had been seeing a voice teacher in NYC who had worked for years with many professional singers on Broadway. So, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started working with a grad student from the school of music (which mostly focuses on classical voice). I wanted to learn about classical voice but, I mostly wanted to continue working on musical theatre songs. So, I wasn't sure how much I could learn from a grad student who was young and learning about voice himself.

Kevin exceeded my expectations. On my first day with Kevin, I was nervous because all of my voice teachers in the past had been strict and would even occasionally yell at me. So, I could never fully be comfortable at a voice lesson because I had always been afraid to make mistakes. Kevin puts you at ease right away with his friendly and bubbly demeanor. He encourages you to give it your all and applauds mistakes and cracks because it means you are trying and getting to a new place in your voice that you're not used to. Kevin wanted to work on what I wanted to work on, however, he was also able to teach me things I had never been taught before with my old teacher like newer concepts and simply how to sing with a richer voice. Kevin was able to help me with all kinds of singing as he is trained in musical theatre, classical, and opera.

I knew I could also count on Kevin because of how honest he would be with me. He would tell me his honest thoughts about my work and any shows he came to see me in. I valued Kevin's opinion because he was ALWAYS straightforward with me.

Not only was Kevin a great teacher but, he was SO supportive of me. Kevin came to my rehearsals and performances to give me tips on how I could improve my performance and coached me on characterization singing. He even agreed to meet with me outside of our normal lessons if I ever needed help with an audition piece.

I could honestly go on and on about how wonderful Kevin was and I am so sad that I can no longer have him as my voice teacher due to distance. However, the things Kevin has taught me will always stay with me and I am sure I will use everything he has taught me for years to come.

I HIGHLY recommend Kevin R. as a voice teacher. No matter what kind of singer you want to be or how experienced or trained you are Kevin will meet your personal needs to help you reach your goals. He will challenge you, motivate you, and leave you feeling proud of what you accomplished. I learned more in the two years I worked with Kevin than I did in all of my years of singing. So if you are looking for a high quality, honest, and supportive voice teacher Kevin R. is perfect for you!

Hey Guys (and girls lol). I'm Justin! I am a graduate from Five Towns College with a BA in Music Performance and soon i plan to move on to getting my Masters in Music Education at Lehman College in the Bronx. I'm a Vocal major with a minor in piano. I've been studying music for the past 9 years. Someday my dream is to be a Private Instructor in Atlanta, GA and on the side I dream of singing Jazz in cabarets, cafe's etc. As a singer, I've been trained both classically with a lot of background in theater and jazz, and as a pianist, classically, reading music and etc, although i have a background teaching jazz such as reading chords and etc.

I am an extremely dorky, funny and confident person. I love making my students feel comfortable and confident with what they want to accomplish. Its more than just regular lesson, but a chance to open
up and shine to be the musician you are!

Lastly, I am very flexible. I will try my best to make lessons that will not strain any schedule.

I'm a singer-songwriter with prior recording, performing, and theatre training and although I have trained with a number of different instructors, Mary brought something new and beneficial to the table! Prior to beginning our lesson we had a brief discussion about what I've done and what my goals are, and then proceeded to make a sort of action plan on how to address everything! Just after one 45 minute lesson, I had learned techniques that I hadn't ever used before and could already sense my improvement. She gave me great mental and physical cues that I found to be extremely helpful. She is clearly very knowledgeable about what she does and her performance experience gives her a special edge and understanding when it comes to her teaching style.

As far as logistics go, I have both driven and taken the subway to get to her house. She lives super close to the L train (maybe a 2 or 3 minute walk?) and there is usually adequate parking nearby. Her home is lovely and the backroom where the piano is has incredible acoustics. I could sing there for hours!! Her cute pup Waka is also a nice addition/perk to the overall environment :)

Overall, I'm incredibly happy and so excited to see how she helps me achieve my goals!!

I had my first voice lesson in a long time with Mary. I've had years of training in the past, and Mary was very informed and knowledgable about different styles and techniques. She was constantly checking in with me about my experiences and what challenges I face to work on exercises that were specifically suited to my voice and its needs. She also spent some extra time with me to look through my audition material and help me to focus it a bit. Her beautiful home and workspace lent itself to a relaxing and rewarding` lesson that only went by too quickly.

She also was encouraging and make me feel safe to sing (and good about the sound I was producing!) while still offering exercises and ways to improve what I was doing. She also went out of her way to find me songs when I mentioned that I needed some more rep for my book! Specializing in classical voice instruction, Ms. Nakatani has both a BM and an MM in Operatic Voice from some of New York City's top conservatories. Ms. Nakatani's voice lessons focus on a combination of proper breath support, healthy vocal technique, advanced music theory comprehension and artistic/dramatic instruction. Students of every level, wishing to begin or advance their understanding of music and the voice, are welcome. Ms. Nakatani is adept at tailoring lessons to suit her students' needs and takes great pride in seeing her students enjoy their musical experience!

About Lindsey
I am a professional opera singer and voice teacher, based in New York City. I received my Bachelor's of Music from The Juilliard School and my Master's of Music from Mannes The New School for Music. I have performed in theaters all over the U.S. Most recently I performed with the Princeton Festival in New Jersey where I covered the role of Marzelline in Beethoven's Fidelio.

My vocal instruction is centered around proper breath control and knowing how to use your body as an instrument. Students will learn how to release tension, focus their sound, support the core of their sound and sing with confidence. Learning healthy vocal technique is key to pursuing a long-lasting singing career. I also teach musical theory of varying levels, basic foreign language diction and dramatic interpretation to my students. While I specialize in classical
music, I also enjoy teaching musical theater as well. Good vocal technique can and should be applied to any kind of singing.

I teach lessons in my private studio or in clients' homes provided there is access to a piano. Please message me if you're interested in starting or advancing your singing education. I look forward to hearing your voice!
