While I do not formally teach drums anymore I do take on students from time to time who show a keen interest and dedication to drums and percussion as it pertains to songwriting and locking in with the bass player.
New 6 Month and One Year Courses Taught: 1. Radio Introduction Personality Broadcasting. 2. Guitar Studies Advanced 3. Music Industry 4. Advanced Composition 5. Sound Design 6. Abelton LIVE 7. Premix Setup and Post Production 8. PR and Promotions Business Background: I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and ru
nning quickly. I help students get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.
I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be. When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.
The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!
Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.
*** Lesson Details *** Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.
We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music. After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable. ----------------------------

I would definitely recommend him." ~ PJ Stover of PJ Stover Voices; Independent Film & Recording voice-over artist ----------------------------------- What James spouse says about working on songwriting with him:
"James is my husband for over 10 years now. Over the years, I have seen James give guidance and counsel to many hopeful musicians of all ages, and inspire others about how music influences and benefits our lives. I would highly recommend James to anyone who wants to learn guitar, voice, music theory, and acting. James is a great talent, and study with him would benefit anyone with the sincere desire to grow as an artist. When we married, I had fallen in love with James’ conversational style, and his vast knowledge of music. James Walsh has helped me in more ways than can I could even imagine in the past 6 months I have trained with him. His challenges and ideas lit a creative spark in my mind, helping me express myself through playing the role of a character nicely (absolutely loving the accent practice i am being taught in). He has also provided a very therapeutic healing for my mental health, helping me to be more spontaneous and witty, instead of the wooden and mechanical person I once was.
James has a ridiculous amount of connections, resources and ideas at his hands, and gladly offers him to me to help me in my Method Acting. For those looking for a career in Acting, Comedy, or Film, James is definitely your man for opening several doors.
Throughout the months, he has been very supportive and encouraging, oftentimes doing welfare checkups on me throughout the week and showing me new ideas and techniques in film, acting and spontaneity. He demonstrates patience with learning curves, and gives good assignments to work on through the week for the next time you meet up. He also is understanding if you cannot make an appointment.
In terms of the actual classes, they are phenomenal. Many classes, when deliberately practicing, feel more like an actual In-the-moment conversation rather than a mechanical " Do this than that" layout. He gives a lot of good and fair feedback for improvement at the end of the class, and following the advice never failed to be right. Be prepared for time to fly, though, as 45 minutes will feel like 10, especially if you are REALLY in character and going back and forth with him on random topics, which almost make you feel like you have a hidden persona lol.
All in all, James is very experienced and skilled in teaching students of all walks of life, from aspiring actors/actresses to would be filmmakers to people simply looking to learn life skills that are invaluable to life, career, relationships and even mental health! There is something for all in this coach's teachings, provided you are wiling to put in the work. Phenomenal teacher and an all around great person!

James is a very caring teacher who took the time to get to know my strengths and weaknesses. He has many years of experience in this field and it shows in his lessons.
Thank you James for the training, I grew as a improv student from the time I worked with you. I utilized this class as a test for my profession (business) and am grateful that I selected you as a mentor/teacher. I am happy with the results and may be knocking on your door again down the road. Stay tuned.
I can teach set playing as well as concert percussion, including classical snare, marimba, vibraphone, etc.
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all
*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.
Very pleasant teacher. First lesson went well. Thank you

Nathan is kind and encouraging. My son is enjoying the lessons and making progress towards playing tapas and reveille. He sounds good!! Online classes are convenient to add into a busy schedule.
May 24, 2019
This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.
Outside of teaching percussion and musical performances I have worked in special education for over 15 years.
My life of music started knee high at the age of 4 playing drums and piano. At the age of 15 I gave my first musical performance, from that stage on I knew my talent had found a home.
In the 11th grade I toured with a local funk group in Washington DC through 26 cities learning music and the life of travel at an early age. During my last high school and college years I performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and with local rap artist.
Recording credits and highlights include work with Def Jam artist Steady Eddy, recording go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock, and recordings with Little Benny and the Masters.
My other musical passion is teaching. Throughout my col
lege years and beyond I served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. As part of the Morgan State University Magnificent Marching Machine I served as a instructional leader in music and performance mentor for the team. I taught part time as a percussion instructor at Milford Mill High School giving individual lessons for over 10 years.
Musical inspiration is an important element to the refinement of my craft. A few personal musical influences are Buddy Rich, Max Roach, Neil Peart (Rush), Dennis Chambers, (Santana), George Gray (Roberta Flack), Ricky Wellman (Miles Davis), Quinton Mack-Davis (Rare Essence) and Michael Bland (Prince).
*** Lesson Details *** Within the first three months of lessons student will gain a strong foundation of sight reading and basic drum techniques in both rudiment studies and playing the drum set. My style of teaching music consist of breaking each skill down into chunks and allowing students to learn using their individual learning styles. I utilize rewards for perfect practice and each lesson contains a safe, fun learning atmosphere with students exhibiting in their best behavior.
*** Studio Equipment *** Lessons in store front studio, drum kit provided
*** Travel Equipment *** I will bring a practice pad. Students should have a drum set.
*** Specialties *** Jazz, Funk, pop, and classical.
My son’s first lesson went really well! Mr. Charles was really accommodating - as we were running late and he patiently waited and completed our full first session. My son is already looking to his next lesson.

Our son has never played in a marching band before but is interested in playing in the marching band when he attends college in July so we were specifically looking for an instructor who had marching band experience to teach our son since he's never participated in the marching band in high school. We saw Mr. Stewart's profile and decided to have him work with our son. That was the BEST decision that we could have ever made. We have been nothing but impressed with Mr. Stewart. He definitely has the gift of teaching and he is very patient, knowledgeable, and he challenges our son to get better by giving him homework after each session. Our son absolutely LOVES Mr. Stewart and he is always excited for each lesson and to practice what Mr. Stewart has taught him. Our son went from not playing in the marching band at all in high school to making his college band and receiving a scholarship all thanks to Mr. Stewart. We are very grateful for his outstanding teaching and we would definitely recommend Mr. Stewart 100%.
I pretty much teach all common areas of percussion. These include timpani, drum set, marching percussion, mallet percussion, concert percussion, and some world percussion.
Alex was born May 31, 1987. Since both of his parents were band directors, he grew up in a very musically inclined family. When he was 15 years old, during his freshman year of high school, he started studying percussion. A year later he began studying under Chad Kohler and continued to do so until 2009. During spring semester of 2009 he studied briefly under Richard Walker at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). In the fall of that year he then transferred to Butler University for an academic year and studied under Craig Hetrick and Jon Crabiel.
Beginning in 2011 Alex began studying attending University of Indianapolis and is currently studying under Paul Berns as well as Art Reiner. In addition to studying with them he has also went back to continue to study with his mentor Chad Kohler. In the time since Alex gr
aduated high school, he has been continuously presented with teaching opportunities. At the time, though, music was not looking like the best course of action for him. With the aid of Chad Kohler, Alex then began getting more involved with teaching percussion. Alex eventually went on to arranging his own parts for his students, as well as composing original percussion ensemble pieces. Alex is currently pursuing his Master's Degree in Music Technology at IUPUI.
In the time since he has been out of high school, he has taught at a number of schools including the Lynhurst 7th & 8th Grade Center, North Putnam Jr./Sr. High School, Broad Ripple Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities, and Lawrence Central. He has also taught at Arlington High School and Short Ridge High School.
When it comes to teaching music, what is known to be as the “Holy Trinity” comes to mind. While teaching I personally believe that it is important to challenge students just enough so that they are not discouraged and are still able to have fun.
The Holy Trinity plays a big role in this. What it consists of is embracing your students from all angles. This would be from ensembles and private lessons, which in turn then encourage them to practice. Ensemble, private lessons, and practicing are the three main categories that make up the “Holy Trinity.” And in using this, you can also be more involved with your students as well. It is always a good idea be friend your students as well and not just be the “teacher.” There is a great quote that goes like this, “They will never care about how much you know, until they know how much you care.” In which case has been proven to be very true time and time again.
It is important as a teacher to be able to inspire your students and to encourage them. Which is why I think it is important to be a good friend as well to your students. This way a kind of trust is formed and in turn can easily lead to the success of a music program. Also I do believe that it is important to expose students to as many forms of music as possible. This way they are not just stuck in one kind of mind set and if they choose to go into music for their career, then they have many different experiences they can pull and relate from. Plus they will also have some more knowledge of different cultures and music genres that can help not only create better music but also be more overall worldly in their personal life out side of music. Being able to learn about music is very important, and can easily impact a student’s life in many different ways that most subjects just do not have the capability to. This is what I believe about learning music and why I also love to teach it. I want my students to be able to have all the same great experiences I have had and more. Which is why I personally believe so heavily in a good music education.
*** Lesson Details *** Although the approach to teaching that I use comes across as being pretty laid back, I do expect what some might consider to be a lot out of my students. This is because I want to make sure that my students will be successful as musicians.
While a student is studying with me; they will learn about percussion from multiple angles. They will learn and be able to understand many basic music theory terms and principles. They will also learn how each percussion instrument is tied to one another in technique and how to easily transition from instrument to instrument.
Depending on the age of the student, after about three months of studying with me, the student will know a few major scales, most of the standard American rudiments, and some basic drum set concepts. After 6 months, the student will know all 12 major scales, be familiar with all 40 snare drum rudiments, and know a good portion of basic drum set.
Please keep in mind that results may vary depending on the age of the student and the amount of practicing they do on their own. Results also depend upon whether or not they are practicing correctly, which is something they will also learn how to do with me.
*** Studio Equipment *** In-studio lessons in basement with acoustic drum set. Street parking or drive way. Seating available for parents.
Lessons at the High School will be in the band room with their equipment.
*** Specialties *** I mostly specialize in marching percussion as well as 2 and 4 mallet percussion.

Alex is Very knowledgeable. He was great with my 13-year-old daughter. She learns a lot from him and really enjoys working with him. He is very good teacher and very patient. I like the fact that he gives her specific homework to work on. I look forward to working with him for a long time.
In our percussion class we will cover music theory, counting rhythms and discover a variety of percussion. The majority of this lesson will revolve around the Cajon, Shaker, Tamborine, and using brushes and snare technique and will explore african drums as well!
Bring your hacky sack and get ready for the drum circle. This class is perfect for groups and couples. Feel free to use the "ask a question" feature if you have any questions about this class or it's outline!
I started my musical path in a Ballet Studio. I fell in love with the crackle of the vinyl record playing as I learned to listen and dance with the rhythm.
I started playing the guitar when I was in elementary and took classical lessons until I was a teenager.I really enjoy the art of practice and the journey of patience. The process of learning has helped me carve out and cultivate my style of music. It's opened up a lot of doors for me in my life. I've had the honor to play with a lot of great performers and have been lucky enough to tour the U.S. and Canada with festivals and showcases such as Vans Warped Tour, South By Southwest and the Halifax Pop Explosion.I've been the opening act for Carolyn Wonderland, Maria Taylor, Tsunami Bomb, Tilly and the Wall, Basia Bulat, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere. Anathallo, Cursive, Milton Hopki
ns, and Pony Up.
When I have free time I volunteer with the Houston Chapter of Girls Rock Camp to help teach girls empowerment through songwriting and music.
*** Lesson Details *** I began teaching as an afterschool job when I was 16. I was homeschooled, so I feel that the experience taught me that everyone learns differently and that there is not just one standardized method to playing music.
My teaching style varies with each student, but the one constant is my ability to make each and every client I encounter completely fall in LOVE with music. It's my super power.
Lesson plans are tailored for your specific needs and to help you achieve your musical goals and aspirations at your desired pace. I enjoy my students and making music with them.
Here is an overview of the lessons that I provide.

Hello! I'm Evan, and I love to play and teach percussion!
I studied percussion at The Juilliard School for my master's degree, University of Michigan for my bachelor's degree, and the Interlochen Arts Academy. I am Miami-based, and I regularly perform with New World Symphony, Nu Deco Ensemble, Conduit, and Miami City Ballet.
I enjoy working with students to help them reach their full potential in music, and in life. I use percussion as a vehicle to teach excellence, no matter what path the student ends up pursuing as a career.
I have performed around the world in Europe, Africa, and North America in venues such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, the deYoung Museum in San Francisco, and Carnegie Hall. I have shared the stage with Grammy Award-winning musicians including members of the ensemble
eighth blackbird, song-writer and organist Cory Henry, and vocalist Hila Plitmann. These experiences all inform my teaching style and the breadth of information I am able to share with my students.
Please let me know when you would like to set up a lesson and we can work together to reach your goals!
I have a Master's degree in percussion performance and have taught students ranging from absolute beginners to college age students.

"Tareq is an excellent teacher. He uses various methods and techniques to teach.
Looking forward to my next lesson with him!!!"
"This dude can play! Brian is a great teacher.. we did some hand drums and drum set for the few lessons we had together. I was new to learning music and g
lad I came across Brian because he is a chill guy with positive light. I felt as if I could take drums as far as I wanted with Brian as my teacher. I will be back for some more lessons when my wife lets me lol."
"Ben was very accommodating to my son's busy marching band schedule. My son had never taken lessons before, and he was nervous as to what to expect. By t
he second lesson, that was all just a thing in the past! Ben worked with my teenager to relax and really enjoy what he was playing. Even the teachers at school have noticed the improvement in my son's abilities after only a few lessons with Ben! If you need a lesson teacher, BOOK BEN!"
"When you are looking for a good music instructor, these are the things you have to consider. 1. Price, 2. Location, 3. Teacher's experiences (resume), a
nd 4. Characters of the instructor. The first three are easy to recognize from online information. The last one is hard to get, and yet , for us, the most important factor. Many instructors teach lessons only as a job (for money). They do things only during their "paid time." However, taking music lessons need more than that. A true music educator takes every opportunity to see the potentials of the student, knows how to coach individuals, and build up each student with encouragement and sometimes, discipline. He not only teach weekly lesson to help improved my son's skills, he also do extra to encourage students to go to concert, summer camp and perform at the nursing home. Every year, he arranged every details of a free concert with flyer, communications, equipment and even a professional cameraman! He did all those to encourage students to get out there to perform. We are forever grateful for his help for our son's college and scholarship applications. Mr. Rank is a "student oriented" teacher with a servant heart. If anybody is looking for an "all inclusive teacher, Mr. Rank is the best percussion teacher in DFW area. I can never thank enough for what he has done for my son. I hope my son will one day grow and become a teacher like Mr. Rank who care so much for his students."
"Steve D. is an excellent teacher! My daughter is in the band at her middle school, and she started taking lessons a few weeks before school started. She
was worried about having to play a part on the bells that she did not know. Steve showed her exactly how to play it, and she was able to play the whole piece before leaving her lesson. She came worried, and she left confident! Steve is very patient, and is able to answer any question you ask him regarding percussion. He is very kind as well, and I would recommend him to anyone who needs lessons."
"John is THE BEST. He is as knowledgeable as they come, inspires my daughter to become her best self, is communicative and flexible. Honestly, I am scared
he will become too popular — he's OURS! <3"
"Tareq is a great teacher. I have been taking lessons with him for the last three years. He comes to my place for an hour every week. I study with him Midd
le Eastern percussion Riq and Doumbek. He's always on time, prepared. Our lesson, sometimes go 15-20 minutes over time. He never charged me extra. I'm so happy to know I'm both as a person as a teacher."
"Absolutely fantastic teacher! I've had some lessons with Tareq. He is a great person and musician, he listens carefully and explains everything thoroughly
. He gave me great exercises that helped me improve my playing and sense of time and rhythm. It is a great experience to have lessons with him, and I think his attitude is what makes the difference. I highly recommend taking lessons with Tareq"
"Fantastic lesson!! Olises really broke down the strokes and took the time to make sure I understood the lesson's objectives. The lesson was at the perfe
