I was on the faculty of New York University in the Music and Music Professions Department for 5 years. I was a coach in the Banff Centre's 'Voice through body and movement' workshop. Throughout my career as a vocal coach, I have worked with many cabaret artists as musical director, arranger and accompanist. I endeavor to teach you a natural and easy vocal production; to teach you a good solid technique of singing and to help you develop confidence and a polished delivery as a singing artist on and off the stage.

Our work together is an intuitive journey of discovery. Your participation in giving feedback about what you are experiencing during our sessions together as well as what happens in your practice sessions and in your performances is an invaluable tool for us to discover and develop your voice.

Practice: I encourage you to practice 20 minutes a day. An hour is ideal. Singing is like anything that you want to master: it improves with work and investigation. The voice is a curiously individual element of each person and aside from the basics of technique no two voices work the same. Our work together is to develop your unique voice and to discover how it works. Working outside our sessions on a regular basis will help you take ownership of your voice and technique.

Auditions/Performances: Please bring all music that you plan to sing in public to your sessions well in advance of the performance. We need time to investigate the music and its demands together; it will make you more confident and polished in your presentation.

For those of you who are nervous getting started, Michael is the one for you. He made me feel at ease during our first lesson. He also showed me things I could do with my voice right away, which i found shocking. He has been great at boosting my confidence and getting me to that next level. I definitely recommend Michael for anyone who is looking to start singing!!

I have been working with Michael for about 5 years and I find him to be very knowledgeable and patient. I have worked on a variety of music from classical to pop and I am always learning something new. Michael has a lot of passion and emotion when he sings which I really admire. He has helped me improve a great deal. I have seen him work with people of all ages who are at various points in their journey and he knows how to help you become your best. He has helped me improve my range and expression of emotion when I sing. I have worked hard and had fun at the same time. About Matthew
My father, Al Miller, was a prominent drum teacher on Long Island who taught hundreds of people throughout his career. My musical background began in the early 70's. From the time I was five, I would go on almost every gig my father played and sit right behind his floor tom. I began sitting in as much as possible and played my first paying job at nine years old. He entered me in the drum corps where I learned a lot about playing with other drummers and also entered me in various drum competitions. I came in first place in the state for the Louie Bellson National Drum Contest when I was 11, but failed miserably when my sight reading was not good enough to get me to the next level. I worked real hard to get my reading up to par after that.

I received full scholarships to Berklee College of Music in Boston, North Texas State University
and Miami University. I chose to attend North Texas. After school, I began studying in New York with Robbie Ameen, a truly great teacher. His instruction was so meaningful to me. I later took lessons with Kenwood Dennard which was a priceless experience. I studied with many of the greats in New York, including Joe Ascione, Joel Rosenblatt, John Riley, Kim Plainfield, Chris Parker, Jim Chapin, and, of course, my dad. Frank Bellucci was very helpful when I was experiencing pain in my right hand. There were many others including Mark Hymes for piano and Joe Cavallaro for vibraphone.

I have made a living playing various original, cover gigs and club-dates (Weddings) and in 1996 I joined Blood, Sweat and Tears and toured the U.S., Canada and South America. Playing with BS&T was a great experience for me, and certainly taught me how to deal with different personalities.

I've always worked - playing (both club-dates and music that I enjoy), teaching and producing. I run a recording studio now, which is perhaps my favorite place to be. I'm in there as much as possible.

Most recently, I spent three years touring Europe with The Healers!, a hard hitting blues band from New York.

Since 2006, I've been producing music for the Oprah Winfrey Show. While her show was on the air, you would often hear my drumming during the "Bumper Music" section in between commercial breaks or during guest introductions. I've also played on some film scores including The Christopher Walken movie, 5 Dollars a Day.

Met with Matthew at my home for my first lesson after an earlier phone chat to
discuss my background and goals.

Matthew is well spoken, motivated, friendly, and experienced in playing jazz, blues, and rock.

Lesson was a good sign of things to come. Matthew helped right away with a few tips on playing styles, kit setup, and hand grip to improve my speed and articulation.

Next few lessons will be addressing hand- foot independence and perhaps even a little jazz improve, or more advanced rock beats.

It was great to have a teacher like Matthew with both music education and field experience observe my playing and suggest improvements that work for max
effect! He's quite a drummer himself, and briefly sat on my set and illustrated a few concepts.

Exceptional Teacher

Often an accomplished musician might not make the best teacher. Matthew, however, is both an outstanding teacher and musician. The son of a well known drummer/teacher, Matt has clearly learned what it takes to be a successful teacher himself. Coupled with his personal accomplishments as a drummer, Matt has what it takes to teach drummers at any level...novice to expert. Born in Cebu City, Philippines in 1990, raised primarily in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries, and pursuing further education in the United States of America, Hopengrace ("Penny") is a Global Nomad currently situated in the Greater New York City Area.

She started taking music lessons from her mother at the age of four and learned to read music at the same time she started to read storybooks. ​From the age of ten, Hopengrace took violin lessons, during her parents' rare furloughs, from Mr. Frederico Regner, a World War II veteran returned from the United States. While in the Philippines for a combined year of junior and senior level high school, she took violin lessons from Mr. Marc Hamlet Mercado and Mr. Rodelio Flores. Hopengrace has also taken coaching from Ms. Princess Christine Ybañez to prepare for competit
ion in the Solo String (Bowed) category of the 14th National Student Convention in which she won 2nd Place.

In 2007, Hopengrace received a Presidential Scholarship from Tennessee Temple University (TTU). There she studied violin under Mrs. Laura Minor (B.Mus. Vanderbilt University, MA Music NYU). She also took piano from Mrs. Carolyn Kemp​ (BS Mus.Ed. Baptist Bible College, MA Mu. Ed. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga) and voice from Dr. William Knowles and Mr. Michael Mays (BS Mus. Perf. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, MA Church Music Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary).

In 2008, as a member of TTU's Weigle Concert Choir, Hopengrace had the privilege to be chosen to sing with a combined choir in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Dr. David Thye, Principal Conductor-in-Residence of MidAmerica Productions. She became a member of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Youth Orchestra (CSOYO) ​in the fall of that year and continued performing with them for three seasons. She also participated in the special orchestra for the annual Chattanooga Boys' Choir "Singing Christmas Tree" concerts at the Tivoli Theatre. In 2010, world-renowned violinist Midori chose CSOYO as one of two youth orchestras for her annual Orchestra Residencies Program, and Hopengrace had the rare opportunity to perform with one of her inspirations in concert.

Hopengrace​ became a registered Suzuki Method Violin Teacher with the Suzuki Association of the Americas on July 2011. She has also trained in Orff-Schulwerk.

During her travels around the world, Hopengrace struggled to keep her art alive. However, she has often been complemented for her distinctive strong, full-bodied tone​ and adaptability. Her range varies from Baroque to Modern. She plays on a John Cheng 1737 "King Joseph" Guarneri model violin with both wood and carbon fiber bows.

​Hopengrace welcomes students and employment while she prepares for entrance in a Master of Music in Performance program. She hopes to start on that new chapter of her life in the fall of 2013. Inspired by the impact of Venezuela's El Sistema program and her own experiences during her travels, Hopengrace hopes to use her talents to enable or build similar programs both while she teaches and in the lands where she was raised. ​

As a teacher, my goal is to instruct as well as inspire each student to reach for his or her highest potential. I hope to give each student the tools to progress so that one day they can be their own best teacher, and play with a sound and style that is uniquely their own. Most importantly, I hope to instill a desire to learn and a mindset that the art of violin playing is fun and that it is just as we call it--playing. My teaching abilities range from beginning through advanced levels. Students must have a desire to learn and commit to daily (mindful) practice.

I am a Suzuki Violin teacher. This means that I am trained to work with even the youngest of musicians in a nurturing , fun and challenging way. Dr. Suzuki believed that it was important to develop a noble character in all children through the mastery of a musical instrument. He also believed that all children were capable of this mastery if the environment is saturated with music and love. My students enjoy playing the violin because they are given the tools they need to play beautifully and to make progress on their instrument. Each lesson will focus on proper set up and posture, technical work and musical direction/ideas that will inspire them to carry on their work throughout the week. I demonstrate quite a bit in the lessons, as I find it is the most effective way to communicate in music. However, I am only with the student once a week, therefore much of the lesson is geared towards helping the parent and child understand what his/her home tasks are, and how to carry them out successfully. 10 minutes of mindful practice is worth an hour of careless work.

​Parental support and involvement is key to any child’s progress, especially at the beginning stages. Parents of young beginners are encouraged to take a few lessons before starting their child on the instrument. Parents serve as a practice coach/partner during daily home practice sessions and are required to attend and participate in their child’s lessons. Listening to recordings and attending live concerts are strongly recommended to increase musical awareness and enthusiasm in the student.

In spite of my rigorous Suzuki training, my unorthodox learning experience has taught me the value of being flexible and using methods that work best for a specific individual. I am not averse to seeking and applying a new method (eg. traditional, Masterclass, O'Connor, etc.) if the situation calls for it.

What should be expected from a Teacher/Student relationship?

I think a student should expect their teacher to give them honest, thoughtful feedback. Just enough that they can manage the information at that time. The teacher should give detailed instruction on ways the student can improve, without destroying the students sense of self worth or spirit. On the contrary, the teacher must always find a way to see the student as having great potential. This way, no matter how limited the current level of ability may be, there is hope for growth. Even without saying it, the student will feel the teachers' attitude towards him and may become that person (for better or for worse). The student should expect to be challenged, encouraged and inspired by their teacher. The teacher should expect that the student and the parents commit to daily practice, and have a desire to improve. The student must apply his/her teacher's feedback while always searching within himself for ways to develop. Mutual respect is key.

My children have been taking piano lessons with Tamara since 2005. Both started when they were 6 years old. She is amazing! Tamara is SO knowledgeable and has a gift for teaching. She is a serious teacher and has pushed my children to reach their fullest potential. She has always done so with understanding and kindness though. They love her. I travel more than 1/2 hour each way for their lessons but it is definitely worth it! My children have progressed much more quickly than their peers studying with other piano teachers. They have been exposed to pieces from various composers and studied music theory as well. Both have taken several NYSSMA exams and they've both scored at the highest level on every one. My daughter has already completed all 6 levels. My son is 13 years old and planning to take level 5 next Spring. I would HIGHLY recommend her for students of all levels and ages. She can teach the beginner as well as the more advanced. She has also been VERY flexible with lesson days and times. [working around my son's busy sports schedule]. She is a treasure in Glen Cove!

I was studying with Tamara for 4 years. I started as a beginner when I was 13 years old and I was able to pass NISSMA level 6 with the highest score. Tamara is a great teacher, very patient and in the same time also demanding. It was a pleasure.

As a former master's student at The Eastman School of Music and a lifelong musician, I've yet to encounter a voice teacher as perceptive, honest, patient, and encouraging as Mr. Tompkins. One of the best pedagogues and technicians I've encountered, his repertoire knowlege and ability to discern what is hindering a singer's progress is quite remarkable. Within an hour of working with him, he was able to fine tune and efficiently improve what was impeding my progress. That 60 minute session was more productive than in an entire semester at conservatory. A world class singer, Mr. Tompkins is as accomplished a voice teacher as he is a performer. Highly recommended.

My approach to music education is one that puts musical expression first and then applies technique as appropriate to an individual's virtues. Oboe in particular is an instrument whose complexity lends itself to dogmatic approaches that can stifle individual growth.
