It cultivates the ability to hear music more intelligently and teach yourself several instruments. People that can pick up and play any instrument with minimal effort, likely have a very good foundation in music theory. Music theory also cultivates the ability for the ear to recognize context and patterns in music you already know. It is one of my greatest passions and I love to share it with anyone who is interested :)

About Julian
My musical background is uniquely rooted in classical training and popular music (non-classical) experience. I have professionally played toured and/or taught on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years all over the world. My main focus has been bass guitar, on which I've played in over a dozen local bands. In addition, I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a joyful platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Growing up and playing in Hawaii and Colorado, I have had the opportunity to l
earn from prolific, passionate and talented musicians from all over the globe. With my students, I love to share my experience, appreciation for eclecticism, nuance and groove while also emphasizing the importance of a theoretical foundation in music and comprehension of aural skills (hearing music in a theoretical context) as a means to fluent apprehension in any genre. *** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide most necessary lesson materials, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I may request that students buy some materials such as tuners (for stringed instruments), lesson books, or music applications, but these are optional purchases.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I can teach in my home studio in South Boulder if that is your preference. The studio has keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, ukulele and vocal microphones. Students should bring their own instruments to the studio lessons (drums and piano provided in the studio) Parents may attend the lessons if they choose.

***Some additional background to my experience***
I grew up "noodling". I avoided the difficult task of learning to read proficiently until I was almost 18. Looking back I realize that for me, music was a way to relax and pause internal dialogue. I would create music, especially on the piano that was entirely my own, and based solely on intuition. I got by in piano lessons and choir for so many years as kid by relying on an intuitive ability to aurally recall music and "play by ear". Eventually, I was turned on to the necessity of being able to read when I was accepted into a nationally competitive choral program at Fairview High School under the direction of Ron Revier. Shortly after that, I picked up a guitar and discovered music theory.
Realizing that reading, and theory were inherently different things allowed by to accelerate quickly at music theory which opened so many doors for me creatively. Suddenly, my ability to improvise in context and write my own songs was born.
I realized that every note I sang or played was part of an essential structure, whether or not I was paying attention to it. This is why I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory in conjunction with whatever repertoire or skillset a student wants to learn. These things facilitate becoming one's own teacher which is the most important thing I can pass on to a student. If you can contextualize everything you hear, you can more easily pursue whatever type of music inspires you.
Understanding theoretical things like musical modes creates a structure around the seemingly elusive nature of musical improvisation. It comes naturally to some, but is stubbornly avoided by others. I assure you, anyone can do it with some guidance. Through the years, I have developed a handful of shortcuts and tools that allow elementary musicians to start creating their own music that is not necessarily oriented in genre or style, but can be applied to all of them. Julian has spent lots and lots of fun time with his nephews and nieces (age 13-2), playing music with and teaching--ukulele, piano, guitar and drums over the last few years, and as a result they all have some great skills, confidence, and excitement about music. He's kind and very tuned in to where his students are.
I'm his Dad so I've seen how rewarding it can be for his students. He's also given me a basic set of skills on the guitar. It goes without saying, I recommend him highly!!

As a beginning bass player with no previous experience, my daughter was relunctant to start online lessons. Julian quickly established a rapport with her. She now looks forward to her weekly lesson and even practices daily (a miracle) after school. Julian has taken the time to build a good relationship with my shy daughter, and she thinks he is wonderful. I am impressed by his willingness to not just teach the mechanics of playing, but to build a relationship with his students. I would recommend this dedicated and patient teacher.

Will is from a long line of World Renowned Drummers. His uncle Ed played in the Tonite show band with Johnny Carson, his cousin plays drums for Billy Joel ( Liberty DeVito). Will himself took to the drums at the age of 7. By 13 years old he was already gigging in special events, Jazz Bands and local community concerts. For most of us drummers and rhythmatists we cannot go an hour without banging something or tapping or humming or moving.. if this describes you or your child then Im the guy who would be delighted to foster your development in your lifelong pursuit of the ultimate beat. Im pretty laid back with teaching discipline. Either you got it or you dont. I cannot push you or force you into practicing.. You must inherently love music and love rhythm and love drumming or percussion. If I am working with you on Kit drumming you will be starting out with the basics unless you have experience. I normally do an assessment to determine where you are at.. If I am teaching you hand percussion or African or Asian based drums then its strictly an aural based learning experience. No books just memorization. Kit drumming will require either you have your own Drum kit if I am coming to your house or of you travel to my studio I will have 1 drum kit to share , but you must have your own sticks. I do employ books in Drum Kit lessons. I will give you the names of the books based on what I think your level is and we can go from there..

*** Lesson Details ***
Almost all of my students learn bar chords and how to use them in song they want to play in the first hour of lesson time.

Almost all of my students begin in the first lesson with songs like Little Wing and Georgia On My Mind, and Stairway To Heaven, with the right chords in sheet music form. Once you learn how to do that you can begin to take yourself through songbooks, if you learn how to use the printed music, there is a vast amount of it available everywhere.

Almost all of my students are reading melodies using real notation by the 4th or 5th lesson. Reading melodies they like and want to play. Although my students know how to use tab, Notation is the best way and they all prefer it, once they know the difference. Like the Stairway To Heaven Solo, or any of the beautiful Spanish melodies from J.Rodrigo, or blues ,jazz,rock and roll, once you can read, you can read anything in print on your own.

All of my students learn rhythm skills playing scales and songs with a metronome, so you learn how to play in time, as you develop stronger rhythm skills you can play better alone or with other people.

All of my students learn the Music Theory. What Time Signatures are and mean, Scales and scale harmonization. Chord progressions and playing through the chord changes. All of these and more are the fundamentals you will begin to work on in the first 4-5 hours of lessons with me.
I just don't show you songs, I teach you to teach yourself and begin to become musically independent.
Work on picking and speed and most importantly touch and feel.
Work on Finger picking as well, learn to use all 5 fingers on your right hand. or use the pick and 3 fingers, with me you WILL use your pinky or little finger.
By 3-4 months we will have covered the fundamentals and be working on more advanced material, songs and technique.

I have increased my lesson frequency to two one-hour sessions per week simply because of my progress under David's direction. After only three months of weekly lessons, I can now read music and play while reading. David has introduced me to effective melodic soloing, has significantly improved my understanding of barre chords up and down the fretboard, and has convinced me to abandon "guitaristic" thinking in favor of really understanding the potential of the guitar beyond shape memorization.

For those players serious about music, who are willing to devote the time and attention required to improve, and who appreciate not only learning to play guitar but the theory and history behind the music, David is your man. I have taken lessons in the past, usually consisting of a teacher asking what riffs I wanted to work on that day. Sound familiar? Not David. Within the first two weeks, he has me focused on plucking the strings with more feel, using a pick and fingers simultaneously with my right hand, practicing scales to the tempo of a metronome while using the forwards and backwards technique, etc. He has convinced me that I can become as accomplished a player as I put my mind and heart to. His mantra is to work towards playing at the speed of thought, which, for the first time in my life, looks to be a possibility with time. Thank you, David.

Just had my first lesson with David. Gave a wealth of info now it's up to me but with his approach I know it will be all good. Have had other teachers but David is not only an accomplished player he is also is able to instruct and teach. Will write again after a few more lessons.

Phil is so wonderful. After I retired I wanted to learn to play the flute, so I signed up for 30 minutes. I signed for 30 because you never know if you and the instructor are going to get along. I discovered that while I was in session I did fairly well. But once home alone, I would end up in tears. I decided to go from learning the flute to learning the clarinet. I was afraid I would have to find another teacher, but no. Phil pulled out his clarinet and I have been happy ever since! He has a calm demeanor, never talks down to you, multi-talented and encourages you. I finally had to go from 30 minutes to an hour. I found I would have about 15 minutes of questions on symbols, word meanings, etc.; which only left me 15 minutes of actual music. So this may also be something to think about.

I earned my B.A. in Music with a minor in Italian Studies from Santa Clara University. I am currently getting my master's degree in education from Santa Clara University while working on a high school teaching credential. I have taught students from 5 year old to 70 year old and I studied classical singing with the most renown singers and teachers. I also had special training in music multiple times in Italy. I helped many people with pitch issues, tone quality, musicality, performance, and acting. My students were able to build their confidence; they turned from beginners to performers. I have performed with many great singers around the world and have experience singing in opera productions, choirs, solo recitals, to name a few. The knowledge my students get are the essence from not only all my musical experience, also all my teachers a

I set my expectations high for all students. Students are expected to learn all the assigned music and practice throughout the week. Music is fun but it also takes a lot of work. However, students' progress will vary. As long you are eager to learn, passion about music, diligent with the work, you will far exceed even your own expectations.

Most of my students improve tremendously in a short period of time. I not only teach them singing, phrasing, and language, but I stress vocal techniques, emotions behind music, acting in character, and performing as a professional.

I just had my first lesson with Brett and he customized it according to my individual needs and circumstance. I am passionate about guitar and folk music but have no musical experience. Bretts plan is to start with the very basics and move forward from there. He was very patient with me and his directions were easy to follow. A specialty of mine is teaching jazz improvisation to all instruments including voice. Jazz is a language and I teach it like one. It is a very conversational style of music. My lessons with improvisation are very fun and interactive. You will be a more creative musician as you improve as an improviser and develop skills necessary to play professionally and jam with other musicians. Much of what I teach is developing the musical ear in terms of relative pitch through interval exercises so that the barrier between your mind and instrument will be less of an obstacle.

My name is Jesse and I am a guitarist who lives in Seattle, WA. I graduated from the University of Southern California with Cum Laude Honors in 2015. I maintain a busy schedule of performances accompanying jazz singers in the area and I am on faculty at Cornish College of the Arts as an accompanist in the jazz voice department.

I began teaching beginning guitar lessons to friends and classmates in high school. Ever since I picked up the guitar, I knew it was something that I wanted to pursue professionally because of the joy that it brought me. Being able to share that with other people is something I am very passionate about. I continued teaching beginning guitar and advanced jazz harmony to other guitarists in the music program to help pay tuition in college at USC. I taught at Music and Arts in Redmond during the summer after finish
ing college before moving to the Bothell store within the same organization. I also began teaching at the Andrew White School of Music around the same time. I teach beginners on both guitar and bass as well as jazz improvisation on guitar.

Jazz is a style of music I specialize in and I teach it like teaching a language as I firmly believe that jazz is a language. I teach improvisation to not only guitar, but to all instruments as the concepts are the same. Improvisation lessons are fun and interactive and challenge you to be creative, which is what art is all about!

My teaching method is very flexible, as I am very aware that students learning styles and goals vary greatly. I am a patient teacher who will work to help put a student in a position to be successful and achieve his or her goals through lesson plans and teaching methods tailored to meet the student's learning style. Seeing students succeed and have fun making progress and improving as a musician brings me a lot of joy!

There is nothing more frustrating for a student than feeling like they're treading water trying to teach themselves. My goal is to make the learning process as fun as possible! One of the ways I do that is giving the student the opportunity to experiment with improvisation and explore the instrument during lessons and for when they practice at home to supplement the more formal training. This helps students develop their own individual sound on the instrument from day one, is fun and interactive, and gives the student the chance to be creative when learning a new instrument.

My daughter is 14 years old and although she had been playing the guitar for several years she was ready to advance to jazz guitar. She began lessons with Jesse and it was instant progress, she always enjoys the lessons and she is really good thanks to the constant support of her teacher Jesse, she plays in the school jazz band and has shown huge improvement over the past year. Jesse is extremely flexible which has really helped us with our daughters busy schedule. I would recommend Jesse to anyone interested in quality guitar lessons.

Through the foundation I've gained by the influences of Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and Suzuki musical instruction methods, I compile my own teaching materials. Using personally constructed guitar lessons, I demonstrate, instruct, and guide the student based on my assessment of their individual needs, skill level, and progress. Lessons are formulated in Modules, and advancement through them is based on the student's personal aptitude, skill level, and practice commitment. Learning is accomplished by ear as well as through essential methods of musical notation (tablature, 5-line staff, rhythmic comprehension). Students are trained to perform written music as well as to write and express the music within themselves.
I'm an encouraging and motivating guitar teacher with a casual relaxed approach. Teaching new guitarists is very rewarding to me. To see the light come on and watch a student perform a song, express themselves musically, and create their own composition is an awesome experience.

I loved my guitar lessons from Mr. Smith. He made learning the guitar fun and easy. I also liked the short devotionals we did. I would definitely recommend Mr. Smith to anyone who wants to learn the guitar. Her is a great teacher!

About Macy
I am currently in my final year of college at Kansas State University dual-majoring in Vocal Performance and Apparel & Textile Marketing with a minor in Business Administration. This May I will have a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. I have been training in classical voice since 2008, and I have taught students in classical voice and musical theater since 2013.

Because of my extensive musical background, I am able to incorporate music theory and aural skills into my lessons. These skills help students become more well-rounded musicians and help them understand why they're learning what they're learning. I am also experienced in choosing the right literature for every voice.

Not only do I include music theory and aural skills in my lessons, I also teach my students to embrace the uniqueness of their voices. Instead of teaching st
udents to model other opera and musical theater singers, I strive to teach them to maximize and improve upon the voice they were given. Every voice is unique, and every voice is beautiful.
