Read my REVIEWS!! I specialize in working with beginners and teach foundation skills for using a sewing machine, following a pattern, handwork, and finishing.

I can help you make curtains, pillows, bags, aprons and other household items. If you want to make clothing, I will guide you through using a published pattern.

I have been sewing for over 30 years and was making my own clothes by the time I was in second grade. My lessons are not like reality TV. Projects take longer than you may think they will. I will work with you to properly construct a quality finished project.

Please note, I do not teach pattern making, draping, and advanced tailoring. My experience with serger/marrow machines is limited.

Students are expected to provide all tools and materials but I will help you find what you need for your project.

Recommend duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes.

About Kim
For creative people and makers, crafting is like going to the gym. You will find great fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment if you set aside time on a regular basis to nurture this very important part of what makes you who you are. Think of me like a personal trainer. I will encourage and inspire you while you develop your skills and express yourself through a variety of textile based media.

Private and group lessons or classes are provided in locations around the NYC area, in my space or via webcam. My focus is on providing an entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable experience as you learn a leisure time activity. I am extremely patient and detail oriented. When you let me know what you would like to learn or make, I will guide you through everything from selecting materials to fine tuning your technique. Take a lesson with me to fi
nd out why my students love me.

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.

I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.

If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.

*** Lesson Details ***
Please let me know what you would like to learn or make before your lesson so that we may be fully prepared with any materials, tools, equipment, books or handouts. Students are expected to provide all their own tools and materials unless other arrangements are made.

Recommended duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes. A surcharge may be added for travel outside of areas accessible by one MTA fare or expected travel time exceeding 90 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
Textile based crafts including crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, patchwork, plastic canvas, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, bobbin lace, historic textile and costume conservation and storage, and more.

I also love to research and develop craft projects for classes or master techniques students would like to learn.

Exactly what I was looking for. My daughter had surgery last week and I wanted her to be able to learn to knit while she's at home for the next ten days. Kim was upbeat and clearly competent. She also went out of her way to help me (a leftie knitter) learn how to help my daughter if she ran into snags. Thank you, Kim!

My sewing curriculum is designed so that first time learners will feel motivated to keep on sewing. The first three projects are usually completed within the first 3-4 lessons. After learning how to operate the student's machine, together we will make a draw string bag, a skirt (for a doll, for a student or someone else) and a stuffed animal. These first three projects lay an important foundation; students learn basic and useful skills they will use over and over again as they begin to choose their own projects that we work on together.

I believe that if the student- whether a child or an adult- enjoys sewing and sees what they are capable of from the start, they will be more eager to learn more and take on new challenges.

Currently developing sewing worksheets for children.

About Melissa
Hi there! I'm Melissa, and I am a fashion design and sewing teacher on Staten Island. I have been teaching children and adults how to sew since 2014. I've been sewing since I was a child, and I've been teaching since 2007.

I am mostly self-taught, and that, coupled with my youth, gives me a unique perspective when teaching. My first goal is to give my students all of the tools they need to feel confident from the very first lesson- almost all of my students finish the first hour with a handy drawstring bag to keep their new sewing supplies in. I have a specific sewing curriculum for the first 3-5 lessons that helps lay a groundwork for making more exciting things.

After we finish those steps, I work individually with students to make whatever they would like, from Halloween costumes to memory pillows to peplum tops. The choice is
yours. I'm not the kind of teacher that is going to make you spend hours mastering a straight hem because frankly, that's really boring. I want you to learn while working on projects you care about

My experience includes;

-I worked in a tutoring school teaching kids from ages 5-17 in all subjects.
-I designed a program called Creative Studios for creative writing, fashion design and fine art. I taught these subjects to students aged 8-12.
-I teach sewing and fashion design (including fashion drawing) to various students in a one on one format.
-I teach fashion design and sewing to tweens, teens, and adults at SI Dance and Arts Center
-I am a resident costumer for Sundog Theatre.
-I taught at the Harlem Educational Activities Fund Saturday Academy
-I am pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Education in Social Studies

Please note that I am located in Staten Island, NY. I may be able to accommodate some Brooklyn students, but please inquire before booking. I have locations in 10306 and 10309 that can accommodate students if you don't wish to learn in home.

My studio space is located at Staten Island Dance and Art Center. It's a lovely, artsy space with bright yellow walls, four sewing machines, 2 professional mannequins, and a closet full of fabric and notions!

My substantial areas of expertise are women and men patternmaking, draping, garment construction (sewing), tailoring, technical drawing, concepts sketching, from basic to advance skill set. I am also a big fan of incorporating recycled / repurposing materials such as leather, suede into garments.I encourage students to construct their own learning in an environment that stimulates and helps students to realize their full potential.

About Hasaan
I have obtained a degree in Menswear Design and Marketing from Fashion Institute of Technology and a degree in Applied Science Visual Communications from Katharine Gibbs School. I’ve taught garment construction, sketching and CAD design classes (Adobe Suite) for five years and have over 17 years of experience in the fashion industry. I have taught these skills to adolescents and adults in various programs including: Day and evening classes in afterschool s, summer programs
As a teacher, my main goal is to motivate students to do their best and extend their own personal limits. I devise programs, according to syllabus requirements, that expand on previous knowledge and encourage students to explore new and interesting possibilities. I had a tight time schedule to finish a summer project before I went in for surgery and Hasaan was very sensitive to that. He was able to teach me new skills in pattern making and cutting that made the process easier/ more accurate as well as sewing techniques. I would say my experience with him was very positive and he was always cheerful and and in a great mood and helped me out a lot with my project. I would definitely recommend using him for lessons.

Hasaan Roselle has taught and directed our summer camp program, Camp Fashion Design for four years now. His passion for fashion is clearly evident as he steps our campers through the basics of sketching and fashion construction. Girls are intrigued and motivated as he shares with them his knowledge of fashion and his many years of experience in the industry. Moreover, his easy going personality and his attention to every detail make him a wonderful choice for a fashion design instructor. We have found him to be patient, caring and considerate with our students as they learn the intricate ins and outs of this sometimes overwhelming industry. Not only is he encouraging, he also allows students to step 'outside of the box' and to explore new ideas instead of always following the conventional path. We like that a lot. This is how the next generation of new, young designers is created! We highly recommend his services and we look forward to him joining us once again next summer at Camp Fashion Design!

About Amelie
Hi my name is Amelie and I have been teaching children how to sew since November of 2015. At my job I've helped my students perfect their craft of sewing from square one as well as creating costumes for school plays. I am a designer in the making and am in the process of creating a business and would love to teach others the art of sewing. I am very patient, reliable, prompt and can work with all age groups. I have also had my fingerprints done by the DOE and DOH (if I were to take on child students).

Also, I am one of the few teachers in the country who teaches the exclusive "Freehand" sewing, which is sewing without ready-made (commercial) pattern, like our grandparents did.
As a social worker, I taught participants in a homeless shelter, how to make various items geared towards independent living. For six years now, I've been teaching at a fabric store in East Harlem where patrons sign up for group sewing lessons as well as private lessons. I teach garment construction, alterations, home decor, and various sewing projects.

May I begin by saying and lessons can include parent and child for the price of one.
My background includes a BA in Fashion Design, specializing in couture and beadwork. I began shipping thrift stores in the early 70s and tweaking my funds.
I have been pressed to find sewing courses or TV shows that cater to anyone interested in high fashion, modern style or current trends.
I also spent many years in the interior design business in San Diego, San Francisco and NYC specializing in slipcovers, upholstery and soft furnishings as well as carpentry.
Whatever your passion in reference to textiles be it fine handwork, tailored pieces, repurposed, vintage, funky or select items for the home, I can guide you through it and help
You put your own style and personal stamp on your work.

About Leslie
Inspired by hours paging through the French Vogue with my grandmother who would read the text for me and tell me about all the designers and what made each of them special, I set my sights on Fashion Design at the age of 9. I studied sewing throughout high school and then went on to get a degree in Clothing/Costume design at Brooks College of Design in Los Angeles and apprenticed under the beading master to Hollywoods Costumers (Bob Mackie, Nolan Miller) and learned a rare and dying art of French Embroidery beadwork.
After years working for designers making everything from leather/suede beaded evening gowns for the Country Music Awards to wedding dresses I slowly became more interested in Interiors and soft furnishings. I became a subcontractor for Interior Designers in San Diego and later San Francisco and continued such work in New Yor
k. Later I added carpentry to my list of skills and became a Green remodeler until the Crash.
Today I most enjoy being free to follow my whims. I like to refurbish old furniture, upholster, slipcover and also do the same with clothing. I love vintage and vintage inspired clothes as well as anything finely made. I imagined being a couturier and costume designer for Broadway, but alas I am a humble artisan in my free time only.
I am not a quilter or crafter, but I can do it if required. I prefer detailed handwork, funnily, whimsical or high fashion sewing.
I enjoy helping people with beginning to advanced projects and can bring the classroom to you.
