I offer lessons to students that have a desire to improve their playing and knowledge of music.
A brief summarization of my process:
-Establish concepts for healthy practice routine with the student. The type of practice is more important than the raw amount of practice.
-Set a 3-4 month goal for study outlining key issues. -Identify strengths and areas of improvement in the student as they appear in the weeks. -At the end of the 3 months, all this work and practice comes together in either a recital or a special project (audition, recording, etc.).
-Retrospective review and planning for next set of months.
Within the above framework, I try to encourage:
-Appreciation of music and learning as a whole -Organization! And techniques to improve it. -Analytical skills (micro and macro)
-Initiative -- taking a proactive attitude towards one’s learning -Communication
Pedro is an excellent teacher. He's able to blend the technical aspects of playing with the artistry of the instrument. I've already learned a great deal from him in only five lessons.

Versatile Instructor for All Ages
I'm an adult student, but you can feel a comfort and relaxed atmosphere in the immediate presence of Pedro. This is such an important factor in learning an instrument. This feeling would serve to greatly help and child right on through adult learning. Good Job!
Instructions are based on custom curriculum for every student. The curriculum is based on student's desires and abilities and compiled from multiple sources.
Classically trained, energetic, experienced and creative music teacher with a proven ability to get the very best out of pupils; experienced in identifying the appropriate resources necessary for a subject matter and ensuring that they are used efficiently and effectively. Most of my students read and play simple music after 2-3 classes of active instruction.
I also specialize in special needs students.
All my musical knowledge and expertise was attained in Eastern Europe with an extensive music pedagogy training. I play and teach piano, upright bass, bass guitar and a range of other instruments. Over the years I taught basic piano, the beginner violin, viola, cello and a variety of school instruments such as recorder and xylophone. I also teach advanced music theory, harmony and basics of composition and orchestral arranging req
uired for music colleges. I especially find it rewarding working with beginners and the opportunity to show them the amazing world of listening, playing and making music.
The teaching begins with identifying student's musical needs, goals and tastes. Students are taught a stimulating, thorough, and graduated course of recital solos, theory, technical studies, and classic repertoire. For those wishing to pursue more of a classical approach to music, there are proven methods to accomplish that goal established by European master teachers and pedagogues. Also, I can teach the know-how of Jazz and Blues though gradual lessons that cover basic theory, scales and chords up to melody and harmony development.
*** Lesson Details *** The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. From basic piano and stringed instruments, to advanced theory, harmony, composition and improvisation to jazz, pop and rock.
Classes are not based on a single source or book. I provide other exercises in printed form for students to keep and take home.

Peter has exceeded my expectations, I look forward for my lesson every week. I honestly can say He is the best teacher I’ve ever had. I am a 44 yo violin beginner student who has had 5 teachers in the last 6 years, I didn’t learn much with them, this been said, with Peter in just 3 months I feel I have learned more than my other teachers. Peter is so, so patient and extremely professional. I am very pleased to have found such a wonderful teacher.

Peter has been teaching bass to our son for several years and our son has become quite proficient. It's a bonus that Peter is unfailingly upbeat, professional, and a pleasure to have around. He truly loves music and conveys his appreciation to his students - so much so that now my husband is taking cello lessons from Peter, too.

My son has been taking lessons from Cristina for 2 years and wow has he progressed. He loves his lessons, can read music, and is playing well. The struggle is getting him to practice! Cristina has a great blend of warmth, knowledge and discipline that works well for my 6,7, and now 8 year old son. I highly recommend her.

Our 8 year old had been taking violin for two years and was about to the point of quitting due to the lack of motivational teaching. I went in search of a teacher that could motivate her while still progressing rapidly each week! My daughter is so eager to please Cristina, because she makes the lessons fun and interesting. When I check in to see how the lesson is going, my daughter is engaged, and answering questions correctly which tells me she's still paying attention - even in the evening hours when she's tired. Cristina mixes classical and popular music as well. I still have to ask my daughter to practice each night but she pulls out her violin on her own a couple of times a week as well. It's a complete 180 from where we were 8 months ago. Cristina is a rare find and I'd recommend her to anyone who wants to ensure their child is getting the best violin training while being inspired!

Our 11 year old daughter, Drew, started with Cristina for a little over a year, and has made some amazing progress from not knowing how to play, to having great intonation and musicality. Cristina teaches our daughter in a way that works with her interests and learning style, rather than having a regimented curriculum. I think this has allowed Drew to be way more excited about playing.
i've been playing music all my life but since i'm a square parent, it's hard for me to teach drew :) Cristina does a great job giving her guidance during the lesson.
i would highly recommend her as a teacher!

-- Zeynep Alpan Biography --
Turkish-American violinist, Zeynep Alpan, started studying the violin at the age of 5 as part of her music therapy treatment for her diagnosis of speech delay and Auditory Processing Disorder. Immediately after being introduced to the violin, Zeynep began to speak and following a year and a half of violin studies, she had her first solo appearance with Vivaldi’s A minor Violin Concerto, after winning the Peabody Concerto Competition.
As a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician, Zeynep has appeared in a myriad of venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, and the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. She has also performed as a soloist at the Turkish American Women Leadership Event on Capitol Hill as well as at the Focus Festival: On the Air! at Lincoln Center.
Zeynep co-founded the Turkish-American Cultural Laboratory (TACL), which brings together and integrates the Turkish and American cultures through the arts. As director of this organization, Zeynep produces a multitude of events including workshops in public schools in NYC and Istanbul, commissioning new works by American and Turkish composers, and inter-disciplinary performances in the US and Turkey. Aside from music, Zeynep enjoys taking business classes at Columbia University through the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange program, drinking tea, biking, and being an avid dog lover.
My daughter had the pleasure of taking lessons with Zeynep this past summer in the PALS program in Aspen. She loved each week when it was lesson time. This is what Addison had to say, "She always would say the area I needed to work on nicely. I loved that she gave me knew things to learn at each lesson. If I didn't understand, she would keep encouraging me until I did." This was an excellent experience!

A unique and special experience! My daughter always looked forward to her sessions with Zeynep. She has been her mentor for the past two summers at the PALS program. Once after a lesson my daughter told me that she was surprised how much better she played the song after her session with Zeynep. I love the way Zeynep engages with my daughter and brings out the best in her.

Zeynep was my teacher for the PALS summer program in Aspen. Her positive attitude made my weekly lesson enjoyable. My playing improved greatly during my summer with her. She helped me become a stronger player. Watching her perform in the orchestra was inspiring.

What does it really take to master violin vibrato? The technique doesn't always come naturally to students, so persistence and practice should be no-brainers. And of course, working with a qualified violin teacher. If you're struggling, check out this helpful advice from Bolingbrook, IL teacher Kelvin L...
For too long students have been told that vibrato is an emotional urge; that it will just come when it is needed. But please don’t think that vibrato is just going to happen magically.
