I've had the pleasure of working along side Marie as a colleague. I was able to witness first hand her compassionate nature and her dedication towards her students and towards teaching. She sets the bar high for her students but helps them along in a caring and patient manner so that they can achieve all their goals. She is knowledgeable and experienced in her subject matter and I have no doubt that she can help your child reach success.

I had Ms. Marie for French and she was one of my favourite teachers. The amount of patience that she had with some of my very troublesome classmates was very inspiring because I always wondered how was she able to keep her composure so well. Her teaching methods worked and she always taught in a manner in which you would have no choice but to learn

French is my second language, but it often feels as it if were the first, as I have been speaking it for so many years on an everyday, educational, and professional basis. I have official native-level proficiency. My grammar is excellent, as I learned the rules in junior high school in the Paris suburbs (grammar is an important part of French schooling). Culture is also a big part of learning a language, and I am well versed in French literature, pop culture, idioms, and more.
Recently, one of my first TakeLessons students passed her B2 exam, which allows her to apply to French universities. It's not an easy exam, the culmination of several years of classes and several months of test-prepping.
I edited a 240-page scholarly book in French, "De La Case A La Villa" (published 2014), and have spoken on French-language television and at professional conferences.
I give both private and group lessons.

"I first met Philppe while I was a French student taking one on one classes at DLS during a 6 month period. He was not my instructor but we crossed paths daily, as his office was next door to the classroom I used. He was always testing my skills and offering assistance where he saw necessary. At the end of my 6 month course, I continued on with more job training that allowed me an additional 40 hours of French so that it was fresh on the mind prior to arriving at my next post. Philippe was my instructor during that period, which is something I will always be grateful for. Due to my foundation in French, we did not need to cover many basics but instead created a lesson plan that involved widening my knowledge of the local culture and politics in the country of my future assignment. He taught me how to express my opinions while casually conversing in French (which has proven to be invaluable in my line of work). He challenged me to expand my vocabulary in numerous areas while incorporating more advanced, sophisticated grammar when appropriate. Philippe was a great instructor and mentor. I am grateful for the time I was able to learn from him and look forward to refreshing my skills with him in the future."

"Roman is a wonderful teacher. Can't say enough about what a great teacher Roman is—not only when it comes to French learning but also learning in general. He embodies a perfect balance of being observant, always noticing where your weaknesses are and being encouraging, always making you feel like you can do it. He's patient yet always pushes you to do better. Not everyone who knows French is a good French teacher. You need to know how to teach. And Roman knows how to teach. This sets him apart from all the French tutors I've had in the past. I feel much more confident and, for the first time, I come to believe if I put in the work, I can really speak French."

"Bonjour, I highly recommend Philippe as a professor for French learners at any level, but particularly for new learners. I felt that I made huge progress as he was able to identify the weaknesses in either my vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar, and then explain and help me understand how to overcome those weaknesses. He accommodated my pace of learning, was always encouraging, and simply "got it" in terms of what I needed to stay motivated and moving forward. Working with him was a pleasure and you can be certain that a new French speaker will feel accompanied, fully supported, and will walk away having made great progress. Merci."

Bonne Fête des Mères! French Vocabulary for Mother's Day

Here in the states, we celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May (psst that's May 10 this year!), but did you know that in France Mother's Day, known as la fête des mères, is celebrated either the last Sunday of May or the first Sunday in June? Despite the difference in timing, the French celebrate Mother's Day in many of the same ways we do, but with a few uniquely French touches. First things first, if you want to celebrate this holiday as the French do, you'll need to know a bi …

French Vocabulary Hacks: How to Tell if a Word is Masculine or Feminine

How can a word be masculine or feminine, and how do you tell the difference? Tutor Willy M. shares some secrets to help you memorize your French vocabulary... One of the hardest things for many students of French to learn is how to tell the difference between masculine and feminine French nouns. Gender with regards to words is not something we spend a lot of time thinking about in English, but in French vocabulary every single noun will have either a masculine gender or a feminine gender. French Grammar Rules: Distinguishing Between Imparfait and Passé Composé

French grammar guru Carol Beth L. is back on the blog with this guide to the passé composé, the imparfait, and when you should use each of them... If you've been studying French grammar long enough, you may know that French has two different forms of the past tense: the passé composé (composed past) and the imparfait (imperfect). It is sometimes difficult for those who have just learned them to distinguish between situations that require the passé composé and situations that wa …
