Hi! My name is Michelle. I’m a professional guitar and banjo player, and music teacher! I teach all levels of classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bluegrass and folk guitar. I also specialize in all levels of clawhammer banjo, but also offer 3-finger Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo lessons. I also teach all styles and levels of ukulele from basic strumming patterns to fingerpicking chord melodies.
I cater my lessons to each individual student. I love teaching all levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never picked up an instrument in your life…there’s no such thing as a hopeless case!! I work on building a strong foundation of form a
nd technique in all of my students regardless of level, whether you’re just starting out or are a more experienced player with some bad habits to break or looking to add to your musical toolbox!
My formal training is classical, I have a Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master’s degree from Eastman School of Music, both in classical guitar performance. That being said, I’m a little different than most classically trained teachers, in that I have traveled outside of the classical world to the folk traditions of old-time and bluegrass music, and I am very passionate about this music. I also tour regularly with a folk/Americana trio called Harpeth Rising, which combines both classical and folk traditions into original music (but don't worry, it won't interfere much with teaching!)
My teaching style reflects my combination of influences. My style is fluid, and I work with each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses create a learning environment that is comfortable, relaxed, and ultimately very effective. I also expect my students to schedule regular practicing into their daily routines, which is something I also help my students with.
Thanks for visiting my page!
**Availability notice: As I am a touring musician, my availability is flexible. For online lessons, I may need to reschedule times while I'm on tour. For in person lessons, we may need to reschedule missed lesson while I'm on tour. This will happen infrequently, but I thought I'd give fair warning!
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide my own instrument, and I expect my students to have an instrument of their own. If you need help purchasing an instrument I have 8 years of experience and knowledge of fretted stringed instruments, so I am happy to help advise you once you purchase lessons!
The mission of my studio is to create well-rounded, educated musicians who will always have a lifelong passion for the art no matter their long-term goals. I strive for my students to be:
(1) Lifelong learners who develop successful learning habits. (2) Creative and critical thinkers who will become effective communicators. (3) Responsible and respectful members of society who respect other cultures. (4) Able to set short-term and long-term goals and be able to see them through to their success.
It is of the utmost importance that my students are well-educated in their chosen instrument; they must know and understand music and music-making. Students who can play are a dime a dozen, but students who understand the music they are playing are often hard to find. I teach students to kno
w music thoroughly, not just to “play.” I desire my students to comprehend elements of the score, to use their bodies effectively to make good sound, and to interpret music creatively and according to historical performance practices across all genres of music. Thus, I give students a purposeful education in technique, quality literature, performance and artistry, music theory, and music history.
Although students differ in ability and development, I maintain high expectations for our students. I expect attention and respect in lessons, faithful and diligent practice, careful adherence to instructions, and an “I’ll-do-my-best” attitude. If students regularly meet these expectations, then they will excel to the level that they are able. It is my joy to help students master their music, to do the best they can, and to strive for and achieve excellence.
Lastly, I want students to enjoy and appreciate their instrument, music, and music-making; and I know as as a teacher, I am very influential in making this happen. Students develop enjoyment of music by understanding music, experiencing success in music, being exposed to good and varied genres of music, and receiving instruction from a teacher who is enthusiastic and encouraging. It is my goal to provide all of these opportunities for students, and as a result their lives will be enriched as they enjoy their instrument.
My daughter takes guitar from Maria and I didn’t realize how much she’s progressed until we went to a friend’s recital. 8 months with Maria and my child is leaps and bounds ahead of kids who’ve been taking for 2-3 years. It’s really motivating for her to see. Maria has standards which are non-negotiable but she’s patient and truly guides the kids to success. I’m so happy with our choice as her as a teacher.

Maria has been wonderful with our son. Very motivating and goal based. The recitals blow me away year after year. The progress these kids make with her plus the longevity of her students says a lot.
I have taught music for 10 years and believe students should get to play what they want to play! Students are asked to come up with a list of songs and/or artists they would love to play. Through teaching chords, note reading and theory, the song possibilities are endless! I also can help the aspiring singer/mandolin player to be able to both play and sing simultaneously.
Hello there! I'm Rachel C., a bass player and singer on the stage who also enjoys playing and teaching all stringed instruments. I am an adult who has no experience with any type of instrument and was very nervous and intimidated at first. Then I met with Michael, and though there was a ton of information we had to go through, he really made me feel at ease. He has the knowledge, patience, and understanding I was really looking for in a teacher and I'm so happy I found him!

With his flexibility and willingness to accommodate us my daughter learned a lot from him. He was a wonderful teacher and a great person to do business with.

Michael is very energetic and passionate about music. My kids have really enjoyed their time with him and we would recommend him to anyone!
I studied classical guitar in college and continue to incorporate various methods in to my general guitar lessons. Spent quite a bit of time on Fernando Sor and Bach.
I absolutely love teaching music! After over 20 years of teaching, performing, writing, and recording in all styles/genres, it continues to be a great adventure. It is a joy to pass this on to others...especially seeing my students that never touched the instrument going on to be very proficient players.
I take teaching seriously, but definitely try to make it enjoyable for the student. I studied classical guitar in college, but was playing everything from Van Halen to Jazz to Country & Blues before that. Currently, I'd consider myself a flat out musical mutt...enjoying anything and everything. The love of guitar has also expanded to a multitude of instruments that I record, gig, & teach with.
I hold a Masters Degree in Music, am a certified North Carolina Teacher, and have been playing the guitar for the past 15 years. We will figure out at what level you are currently playing within the first lessons and then decide together what you want to focus on. This is YOUR lesson, and I am here to guide you down the path that you choose.

He currently serves as the Albemarle Road Middle School and Crestdale Middle School Director of Strings as well as teaching private lessons in wind and string instruments. He is a member of the National Association for Music Educators, the International Trumpet Guild, as well as the American String Teachers Association.
Jonathan is an amazing teacher. He is teaching both of my kids, one is learning guitar and the other one Violin. He adapts his teaching method to the way that he knows will work with each one of them. They have learned so much, and we enjoy our time in the studio. He is a great musician.

Jonathan is a great teacher! I had my very first violin lesson with him, and he made me feel like I can actually learn how to play this instrument.
Love Antonio's Spanish guitar, he is the only flamenco guitarist I have seen perform in the area! He makes his guitar sing:)

Had the opportunity of listening to Antonio at the Latino Festival in Provo. Brilliant technique and wonderful refreshing music, one of a kind in Utah

Antonio is a great teacher! He is very patience and is always willing to help me improve my guitar skills. He has great passion for music and of course for the guitar. I'm very glad I was able to find Antonio because I have learned guitar concepts in English and Spanish!
"Excellent teacher! He is helping me with tempo and have taught me new ways of playing the guitar. He cares about hands position in the guitar in order to
play the guitar in a comfortable and efficient way. Also, he tells you what you are doing wrong in a very subtle way. You can tell he really enjoys teaching people how to play guitar remembering the basics and showing anyone can play guitar with practice, dedication and passion."
"I pressed the wrong star on my review!!! I meant to press the last start, not the first!!! Alex was a wonderful teacher to our son from middle school al
l the way up to graduation. Because of Alex, our son developed a love for the guitar and plays for fun while in school and had the opportunity to play for worship bands this past summer!!!"
"One satisfied student
I took several guitar lessons with Raymond when I was younger. He is an excellent instructor and has the right amount of patience,
dedication, and knowledge for proper musical education. I enjoyed learning new techniques, practice sessions, the study material, and even homework! I wish I lived closer so I could continue taking classes. Thanks!"
"Very knowledgable, easy to establish rapport, and great teacher with great resources."
"I have been taking lessons in classical style guitar from Julie for about two years. She has patiently brought me through increasingly more difficult tec
hnique by choosing a wide variety of challenging but enjoyable pieces to practice. I am gradually working my way up the fret towards the 5th position. She has helped me with theory, including rhythm, the major and minor scales and chord building. Her empathy is a particular blessing for me because of my poor eyesight and the arthritis in my wrists, hands and fingers.”"
"I was super nervous when I went to my first lesson, but Damien was very reassuring and helpful. He asked a lot of questions to find out where I was at, an
d then from there he started teaching me. So far, I think he's a great teacher and will help me reach my goals."
"Great first lesson. Very personable and engaging. Looking forward to my remaining lessons."
"In Music Theory, the Philosophy of Music, and, of course, guitar, Brad R. is definitely one of the most insightful teachers I have worked with. He has a u
nique way of teaching you quickly and without stress. Highly recommend."
"My son Tyler has been taking classical guitar lessons with Raymond for several months now and we can happily say that we have found the best guitar teache
r for Tyler. Tyler has taken guitar lessons with several instructors before but Raymond's approach is very different. He is very attentive to how Tyler plays and corrects it as necessary. Tyler has improved so much. He even memorizes his music sheets and plays anytime, anywhere I ask him to. We are very happy with the results. Highly recommended Raymond for a classical guitar teacher!"
Learning to play other people's guitar solos is a great way to begin learning to write your own! Guitar teacher Nils B. shares his tips to learning four classic rock solos so you can develop your technique...
An essential part of every musician's development is to imitate those who have already mastered their instrument. After settling on a song, give it a couple of close listens (preferably on headphones or a decent stereo), pick up a good transcription, then learn the rhythm parts, while …
