Needless to say, it was very unprofessional of him, and we intended to end our relationship with him as my son's instructor.
The thing got worse when he proceeded to schedule my son for a weekly reoccurring lesson for the next year. I've had to manually cancel each lesson, at least until Jan 2015.
I would strongly warn you against signing up with Chris if you expect an instructor who is reliable and responsive to your communications. I'm sorry it didn't work out, but the other problem is that this was my son's first experience to music lessons, so it was a bad first experience.

Learning material for a test has little to do with memorization, and lots to do with understanding: Understanding the material, understanding the process, understanding why test stress exists, and most of all, understanding how to prepare.
My name is Larry, and I was born and raised in Chicago and now call the Phoenix, AZ metro area home. I have two Master's Degrees in Education (Higher Ed. and Teaching and Learning with Technology), and am working on another M.A. currently in History. I have a tutoring business of my own, working with excellent education partners like Takelessons.
My tutoring business is geared towards middle, high school, and college students, and my specialization is geared in three arenas:
1) The Humanities: History (U.S., European, Oriental, and World), English, Literature (with a special passion for all things Shakespeare), and Social Studies (including American Government and Political Sci
2) Papers: Research papers (and how to do the research for them), essays, creative writing - everything to do with papers you ever wanted to know.
3) Drama (the Theatre kind of drama, not life drama): Acting, directing, staging, analysis, including the aforementioned Will Shakespeare.
***My Promise to You***
I will treat you like an individual - that means that we'll find out how YOU learn best, and we'll work that way. I don't teach "to the test", I don't teach memorization. I teach by asking and answering questions, as well as providing information.
***My Expectation of You***
That you will come with an open mind, come with questions, come with not just the willingness to learn and have fun, but the expectation to do both.
The reason so many people go screaming into the night when confronted with lessons in things like history, or government, or English for that matter, are all the names and dates to memorize. I don't teach that way. We begin with things you want (or need) to know. From there, we cover how those things affected other things, It's a huge world out there, and how we got here from where we started is a wonderful and complicated trip. History doesn't happen in a vacuum, and we learn who we are by knowing where we come from.
Obviously I won't write your paper for you, but I will show you how and where to start your research (and how to sort it as well). I will also proof-read for grammar and/or organizational errors and show you how to structure it in general terms.
I have acted, I have directed. From the community to professional levels. We will talk about character creation, about staging, about working with your director as well as your fellow actors. We will mostly brainstorm, and you will be able to experiment in vision as well as technique.

I can help you with NYC Gifted and Talented Test, SHSAT, HSPT, ISEE, SSAT, SAT/ACT, College/Graduate Admission tests (e.g. GRE/GMAT, etc) and other certification tests when requested. When the rapport with student and teacher is good, a world of possibilities open!
We will together build a test strategy that is specially adapted to your needs and score targets.
120mins/lesson with 30min increments.
(IMPORTANT: Please do NOT book any lessons without confirming with me if we have a match in schedule. I have other obligations besides tutoring so if you do not have a flexible schedule, I recommend other tutors that will match your budget and schedule.)
I specialize in Test Prep (NYC Gifted & Talented Test, SHSAT, TACHS/HSPT/COOP, SSAT/ISEE, Common Core, Regents, college/graduate admissions tests [i.e. SAT/ACT, GRE/GMAT]) and tutor a number of academic subjects in Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Combinatorics), Statistics and Science (especially Physics) and K-12 English. I am particularly interested in Number Theory, Systems Engineering (Feedback Theory), Electronics (Analog Circuit Design) and Cosmology. In the soci
My interests also include gifted learning and STEM education. For example, I was successful in helping a 5-year old pass the NYC Gifted & Talented Test so he could enroll in any New York City school participating in the program.
I have several years experience working with various people from different backgrounds as an engineer (hardware+software) and as business developer in multinational companies and startups and this exposure has given me deeper and practical insights into personality and intelligence enabling me to adapt my teaching style to different needs and situations. Furthermore, I have learned from experience that there are three best tools for learning: practice, practice and more practice!
Tutoring for yourself or for your son/daughter is both an investment in time and money for a future return so please also plan accordingly. Now, I make sure that I do not totally depend on tutoring for income so I can maintain a certain level of quality. In other words, when there is a match in objective, budget and schedule, I am quite happy to be part of someone's educational journey. I consider it indeed a very special privelege to be able to help a student because it is my experience that effective education can be life-changing. Finally, I am aware that other tutors may be in a better position to meet your existing situation so we have to accept that and move on.
Tutoring Rate (IMPORTANT): I only do in-person tutoring because I believe effective learning is multi-dimensional and personal not flat and distant. My minimum lesson length is 1.5 hours for Academic subjects and 2.0 hours for Test Prep. My rates for children and teens will in principle be at least the same as adults because I actually invest more time and effort since I have to consider the feedback of at least 2 individuals (student+guardian) compared with an adult student. Different arrangements possible on a case-by-case basis. Please see each subject rate for more details.
When I am not tutoring, I am involved in projects related to technology, hospitality and service industries. I also enjoy cooking especially when I can make an ordinary dish into something extra-ordinary by adding that little "extra."

SAT/ACT/GRE/GMAT/SAT II/AP tests in math and science. I stress understanding (geometrically/analytically) rather than memorizing formulas. This ensures my students can derive formulas/solutions even without memorization.
I know firsthand how difficult it is to learn test taking skills whether you are a total newbie, or a budding intermediate, but I have overcame these challenges myself and will guide you to overcome them too. I also have 3 years of tutoring experience, which will surely come in handy!
I enjoy tutoring and helping other overcome problems that I have encountered myself because it enhances my own understanding and makes me happy that my self-studying is helping others. Sometimes, my students even bring up alternative ways of thinking that I have never thought of before!
Aside from academics, I enjoy playing the piano. I also play the occasional volleyball and improv theater.
