I recently graduated with my second masters degree from Teachers College, Columbia University in Music Education. I also hold a Master of Music and Bachelor of Music both in Vocal Performance. I also recently sang for the second time at Carnegie Hall - 9 months pregnant!

Curriculum will vary student to student. We will initially speak about goals, long-term and short-term, and what you hope to achieve. Based on this, I will tailor lesson plans to the needs of each student.

Great Dedicated Instructor!

She first lets the student warm up and asks for short-term and long-term goals. From there develops a plan for the student to follow, that she feels will show the best results. She is always asking how comfortable one is whether with certain exercises, ranges, or songs and if the student is fine with her current curriculum or what the student prefers to work on first. You can tell she has a passion for music as we all do that are looking for lessons, and her goal is to help us accomplish what we want to with our voice to the best of our and her abilities. She also knows music theory really well and provides information, and she has a beautiful voice!

**Joshua is currently performing in the Broadway company of Les Miserables so is only teaching in person in NY and online via Skype or FaceTime.**

As an actor, Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.
Performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., The Laramie Project, and Les Miserables to name a few.
As a director, Joshua directed three sold out productions of Hedwig and the Angry Inch in NC and DC, received rave reviews for his work with Neil LaBute’s Some Girl(s), and just completed production for a series on the making of Oklahoma!. Other
sporadic credits include Duets for the DC Fringe Festival, a number of independent films and countless readings, workshops and concerts as well as the Washington, DC premiere of Madhuri Shekar’s, In Love and Warcraft.
Joshua has worked as a Musical Director for many shows within the NY/NJ/DC tri-state area and coaches a handful of select students. The musical play, Definition of a Housewife, conceived and written by himself and Jeffery Self had a workshop production in the summer of 2006 at Columbia University.
Most recently he appeared in Arena Stage’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, Signature Theatre’s production of Soon and is currently in the Broadway revival of Les Miserables. He is also attached to a new musical (A House of Glass) about Tennessee Williams in which Joshua will be playing the prolific writer.
Joshua was the founding Artistic Director of No Rules Theatre Company for 6 years and sits on the board of the Artists Crossing in NY, NY.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that all singing comes from the same place, technically (Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, etc.). I work more on building a strong foundation from which everything else comes. That includes breath, placement and the stripping away of bad vocal habits that inhibit us from making healthy productive sounds. A strong foundation does usually mean having a stronger sense of your "legit" voice because it takes more work to involve your palate and breath which makes Musical Theatre/Pop seem like a piece of cake. I like to work with dedicated students who are open to challenging themselves and exploring other schools of thought in order to take themselves to the next level.

I have a strong background in musical theatre but believe that it all comes from the same place. Good technique is good technique which stems from more of a "classical" background. Bel canto, if you will. It's like dancing. Dancers who study ballet are much better dancers than those who don't because they have a strong foundation from which to work.

With my actors, I start from building a foundation of a sense of truth which is inherent in all of us. We talk through/explore a number of "approaches", in order to find the individuals process. From there, we begin work on how to approach text (actions, objectives, targets, meanings, etc.)

I only work on a flex schedule with my students, so when booking lessons- rather than selecting a specific day and time for lessons, we schedule each lesson from week to week as we go. He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.

Classical techniques grounded in principals of voice care and bel canto singing. A natural approach is used to find the singer's individual voice. The first part of the lesson will always focus on technique and proper warm up of your voice, then we will move onto repertoire. Repertoire is selected by both the teacher and the student.

About Bridget
I have been a professional voice, music theory and piano teacher for the last ten years, and have loved every minute of it. I am originally from Canada, and went to the University of Windsor to study vocal performance. I was given an opportunity to the study principals of classical singing and musical theater. From there, I began to work as a featured classical soloist and choral singer throughout Canada. I came to New York to continue my studies, and earned a Master of Music degree in Classical Voice from the Manhattan School of Music.

I believe that singing lessons should be a lot of fun. With good technique, my students and I can team up to accomplish anything from singing classical songs and even some opera arias to popular songs and musical theater. It is my goal to help you discover your own personal voice, and build confidence
in your individual gifts. My students have gone on to study voice in college and university, perform in musical theater, sing in rock bands, children and adult choirs and even win a competition or two. I love hearing my students perform, and feel that an opportunity to sing in front of others builds confidence and ability. I take pride in arranging recitals for my students who would like this opportunity.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons with always begin with warm ups and technique. We'll also focus on an important principal topic, such as breath and support, vowel placement or expression. We'll use some exercises that I have already, or perhaps a new one just for your needs (once I get to know your voice) to help you achieve our goals. We'll then work on 1-2 songs. You'll probably have picked one, and I may have picked one. The concept that we worked on in our technique session will be applied directly to the songs you are working on. You can learn so many different things in each song, we may practice your songs, using a different goal in several different lessons.
All of my students get a chance to perform in occasional "vocal class" settings, where you can sing your favorite songs for one another, in a fun, laid back environment. All students are welcome to participate in an annual recital for their family and friends too! Piano lessons are designed to suit your needs. We can work on the basics for classical playing, read chords, jazz improv and more.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have my own music studio set up in my apartment. On teaching days, my living room can be a comfortable waiting room for parents/guardians. You are all most welcome to relax, have a cup of tea or coffee and listen to our lessons. I do ask that you do not sit inside the studio (at least not after the first lesson) as this can be distracting for your child. My studio is equipped with a music stand, upright piano, work sheets for theory, pencils and crayons. I also have a full Broadway and classical music library that students can borrow from, CD/DVD's that can be borrowed, and a New Grove Reference set.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring some music, until we assess the student's needs, then they may buy some books, while I provide the rest. I bring theory worksheets, stickers, pencils etc. If a student would like to sing/play a particular song (Broadway/pop etc) I may have it in my music library.If I do not, the student will need to purchase the music they would like to sing. The student would need a keyboard/piano in their home should I travel. I have a piano in my home.

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. When I first started taking singing lessons, I thought there was no way I could really ever be able to sing. Cindy has helped me to do things that I didn't think possible - sing in key, sing different notes, and relax and enjoy it. I would give her 6 stars if I could!

Cindy is no doubt the ONE when it comes to piano and voice lessons. I have had piano and vocal lessons with other previous instructors in the past, but often felt discouraged, misunderstood and frustrated. I have been taking classical voice lessons for 12 years, and I have been giving singing lessons for 3 years to a wide range of students. I have a Bachelor of Music degree, with a focus in opera, so I am well-versed in many forms of technique and style. We practiced the new cadence for example of the deceptive cadence, the plagal cadence, and the phrygian. we learnt the basic root progression. a standard method of connecting triads with roots a fifth apart is to hold the common tone in the same voice and move all the other parts to the closest possible chord number. We learn about mediant triads s well.some ways using cadence that I can expand my harmonization practice is in general, when tempted to part write or analyze a chord in common-practice music as iii (in major), give the context further thought. i imagine with this knowledge it ill help me to compose a better harmonize song.
We practice together the scale degrees that are designated by Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...), chor ds are similarly designated by Roman numerals (I, II, III). For example, in the key of C major the notes are C,D,E,F,G,A,B and we have designated them as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7. However, when we consider the triad chords in the key of C we have Cmaj, Dm, Em, Fmaj, Gmaj, Am, Bdim. These are designated I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII. When speaking about these chords, for instance in the key of C major, we would call Gmaj the five chord, Dm the two chord,

The easiest way to find an interval's name is to first, count all the pitch names present, including the notes themselves (ignore sharps and flats at this point). Then, find out (had it been missing a flat or sharp) what type of interval it would be, depending on whether it is perfect (a 1,4,5,8) or major (2,6,7). If there are no sharps or flats, you are done. If there are, figure out if the flat or sharp decreases or increases the distance between the two pitches. If it increases the distance, the interval is augmented. If it decreases the distance, and the interval would otherwise be perfect, it is diminished. If it decreases the distance and the interval would otherwise be major, it is min that is what I learnt

Mariana was great! Very professional and able to explain the techniques in a very clear way. When I began, I was very nervous and self-conscious. She was patient and kind and never made me feel embarrassed!

She really knows her stuff and technique. I'd been to a few voice teachers before and they were great singers, but they didn't seem to have to really KNOW the techniques behind singing. Mariana clearly is a wonderful singer and has great training in what she does.

As a former master's student at The Eastman School of Music and a lifelong musician, I've yet to encounter a voice teacher as perceptive, honest, patient, and encouraging as Mr. Tompkins. One of the best pedagogues and technicians I've encountered, his repertoire knowlege and ability to discern what is hindering a singer's progress is quite remarkable. Within an hour of working with him, he was able to fine tune and efficiently improve what was impeding my progress. That 60 minute session was more productive than in an entire semester at conservatory. A world class singer, Mr. Tompkins is as accomplished a voice teacher as he is a performer. Highly recommended.

Christiaan Smith, former Gaston in the Broadway tour of Beauty and the Beast, was kicked out of opera school for singing jazz with Miles Davis' bassist but still went on to sing opera in Pavarotti's home town in Italy and work with opera legend Marilyn Horne and composer Jake Heggie. Now he's in New York studying with Lady Gaga's teacher and singing his own arrangements of Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, and John Mayer at Carnegie Hall while writing and recording pop songs in Nashville and the U.K.

Christiaan was so helpful and knowledgeable about Ableton software. He helped me navigate and load new sounds, as well as work on some original music with such ease. He has an amazing grasp of music composition that strengthens the what one can do with this software. i really gained a lot from my lesson.

I have always enjoyed singing and never had formal training. Christiaan is a patient and encouraging instructor. I learned so much about control and breathing in a short time. He has such extensive knowledge to share.

Hey, my name is Norman and I love to SING! I like to begin every lesson by talking about one way that singing and/or music has had a positive impact on you the student. After that we will warm up extensively (just like stretching before a big run it is necessary to warm up before singing your heart out). After warm ups i'll have you sing the song that we are currently working on, I am comfortable teaching a variety of different styles so if a particular song is calling out to be sung i will do my best to help you sing it to the best of your abilities! I am a strong believer in constructive criticism and positive reinforcement so my students never feel like failures but are always aware of the work they must continue to do. I like to record my students just before the lesson ends so that they can hear their progress as lessons continue!

I am a professional singer/songwriter, recorded and performed my original music all over the word including places like Paris, Copenhagen, NYC, and San Francisco. I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston where I studied vocal performance with a specialty in R&B/Soul music. Before that I was lucky enough to study classical music theory and voice at Rollins College. I myself am a Tenor who can do some baritone stuff and (on a really good day) some light counter-tenor stuff.

I am confident that any student studying with me will show great improvements in their vocal technique and musicality with enough time and practice. I am comfortable teaching anything from contemporary to opera to Broadway style. I've done it all in classroom and professional settings so teaching it is never a problem no matter the level of experience. I like to st
art beginners off slow so I may pick a song for you at first depending on what your interests and goals are but it will just be an easy song to get you comfortable with your own voice.
