Tom is very patient with younger students that get distracted easily. One of my children is very interested in learning Irish folk music and Tom is great about helping him explore his interests in music. I love having lessons in home. It's very convient and allows me to keep my toddler entertained while my other children are doing lessons. Lessons are also affordable. I would definitely recommend Tom!

As a HARP teacher, all of my
students play scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises in
their lessons. I believe having a strong technical base is the foundation for
every part of playing and you can't learn without it. I will set the repertoire
for students according to their technical progress and although I may
take into consideration a student's desires to learn a certain piece, there has
to be time and they have to be ready for it. I have both short term and long
term goals for each student that involve theory, technical ability, and
repertoire: fun, orchestral and solo. Adult students still have to learn
technique, it makes things much more fun and easy six months later, I promise! Beginning students will learn how to read notes, understand basic theory, and technique in a short amount of time, so don't be scared if you have never had a music lesson before.

I require all students make
at least half an hour a day commitment to practice. I teach mostly the Grandjany method of harp technique, however, I also use Salzedo and Renie methods
at times to fit a particular students' build and unique physical attributes as well as what the piece requires. I
have studied all techniques throughout my education and I find them all
beneficial for different reasons. I do, however, believe everyone is built
differently and the technique should help the harpist play and not hinder them
from achieving their goals. Everyone learns at a different speed, but as a
brand new musician, after six months practicing regularly, you should be able
to read music fluently, understand basic theory concepts, be able to play with
both hands and four fingers on each hand, play all of the basic scales and
arpeggios musically and be able to play at least one piece memorized.
Curriculum is based on the student's technical ability and issues and is
individually created – if you learn slower than someone else, don’t worry about
your pace. In the end, lessons are about you personally and not someone else.

As a PIANO teacher, I want students to learn about music and not just the piano. Students will learn basic music theory and basic scales as a part of their lessons. They will also occasionally choose a song of their choosing to work on chords. I do promote note reading and theory, so I am not the right teacher for students who don't want to invest time in learning the basics. These basics are the building blocks of all music and can be used for any instrument the student chooses to learn in the future.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have harps and a piano at my studio, so you do not need to bring your harp to lessons. If you don't own a harp, you can rent one for around $45/month from several sources.

*** Specialties ***
HARP - Grandjany Technique with an incorporation of Salzedo and French school depending on the player's body type and technical difficulties. I make use of the ABRSM as well as local, national, and international competitions depending on the student's level of commitment.

PIANO - I teach basic piano for fun through an Intermediate level. Although some students choose to take CM and ABRSM exams, I do not push them. I want students to enjoy piano and music lessons.

As a music teacher of over 10 years I take a fun but structured approach to learning the harp. I've taught all ages and I individually work with each student to help them learn the music that they want to and reach the goals that they set for themselves. I also have a large emphasis on hand position and help my students have the very best technique so they can play their very best. We will typically start with exercises and technique and then move to music. I will then send written individual feedback after the lesson to help remind the student of what we are working on. I hope to have the chance to share my love of music with you!

About Jill
I am a harpist, pianist, arranger, composer, performer and lover of music. With over 12 years of experience teaching both piano and harp lessons. Although I graduated from Brigham Young University in Idaho with a Bachelors in visual communication, I have continued to stretch my skills as musician and teacher.

I perform frequently and love sharing my passion for the harp and piano through teaching so others can also experience having these beautiful instruments in their lives.

I teach piano and harp students of all different ages and experience levels, although I have an especially great love for teaching children and youth. I studied classical piano for over 12 years, and classic harp for over 11 years. A huge part of my music education was focused on theory and as a result I have a great love of having a strong foundation in musica
l theory.

I strive to help my students develop a love music that can last throughout their entire life while still learning proper technique and theory. I try to help students set individual goals and then structure lessons to help these students reach each of their dreams.

Practicing can be hard for any student, but playing music you enjoy can help you stick with it. To inspire my students, I find or arrange music they both enjoy and that will help them progress. I've found that this not only motivates students but also adds an extra fun aspect to our lessons and practices.

My passion is sharing my love of music with those around me. Schedule your first harp lesson with me today!

I taught 8 years when I was living in Belgium and I always loved sharing my knowledge about the harp and helped my student with their goals.

About Louise
French-born harpist Louise Ollivier is emerging as an engaging performer in both her native France and New York City. She has won awards and has participated in several international competitions (Rovere d'Oro, Concours Francais de la Harpe, USA International Harp Competition). In past seasons, she has performed at the Lincoln Center in New York and was invited to play with the United Nations Orchestra. Louise has also performed across Europe (France, Germany, Netherlands, Germany, UK, Italy, Belgium, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain) with the Brussel Chamber Orchestra, National Police Orchestra of France or at the Royal Opera of Liege and on Josh Groban’s live tour in 2016. From 2011-2015 she was invited as the principal harpist to the Aurora Festival in Sweden, and during the 2014-15 season she performed in New Delhi through the Neemrana Musi

An enthusiastic collaborator, Louise has worked with multiple artists across a number of disciplines, including Jialba (Belgian visual artist), Louise Ros (Belgian photographer), Rafael Leloup, and Romain Zante (both LA-based Belgian composers). I make sure to create a custom lesson plan, tailored to each individual student's level and learning style. I share my knowledge from my own education at The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music, as well as practical advice from on the job, musician experience in orchestras, chamber music settings, recitals, competitions, and other collaborative projects.

About Margaret
Hi Friends,

Thanks for viewing my TakeLessons profile! I am a professional harpist with a Bachelor of Harp degree from Juilliard, and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Since finishing school, I've worked as a harpist performing a range of genres in New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Washington DC, New Jersey, Seattle, New Hampshire, and now, Texas. My training is in classical harp, but I spend a lot of time playing recording jazz and pop music as well. Being a versatile musician is important both for musical growth and development, and also for diverse career opportunities.

Teaching harp lessons is one of my favorite things; it's extremely rewarding to notice expansion in a student's skillset and practical knowledge. My harp teachers at Juilliard and Yale are very important to me, and I frequently relay th
eir sentiments to my students. I always try to be aware of my students' interests and other activities/obligations, and tailor a lesson plan based on how much time they are able to devote to practicing, what repertoire would develop their technique and musical abilities, and, of course, what repertoire interests and appeals to them. I also discuss music theory and tips and tricks for orchestra, chamber music, and other performance opportunities at length in my lessons. I'm comfortable with concert, competition, and audition prep, and apply my experience in all of those areas.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. I look forward to speaking with you!

I took harp lessons with Margaret for 3 years and would have continued if I hadn't relocated to a different city. Margaret helped me drastically improve my technique with etudes and advice. She is great at explaining what changes need to be made to achieve a more accurate technique, and her musical suggestions really changed the way I think about preparing pieces and took my performance skills to a new level. She's honest, clear, and really fun to work with. I always looked forward to our lessons because she has a way of making even tricky, difficult pieces fun to work on.
