Konnichiwa!!!! My name is Mari Mizutani and I am a native Japanese speaker fluent in both English and Japanese. I grew up in the States but speak Japanese regularly with my parents and Japanese friends.
Are you going to japan and want to learn some key phrases? I can help!
Do you need someone to practice Japanese with? I can help!!
My lessons are in 30 minute increments.
Let’s start learning!!

About Mari
Welcome to my music studio!

This will be a fun, incredible way to start or continue your music instruction. I have been a private violin and piano instructor since 1991. I took a break in 2005 while my kids were little. Now that they have grown up a bit, I am so excited to come back to this!

My teaching methods involve reading notes. I do not teach the Suzuki method. If that is what you are looking for, I can refer you to some wonderful local teachers. I will have 2 recitals a year and some workshops and clinics in between.

Thank you and I am looking forward to taking this musical journey with you!

Recitals and Performances: I will schedule 2 recitals a year and I highly encourage students to attend and participate in both.

Practice: A student's progress is 100% based on the practicing that takes place at home. I recom
mend having a scheduled time everyday that is dedicated to uninterrupted practice time. For 30 minute lessons, I recommend a 30 minute practice.

Books and Materials: On the first day, I will have books that you can buy from me. Please bring books to every lesson.
PIANO STUDENTS: It is crucial that you have a working piano at home. While I understand it's a huge commitment to buy/rent a piano, playing on a keyboard is not the same. The exception is if you have a full size keyboard (88 keys), with touch sensitivity.
VIOLIN/VIOLA STUDENTS: PLEASE consult me before you buy/rent a violin. There are several places that you can buy a violin 'package' for $99. For not much more, you can have a violin that is higher quality and will sound better. Remember, you only sound as good as your instrument! I know several reputable places that rent instruments that are of high quality.

Summer Schedule: I will try and be as accommodating as possible for the summer. If you know already which days you will be gone, let me know and we can work it into the calendar.

My approach to teaching lessons has always been with a gentle, calm demeanor. However, that said, I do want my students to excel and feel challenged. If at any time, you have concerns, please don't hesitate to talk to me about them. I want this to be a fun experience and the only way to ensure that is to make sure that the port of communication is always open. Thank you and let's get started!

I absolutely loved learning from Mari for my piano lessons! As an adult learner, I felt like my brain doesn't work as fast as it used to, so learning a new instrument was difficult, but Mari completely caters each lesson to my learning speed and maximized my abilities. She takes into accounts the areas and types of music I wanted to learn and helped me to achieve being able to play that type of music. I also loved and appreciated that she works around my busy work schedule and accommodating lessons when plans change throughout the week. I would highly recommend Mari as a music teacher to anyone interested in learning a new instrument at all ages!

I'm a native Japanese speaker here to help you learn Japanese. My aim is to help you gain not only the Japanese skills but also the cultural awareness to help you navigate in situations in which you need to use Japanese. I approach my lessons with customization that is only possible in private teaching. I teach students of all ages who are able to take at least 6 months of my lessons. I look forward to making contribution to your learning.

About Taro
こんにちは

My name is Taro, and I am a Japanese teacher from Kobe, Japan.

I first started teaching Japanese when the mother of a high school student reached out to me to help him learn Japanese. I have been teaching the language since then to men and women of all ages.

Japanese is a language that emphasizes formality which is reflected in Japanese culture that values civility and order. Learning Japanese properly enables you to understand how Japanese people think and act, which helps you to enjoy Japan fully when you visit the country.

My job is to help you learn the language the right way so you can get to the next level. In order to do so, I use curated material and utilize technology to maximize your learning process.

I look forward to working with you, and I am excited to help you realize your goal.

Prior to the beginning of my lessons with Taro, I had little to no knowledge of Japanese, so I took weekly lessons for Japanese lessons for a little over half a year, and I am proud to say that I feel confident in my understanding of the basics in Japanese grammar and knowledge. He was excellent in adapting to my learning goals and ensuring that I received what I expected from every lesson. I was able to retain much of what we went over because the lessons effectively covered material that I can relate to my personal life. Taro is definitely my favorite teacher since he goes the extra mile and genuinely cares about his students as well as their goals. If you're thinking of beginning lessons and aren't sure where to start, Taro is the perfect teacher for guiding you to identify and reach your learning goals, whether you're a beginner or have moderate experience with Japanese!

I have been taking Japanese lessons with Taro Sensei for about 5 months. He is a very patient and organized instructor. He designs the teaching material based on my specific level and goals. I enjoy the fun conversation with him during every lesson. My Japanese skill has improved gradually as time goes by. Thank you Taro Sensei.

Hi, I’ve taught Japanese since 2002 and I’ve always enjoyed teaching and interacting with students. I have taught American adults and college students for over 5 years now. Teaching Japanese to American military personnel and spouses who were stationed in Japan was the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. They truly needed the language skills to live in Japan, and they really appreciated that they were able to learn survival Japanese that’s instantly useful out in town.

I grew up in Japan and came to US to go to college. Since I was a college student, I taught Japanese to middle and high school students during summer in Japan. I have a Master of Education in TESL. Yes, I used to teach English more vigorously, but I found teaching Japanese more rewarding. I teach all levels including those who are starting out and also want to improve their fluency and understand the culture and history!
I’m looking forward to working with whoever is interested in my language :) Thank you!!

About Ai
I started my teaching career when I was a college student. In Japan, I taught both English and Japanese to middle and high school students at a private academy. I have also taught Japanese to adults especially the spouses stationed in Japan and also at community college. I have the Master of Education in TESL; therefore, I’ve taught English more vigorously, but know what it takes to be successful at second language acquisition. I really find it rewarding to teach those who are interested in Japanese language and culture.

I like to get to know your learning styles and what motivates you. I will cater to your needs and make your own lesson plan just for you.

I love teaching and discovering my own culture through the eyes of the students. I love to meet new people and just love the people who want to learn a foreign language. It gives y
ou an opportunity to widen your view of the world!

I’ve also played the piano since I was 3 years old and have the Yamaha certification; therefore, I teach piano too. I also love to play!!

I wanted to find someone who was knowledgeable to help lead me in the right direction in my Korean studies. I've been studying Korean at home and Herena has been incredibly helpful as a tutor! I went in knowing a tiny bit of very basic Hangul. Herena worked with me and with the book I had already purchased for studies. She is knowledgeable and personable. As a native Korean speaker I trust that she knows what she is talking about. Herena is also very friendly and relatable. Super cool that she uses the topics I am interested in for the lessons and offering cultural and historical facts as well. I've learned so much with her, you can't go wrong if she's your tutor!

We can focus on all four skills; speaking, listening, reading, and writing, but if a student would like to focus on only speaking, we can certainly do that as well. We also talk about cultural aspects of Japan and cover the vocabularies related to the cultural aspects.

About Emi
Hello, my name is Emi. I was born in Nagano prefecture and raised in Saitama prefecture. After graduating from college in Tokyo, I moved to the U.S. and have been teaching Japanese at public middle schools as well as colleges for almost 30 years. My hobbies are practicing musical instruments and traveling. Especially, I love drumming with Japanese Taiko drum and Brazilian Samba drum. Additionally, I have been organizing summer trips and taking people who are interested in Japanese culture to Tokyo and other cities during summer for the last 10 years.

I have done the background check through AISD public school system, as well as updating through Sently Link in June 2019.

Sensei seems to really enjoy teaching. As both a native speaker and a longtime resident of the US, she is able to bridge the cultures in a way that many instructors would not be able to. I have been studying with her for over six months - both in a private and college setting - and I feel that I would be hard pressed to find a better teacher. In a college setting, she is very strict and covers a lot of material in a short period of time, and those who take her courses must be prepared to expend significant time and energy for success, but those who can keep up are well equipped to continue their studies with pretty much any other teacher or course.

Sensei Emi was patient, kind, and very thorough with her teaching. I started from knowing absolutely nothing about Japanese language or culture and now, having completed just 5 hours of lessons with her, I feel I have a solid foundation to build upon. Within our 5 hours we covered numbers, greetings, and almost all of the 46 basic hiragana. She was born and raised in Japan so it was lovely hearing about the culture and society from stories she lived through first hand. As I continue my education in Japanese I hope to return to her and continue to learn more. I highly recommend her as a teacher to anyone learning Japanese at any level.

Emi is the second private tutor that my company has had and she by far has been the best, hands-down. She is professional and experienced but she is also flexible with scheduling which is a necessity for business professionals who travel quite a bit for work.
The homework is not strenuous but is focused and important for success in her lessons. She also teaches at a nice pace but also is willing to work with you if you feel that you are falling behind. You can absolutely tell that Emi cares about her students and their progression with the language no matter their age and experience.

I love photography, crafts, watching anime, and traveling. I'd love to talk to you about all kinds of things. :)

Kyoko has been an amazing Japanese teacher to my 8 year old daughter. Her lessons are customized to what the student wants or needs to learn. Most importantly she listens and gives great advice for improving your skills. Kyoko is a great teacher who truly cares about your progress. I’ve tried other teachers and my daughter and me like Kyoko the best by far. So much so, she has been my daughter’s teacher for over 3 years.

Kyoko is extremely knowledgeable and is authentically Japanese born and raised in Japan but has lived in the U.S. for awhile now and is natively fluent in English for parents who may not understand Japanese. Her communication and timeliness are amazing! I’d recommend her to any of my friends and family - and have.

I started teaching myself Japanese when I was 11 years old. From there, my high school formally held Japanese courses through the local college. I took those classes and courses for 6 years and I continue my Japanese studies in college. I also spent 3 months Japan's Ehime Prefecture as an exchange student, and another 2 weeks spent in Shizuoka as a Sister City representative from Kelso, Washington. I spend too much time around children of all ages and have been conditioned to have super high patience and tolerance. I hope to offer myself as a resource that I never had when I first started my language journey as well as a friend to all of my students.

About Joy
Hello, my name is Joy. I grew up in Santa Cruz, California and spent 10 years in Kelso, Washington. After suffering in the cold, dark, rainy, cold, and rainy North West, I retreated back to my sunny home town Santa Cruz where I've been happily residing for the last two years. In my free time, I enjoy dancing, yoga, cake decorating, spending time with my family, and studying Japanese. I hope to impact lives and change the world! I believe that everyone has a purpose in life and no one is too insignificant to matter.

Having studied Japanese for years using several resources, I have come to understand and master these resources, and I am able to present the information thereof to assist newer Japanese learners. I understand the struggles of self-study and having to learn grammar and vocabulary that is very different from English. If you allow me to help you, and you put in the effort, I am sure that your Japanese level will improve tremendously! がんばりましょうね!

About Nathaniel
Hi! My name is Nathaniel Gipson, and I am a Japanese language tutor. I began tutoring informally in March 2017, and in 2018, I was recommended by the Japanese faculty at Harold Washington College to tutor in the Japanese classes. Most of my experience deals with tutoring college students in beginner Japanese classes, as well as helping people with their Japanese studies in other settings. I am currently an organizer for a Chicago Japanese conversation group ("Chicago Speaks Japanese!"), and I work with many beginner- and intermediate-level Japanese learners, as well as native Japanese speakers.

I would describe myself as energetic, outgoing, and passionate, and I absolutely LOVE to help people with Japanese! There are so many interesting nuances and parts of the Japanese that make it unique and fun, and I enjoy sharing these with others.
Especially having learned Japanese, I feel very confident in explaining Japanese language concepts to others, and many native speakers have commended me on my ability to do so. I hope that as you improve in your Japanese ability, we can have conversations in Japanese! Thanks!!
