I have had a wonderful organ teacher, Shoko, for quite a few months. She is very patient, extremely pleasant and teaches very well. I learned quite a bit from her since I knew no organ playing at all at onset.

If there is one thing music education lacks these days, it is music theory. Too often young violinists are made into automatons with the misuse of the Suzuki method. I always ensure my students understand what they are reading on the page of sheet music, with all questions answered. My goal is to teach a man how to fish. I.e. Show the student how to read sheet music so that they can pick up any sheet of music and just play it.

About Antoinette
Finding an schooled violinist and finding a good violin teacher are two very different things. When I see other teacher's profiles, they boast of the years of training they had. Anyone can learn and play, but it takes a love of teaching to really make a difference in someone's life.

PATIENCE
When you have a love of teaching, you have a seemingly endless resource of patience. This is because what the student sees as "patient" is really just a small step in the educational process. It is a fraction of time just before a correction. When you have something new to teach, whether it is a new technique, or a correction of something being done improperly, and you know exactly how to break it down so it is understandable and accomplishable, you know it is always a short matter of time before the student gets it. And by short, I mean a matter
of seconds, or minutes.

FRIENDLINESS
I respect others and what they feel and have to say. I treat others as I would want to be treated and lessons are always a pleasure to my students, because it is a pleasure for me to teach them.

EXPERIENCE
I have been playing for over 26 years. I have played with a multitude of local orchestras and bands and have done countless studio recording sessions and live shows. All of this experience comes through in my teaching either directly (when it comes time for you to perform) or incrementally.

When you are learning, there is a vast sea of information. Not all of that knowledge is equal in importance. It is incredibly important to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not very important. All of my real-life experience, and continuing experience reveals itself in the form of ensuring my students know what is truly important.

Lest you get the idea that I am a wishy-washy, undemanding teacher, I can assure you this is not the case. Lessons are fun, but that is because they are productive. You will walk away being able to do something, and that requires hard work, and practice.

WHAT I EXPECT FROM MY STUDENTS

And a winning attitude.

I can even work with you if you don't have a winning attitude, but it makes it more fun when you do!

HOW FAST CAN I EXPECT RESULTS?
Some students who were musicians previously leave the first lesson being able to play their first song. Most students however, who have never played an instrument before, can expect to be comfortable bowing (a huge part of the process - half the sound!) within the first few weeks, and will then move on to learning songs. We will be learning sheet music as well, on a very, very easy gradient. After the first couple months, I expect you to tell me which song it is you might like to learn most so that we can start working on it.

Antoinette is, by far, the best music instructor that I have ever hired. Music has always been a part of my life. As a child, I took piano lessons for years and continued on and off through college. As a complete novice to the violin, I was nervous to begin such a challenging instrument as an adult hobby. Antoinette is encouraging, intelligent and incredibly skilled. Her calm demeanor and patience is vital to one's success. She focuses on the building blocks to a successful technique with ease. I am incredibly grateful to Antoinette for reminding me of how enjoyable music can be. I look forward to our weekly sessions around my busy work schedule. Her location is conveniently located within walking distance from the subway in NYC.

I took violin lessons for a year with an instructor I found through a different organization (not TakeLessons)--and I learned more in one hour with Antoinette than I learned in 30 lessons with that other teacher. In just one lesson, I can see that Antoinette is friendly, smart, encouraging, knows her stuff--and knows how to teach (which not every good player can do). I'm an adult, but I bet she'd be just as great with a student of any age.

Amazing instructor! I am new to singing so I was quite embarrassed to get started but he made me very comfortable and gave me confidence. He knows what he is doing and I can see steady growth with each week that goes by. On top of all this I had to change the time of a lesson one time with little notice. He was very understanding and allowed me to do so. Great guy, and even better instructor! Definitely recommend!

Mr. Aaron is an amazing teacher. He is knowledgeable, very patient and very helpful. After taking several lessons with Mr. Aaron, I realized playing piano is a much more delicate form of art than I had thought.

In Mr. Aaron's class, piano playing, understanding of music, music theory and the culture of music are nicely combined. I've learned playing piano before, but have never been so happy and learning so much.

20 years I've been including music theory in my lessons and many times giving private lessons just on the subject to Singers, Percussionists and instrumentalists outside of guitar. I have some fantastic sight singing books but I start with your memory, the melodies that have touched you. We explore your personal contact with music to find that you actually know the intervals, the building blocks of music. My understanding of chord function and harmonic colour gets clearly categorized and explained for the student so she/he can use for her/his self to develop a better ear and the right tools to analyze how any song works.

Billy N. has played Jazz, Brazilian and Classical music in the NYC area for the last 20 years. He has actively taught both finger-style and pick guitar for the last 20 years. He was on staff at the American Institute of Guitar for 11 years. His book on Brazilian Guitar is published by Alfred Music and currently available. Most Recently his groups have been performing at the famed Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. He also specializes in solo guitar and can double on percussion (Pandeiro) and Cavaquinho. Billy really knows his stuff; the analysis of time at the beginning is superb: something I now use in my teaching. This is definitely for intermediate and higher guitarists, but the pieces are worth the effort to get right, and the accompanying CD shows you what you are aiming for. This is as good as my other Brazilian guitar book (by Nelson Faria) and much more compact and easier to follow. Highly recommended!

This book is essential homework for students of Brazilian guitar. It is one of the best resources out there, along with Nelson Faria's "The Brazilian Guitar Book." The original etudes are not only instructional, but are nice pieces in their own right. An excellent value.

*** Lesson Details ***
I've taught all levels over 20 years both in NYC and Brazil. I work with the material that the student wants and also through recordings and charts introduce much music that the student might have been unfamiliar with. My lessons are catered to the individual. There is no obstacle anyone has that is too great to work through. My approach to rhythmic training has helped many. I have simple way of breaking down the guitar fingerboard which can used as a guide to learn harmony. I'll get you into the horizontal aspects of guitar, traveling across the neck, making music across one string as well, mastering the guitar in a small fret range - " vertical position playing".

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have guitar for the student, either electric or nylon. Cavaquinho students bring their instrument. First time students must bring their instrument so I can see what they are playing on.

I have been taking lessons with Billy since January 2015. I am a total beginner and I really think I have made the best choice ever to pick him as my teacher. Billy is an experienced guitar teacher and a professional player that knows great techniques for beginners. He has been teaching me basics of guitar in a smart way, and at each lesson I feel I learn something new and at the same time I can clearly see how much progress I have made since our first lesson. He has also been teaching me how to read music and tabs which proofed to be extremely useful every time I want to learn a new song by myself. Highly recommended!

I cannot recommend Billy enough. I studied jazz improvisation with Billy for three years, and later returned to study Brazilian guitar and Piedmont-style finger picking with him. I had been playing for more than twenty years when I started studying with him and he not only helped me improve my playing technically and creatively (on electric and nylon stringed guitars) but also expanded my knowledge of theory and helped me develop new approaches to composing and arranging. I am still working with the material he gave me and take lessons from him whenever my schedule allows.

I took Brazilian guitar lessons from Billy for several years. His method focuses on absorbing the many rhythms of Brazil and translating them from percussion instruments to the guitar. Much of his effort is devoted on achieving the elusive Brazilian swing, which non Brazilians need to learn. Billy is excellent in breaking down the rhythms and explaining them. He even has a book out on his method. He covers various Brazilian genres: choro, bossa nova, samba, baiao and more.
Billy also is an accomplished jazz, classical and flamenco guitarist with a thorough understanding of harmony and improvisation. He is very patient and has years of teaching and performance experience. You will be lucky to study with him!

It's been quite a journey in trying to find an accordion teacher and a place that rents accordions. Anyway, I found both. I found Ivan through this website and I have to say that he is great! He always gets back to me via email and he is very supportive and informative in our lessons. I think he has the positive attitude and knowledge that is crucial to being a good music teacher. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him.

I am a Brooklyn boy whose life has revolved around music from the start. First I sang. I still sing. As a child I taught myself the recorder, accordion, guitar & piano. I performed on all except the accordion. I attended a Music & Art HS focusing on flute & piano. I have a BA, MM & in 2004 was awarded a Doctorate in Flute Performance from the University of Washington, Seattle. Currently, I study piano with Edna Golandsky, the founder of The Golandsky Institute. She teaches the Taubman Technique developed by her teacher, Dorothy Taubman. Tony has been my son's flute teacher since February. He treats children with respect and honesty, which is transpatent. He inspires them with his own beautiful sound on flute or piano while playing duets, but doesn't overly challenge or intimidate them.
We're all happy with the progress we hear and even more pleased that daily practice, though still requiring some parental support, continues to be pleasant and comfortable for my son.
We teuly appreciate Tony's humor as well as his warmth. We're so fortunate to have found him.

I've been taking flute lessons with Tony since I was 7 years old. Seventeen years later, I can say with certainty that he's the reason I love and appreciate classical music. I came to him having started on the recorder, so he placed me in a chamber music group where he wrote individual parts for all of us, catered to ability level. Over the years, he's introduced me to composers I'd never heard of (Kuhlau remains my favorite composer of flute duets), given me amazing performance opportunities from a young age, and become a mentor to me. He's truly gifted with kids -- youngsters can tell when an adult actually respects them as whole individuals. My proudest moment was performing a flute duet with him at 17 years old at the spring concert at the Brooklyn Conservatory. He meets you where you are, and provides the perfect balance of structure and freedom for his students. Even when I knew I wouldn't pursue music professionally, he made learning fun, engaging, and inspiring.
