My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. During my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar cla
sses in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations. It's really important to know though that everyone makes their own experience. The process of learning music involves you learning as much about your own mind and body as it does any external concepts, so please keep in mind only you can move yourself forward.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have opportunities to perform for friends and family at my studio every few months. Adult students also occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

Jesse has given directions on how to successfully become a better musician. His approach and explanation on musical theories was much more understandable than what I was previously reading. Overall, I found the lessons to be very usefull.

The main focus is on technique (bowing, fingerings) while covering any classical repertoire. I can also cover jazz, rock/pop if the student wishes.

About Nathan
I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book appropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

This is the first lesson I got to listen to of my son working with Nathan. Usually I'm not home from work. I am really impressed with how much he was able to help my son improve so quickly. I wish we had started this much sooner.

My classes are very flexible when it comes to what the student wants. I can go from just teaching very basic bass playing to advanced harmonic concepts and jazz improvisation. On the first class, I give the student the choice of controlling our lessons materials about what they want to learn. Or the student can choose to let me control our classes, in which I will bring my own materials and ideas in which we should work and will go through the whole academic process of learning music.

About Marcelo
Established New York musician. Berklee College of Music Graduate. Have been teaching for many years and know that each student has their own mindset and we need to work around each person`s goals and interests. I teach mainly pop, rock, blues, jazz, classical, funk, RnB. All ages and levels are welcome.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are very relaxed and we will focus on ways to practice and getting the student to learn what he/she wants. Some people just want to come and learn a few tunes, some want to really learn the instrument and practice all the time. It all depends on the individual and I`m more than ready to adapt for each one of my students with the methods I have.
On our first class we will spend some time discussing what are the goals of the student and I will formulate a good plan so we can reach those goals in no time
.
I usually have 3 main paths that the student can choose.
1st - Learn the instrument enough so you can play your favorite songs and have fun with friends.
2nd(most requested) - Learn the instrument from scratch. Study technique, repertoire, a little of reading and music theory and learn how to improvise. This will allow the person to have their own tools to study on their own after attending classes with me.
3rd - Usually people who have been playing before like this one. We will go deep in music theory, ear training, reading, improvising and technique. Always leaning challenging tunes that will develop the student skills. This one allows the student to follow a professional path on the future, or maybe go into a music college.

*Location
Classes can take place at my studio or at your own location with an extra fee for transportation.

*Under 18 students
For children under 18 parents are more than welcome to stay for the classes, tell me if there is any specific goal you are looking for or talk about any subject that you might want.

*AUDITION PREP
I also help people to prepare for auditions. For this subject, I will tell you how to get ready for an audition. If you are trying to get in a college I have many contacts around the country and know how most auditions work and can help you with any question there might be. For auditions for orchestras or band we can work on repertoire and behavior to get you ready and all set to get accepted.

My goal as a teacher is to give you the facility to express yourself through music. The key parts to developing this facility are:

1. theory -- if you know your theory, you know the best way to express your idea without having to think about it
2. technique -- the last thing you want is for your technique to hinder your ability to express your idea. Having good technique lets your ideas flow naturally

When you take lessons with me, you get out of it what you put in. Your job as student is to be honest with what you expect to achieve and my job as teacher is to give you the tools to achieve it

About David
I am a bass player first, not a guitarist who also teaches bass. Students will learn technique, theory and groove from a teacher who understands that as bass players, we are in a unique position. Since bass is both a harmony and rhythm instrument we have the opportunity to develop into leaders in a way other instrumentalists don't. I will encourage students interested in exploring this aspect of their instrument

I have a degree in jazz performance from The Ohio State University and have played in numerous rock, jazz and off-broadway bands over the last 20 years. Now playing is something I do primarily for fun and my #1 goal is always that my students have as much fun playing as I do

David went over basic music theory and rhythm with me, and corrected some technique issues. He explained things clearly and when we put some of it into practice in the final minutes I saw instant results. Absolutely excited to do my homework and for my next lesson.

As a beginning, self-taught bass player of four months, I wanted to find a teacher who could analyze and critique my playing. I scheduled five lessons with David over a time period of three months. David was instrumental in analyzing and critiquing bad techniques and habits I acquired. He very thoroughly emphasized proper fretting technique and finger positioning; exercises were given that helped me obtain full tonal quality and efficient fretboard navigation skills. We also reviewed basic theory, scale modes, rhythmic weight, pentatonics and arpeggios; seminal knowledge for the beginner.

A technical type player, David has excellent playing skills as well as a comprehensive knowledge of theory and its practical application. He is a good listener and showed a genuine interest in helping me achieve my goals. I definitely can see an improvement in my playing skills....playing more confidently and efficiently.

Highly recommended.......

David has really tailored our lessons for what I was interested in doing. We are working on technique, musicianship and jazz. He was able to assess quickly where I was at with my skill set and pin point ideas and exercises to help me improve. I'm eager to keep on studying with him!

I have been a gigging bassist and teacher for the past 3 years, working with students of any age. Playing in the orchestra and teaching students are two of my greatest passions in life. My goals as a teacher are to help encourage that interest in a productive environment. Finally: I really LOVE MUSIC!!! It's incredible!! It will my sincere and constant pleasure to share this 'intimate aesthetic expression of everything' with you or your student.

Education -
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor's of Music at the Eastman School in Rochester, NY.

In my junior year, I wrote the music, conducted, and acted as musical director for a full-scale musical entitled Get Hooked: A Pirate Musical. Currently, I'm working on a second full-length project, entitled Nuclear Love, that is set to be produced and performed in the spring of 2020.

I also have experience doing rock and jazz gigs on my electric bass. If you or student is also interested in learning these styles, I'd be more than happy to ...

About Owen
Here's a bit about myself:

Since 2016, I've been teaching math to high school and elementary students. I've always loved it. With teaching, I feel that I've grown more patient and more thoughtful in my general life. I recommend that anyone with the means try their hand at teaching. It is a particularly rewarding thing in and of itself.

The summer of 2016, I wrote the music, conducted, and acted as musical director for a full-scale musical entitled Get Hooked: A Pirate Musical. Currently, I'm working on a second full-length project, entitled Nuclear Love, that is set to be produced and performed in the spring of 2020.

I also have experience doing rock and jazz gigs on my electric bass. If you or student is also interested in learning these styles, I'd be more than happy to oblige!

My favorite books are Zen and the Art of Motorc
ycle Maintenance, The Giver, Ishmael, 1984, The Chess Garden, Invisible Man, Labyrinths, and Life of Pi.

My favorite quote is "infinity and beyond." Granted, there is no such thing as 'beyond' - unless you're referring to the power set of infinity. Honestly, I just love infinity. I could talk about the infinite hotel and fractals forever (pun noted and kept).

I've been taking French classes for about 5 years now. If you're interested in having a charming conversation in slightly broken French, je suis ton mec!

There are a few things more inspiring to than helping a student triumphantly arrive at a solution. Or watching them nail a big shift that was giving them trouble the week before. Learning anything comes with struggle, with difficulty, and I've certainly had my share of practice frustration. It's important to understand that such an experience is part of the process. I have no doubt that with the right ethic, the right teacher, and a desire to learn, anything can be achieved.

I’ve taught professionally for over 10 years. All ages and experience levels are welcome! My specialty is orchestral music and/or classical bass. I teach using a new method developed my George Vance that’s based on Suzuki principles/melodies that gets students playing tuneful songs quickly all over the bass. No fear of upper positions! Lessons will address music theory, technique, ear training, reading skills, and how to achieve a big natural/relaxed sound with the bow. My teaching philosophy is that music should be fun and that all people can benefit from learning to play and express themselves through music. My hope is to build a never ending curiosity for information in my students along with proper technique so eventually they become their own best teachers!

About Jonathan
I am currently a section bassist in both the Grand Rapids Symphony and Lansing Symphony Orchestra. I recently completed my fellowship at the New World Symphony Orchestral Training Academy in Miami Beach, FL where I worked regularly with the world’s best conductors (e.g. Michael Tilson-Thomas), soloists, and young musicians. I have a lot of orchestral experience going back to 2006 with groups such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Royal Swedish Opera, San Antonio Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, Southwest Michigan Symphony, and Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra among others. I have toured Italy, Germany, China, Canada and Austria on orchestral tours and have even performed a concerto in Carnegie Hall in NYC!

I have a strong passion for historical performance, studying music of the Renaissan
ce and Baroque period primarily through my taking up of the viola da gamba. I listen to and appreciate all kinds of music though I’d say classical, jazz, bluegrass, funk, and folk are my jam. Please feel free to check out my LinkenIn and website listed below. I look forward to meeting and working with you!
