Joshua graduated from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and Judith Blazer’s 2005/2007 company of the Artist’s Crossing.

A diverse, singing actor, a few of Joshua’s performance credits include roles in The Trojan Women, Godspell, Burn This, Comedy of Errors, Children of Eden, Othello, Show Boat, Sunday in the Park with George, The Chosen, Sweeney Todd..., and The Laramie Project to name a few. He most recently closed the Broadway revival of Les Miserables having moved from Washington, DC to join the company. He can be seen in the upcoming HBO movie about Joe Paterno starring Al Pacino.

He was the co-founder and Artistic Director of the Helen Hayes Award winning theatre company, No Rules Theatre Company, in Washington, DC and Winston-Salem, NC making it the first e
ver dual city theatre company. During his 6 years with NRTC, he produced and often directed several award winning premieres and created outreach programs for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and those that theatre is often unattainable to.

He is very detailed in getting to know what makes you what you are and where you come from. There is an established unconditional comfortability and confidence that he brings when talking to about your history and future goals, and unquestionable intrigue of interest that helps him figure out what it is you want out of a lesson, critique, or and experience.

I have been professionally singing and taking voice lessons since the age of 9! I went through various styles in my love and performance of music, starting with the Beatles, Aretha Franklin and all of Motown, Jazz (Ella Fitzgerald), R&B, and Classical/Opera (starting when I was in high school and attending Interlochen Arts Camp)...

Having received a Bachelor's of Music in Voice (Music Theatre Performance) from NYU, I stayed in NYC after graduation performing in musical theatre and theatre.

In 2009, I decided to apply to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, with the intent to broaden my range of skill and opportunity as a performer, but also with the intention to teach, with the higher degree strengthening this possibility. I began to teach voice lessons to fellow students while at LAMDA. When I returned to NYC, I began to
build my own voice studio in of post-graduate students and adults looking to further develop their vocal practice or begin a vocal practice. I found that in my vocal lessons, I was using physical exercises as for the actor, to incorporate in my private teaching method. I believe in doing, not only watching and observing. This, in conjunction with movement and full-body execution, opens the student vocally and emotionally. I chose to go to LAMDA because the classical training and approach to theatre training in England is extremely physical. They work from the outside in, and I find that the language of the body is universal to students of any intellectual capacity, and I strive to bring this into my approach in any type of teaching format!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach voice lessons to adults and young students who are beginning their vocal training practice, as well as those who are accomplished singers and performers and want to take their singing and performance to the next level! I use my skills as an accomplished vocalist and teacher to empower my students to find their own voice and learn to express a story through song. I enable my students to hone their craft and find their own style of expression through the exploration of music in a multitude of genres and cultures.

WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm
Breath
Voice
Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA
*Each lesson to begin with a brief review of previous. Copies of previous lessons/homework assignments to be distributed at each meeting

When my daughter was younger, she would sing in her room, the shower or anywhere else she felt comfortable. She was very shy but loved to sing. When she was 13 years old, she lost her grandfather. This was devastating to her and the rest of our family. After the loss, she decided she wanted to make singing a part of her life. Not being musically inclined myself, I didn't know where to turn. Lucky for us, we stumbled upon Sharon West! For the next 6 years, Sharon worked with my daughter weekly teaching her so much more than just music. She guided her on all aspects of performance from singing to entertaining her audience. Sharon West was a huge part of our lives and we could never thank her enough. Kyla really knows what she's doing. I regularly go to her for performance help and never fails to provide constructive criticism and great suggestions for character development and script analysis. She also superb at teaching audition techniques! You will definitely feel more comfortable on the stage or in an audition room when you have Kyla as a teacher!

Kyla and I did a play together and she she really helped me with finding my character and getting the most out of my scenes. Her advice and training really paid off, I would recommend anyone looking to build upon their acting chops to take lessons with her!

Every lesson with me begins with a nice physical and vocal warm up. Your body is your instrument so it is imperative that we get those muscles flexible and warm. How we work will be completely dependent on your needs and desires. My goals are your goals. I do work quite specifically with Shakespeare, but will endow you with a plethora of tools. I'm all about finding what will work best for you. Expect to have fun! We are working on PLAYS after all!
