Professor Nick R. (guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, dobro/resonator/slide, lap steel, tenor guitar, baritone resonator, bass, drums, composition) is currently the adjunct professor at Essex College, Jazz clinician for over 19 years via Kupferberg Center (Queens College) and has been on the staff at Great Neck Music Conservatory. Nick has given lectures at Manhattanville College, at Queens College and at schools, nationally.

Nick has played extensively with Malika Zarra, including her Ebony Road CD release with Harvey Wirht, Mamadou Ba, Brahim Frigane and other great world musicians. As a pupil of Pandit Samir Chatterjee, Russo continues to study Indian music, plays harmonium, box tanpura (soon sitar and oud!) and jams with grammy nominated producer/composer/Indian percussionist, Deep Singh (tabla player with Sting) and grammy nominated producer/trumpet player/composer, Frank London on a regular basis.
Russo has also played extensively with ELEW years before, when he was jazz pianist, Eric Lewis and trombonist, Clark Gayton as sideman in various bands, including the James Brown tribute band with the late great, Black Velvet (Charles Bradley) led by Victor Jones.

*** Lesson Details *** With over 20 years teaching experience, Nick is patient with children & adults. He has a creative, unique pedagogy emphasizing hearing through singing, ear-training & natural, organic listening. Nick instills healthy absorption of music while students have fun learning their music, sight reading, internalizing with focus on rhythm and time. As a student, you will get to work on music that you, the student select as well as work on sight-reading, technique, ear-training. We will also work out of method books and use other sources of information.
*** Studio Equipment *** Chairs, music stands, instrument stands, classical foot pedals, classical guitar pillows, guitar amps, guitar, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, drum set. Students usually provide their own instruments but it's possible to borrow an instrument during the lesson at the studio on the first lesson. (free street parking right in front!)
*** Specialties *** Nick's pedagogy emphasizes ear-training, singing, reading and truly hearing the music we are working on. Rather than rote teaching and guitar tablature, he instills natural listening, transcribing, sight-reading and proper technique. Lessons are always enjoyable as Nick observes each student's unique needs and listen's to their song preferences and musical goals. Students have the opportunity to learn pieces and genres they select and they are trained to figure out tunes by ear (ear-training) and transcribe.

This was my first lesson with Nick. He is a very nice guy. He created a calm, relaxed atmosphere in his studio, and he was clear when he gave me particular instructions. His knowledge of music theory in general, and of the five-string banjo in particular, was quite impressive. I would recommend him highly to both a beginner and to anyone (like myself) who is in need of a refresher course. I am very much looking forward to my next lesson.

Nick Russo is a fantastic tutor for kids and adults who would like to learn Ukulele, guitar, banjo or other instruments. He makes ‘learning fun’ he's friendly and cheerful. I don’t have any background in music but, Nick made it easy for me to understand the notes and how it works. I always look forward to every lesson. I Highly recommended Nick to everyone.

I’ve been taking guitar lessons with Nick now for a few months and it’s been a terrific experience — cannot say enough good things. Each lesson builds on the last and Nick tailors them to my ability and musical interests mixing in enough music theory, which makes learning both productive and enjoyable. Most importantly I feel like I’m beginning to understand how music works and not just blindly memorizing patterns or scales. I considered online courses before choosing Nick, but there’s no substitution for one-to-one instruction. Nick’s feedback and instruction are invaluable.
I was a little concerned about trying to pick up guitar in my early 40s, but its been a rewarding experience so far and I’m looking forward to more lessons with Nick.
Mr o. Is the best saxophone teacher I have never meet . He care about me so much . When I just start at jazz , he let me borrow a lot of CD to listen and learn . And that helped me so much . He had only be my teacher for one year , but he teach me so much that I have never thought .
Ear training includes interval recognition and listening for note positions within chord structures. The ear-training is approached as a partnered-learning to the theoretical concepts presented through the repertoire.
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.
I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.
I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.
Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.
For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.
My system of guitar training includes:
* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;
* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.
* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization
*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice; *Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.
NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.
Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.
*** Lesson Details *** My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.
After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.
Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.
NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.
The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.
The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.
For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.
*** Studio Equipment *** I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.
*** Travel Equipment *** I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.
*** Specialties *** Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!
Incorporated into almost any music lesson, a few minutes a day of "warming up the ears" can change the way you both hear and make music. Developing sensitivity to subtle components of sound changes and deepens your relationship with music.

I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.
I am not a singer, but Nancy was able to make me feel at ease and give me instructions to bring a voice out of me. Very personable and professional, she has many different ideas and exercises to allow a voice to develop. I had one other voice teacher who never even had me learn a song. Nancy is a very capable and valuable teacher. I really can’t recommend her enough!

Born on Christmas Day 1980, Kristian R. has been writing songs for over a decade, his first composition coming at the age of 15. Kristian grew up in a small church in Harlem NYC, where he nurtured and developed his talents for singing, song writing, keyboarding, and production.
Over the years Kristian has written over 200 songs, directed numerous choirs, trained countless soloist, and produced for many up
and coming Gospel and R&B acts. Kristian has shared the stage with the likes of Brian McKnight, Carl Thomas, and Mary Mary, and his songs have garnered praise from the legendary Roberta Flack and Ron Grant (Sony A R and host of the world famous Sunday Open Mic Night at the Village Under Ground featured on MTV's Making of the Band). Kristian was also recently featured in the "98.7 Kiss FM presents Gospel Under the Big Top" pre-show for the Universoul Circus, which had a sold out crowd of over 2500 that night. Kristian is also a winner of the 1190 WLIB "Play them or Pray for them" contest.
Kristian is a great instructor! Very patient, encouraging and knowledgeable about singing. I've learned a lot in a very short time and have heard improvements in my voice already. I would definitely recommend Kristian as an instructor.

Kristian is a great teacher. Very professional. He does an assessment of where you are and then helps you to get to where you want to be. The whole time assuring that you are having fun doing so. Concetta is a NYC based violinist, strings specialist and composer. She writes original art songs inspired by natural science, folk tales, poetry and everyday objects and sounds. She released her first solo album entitled Falling in Time in February 2015 on Waterbug Records. She was a visiting composer in residence at TAKT gallery in Berlin both in 2014 and 2016. In 2018 she co-composed a dance composition for the Wendy Osserman Dance Company. Concetta is most known for her collaborative work with poet Cornelius Eady (Kattywompus Press), musical instrument builder Skip La Plante, photographer Vera Comploj and Latin music band Inti and the Moon (Intiluna Records).
Concetta is the musical director of a music education non-profit called "Teacup Music". She holds a masters degree in Music and Music Education at Columbia University and has
received grants from the Rauschenberg Foundation, Department of Cultural Affairs, Brooklyn Arts Council, the Charles Mayer Foundation as well as The Roothbert Fund.
She loves dogs, hiking, cooking and gardening! She tailors her private lessons to individual students goals and needs.

Work on training yourself to be able to hear a singer or instrument and determine what not they are playing and what key it is in. Also learn how to sing or play your instrument in tune with the other instruments you're playing with.
