View Full Profile

I am versed in Chord-melody, pick-and fingerstyle Jazz. I am comfortable teaching most contemporary styles of guitar playing, and the techniques required.

About Bernadette
I am a NYS certified Music teacher who has been teaching in the school system for over 20 years.

I hold both my BM and MA degree in Music Education, and Jazz guitar was my major instrument in college. My focus is to teach techniques, skills and concepts for life-long learning.

I am currently available to teach Guitar, Music Theory and Beginner Piano.

Aside from teaching private guitar and piano lessons and teaching General music and Chorus in school, I perform and accompany singers as a guitarist in churches on Long Island.

For your added security, I've been VIRTUS trained with the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre and fingerprinted with the NYS Education department.

My system of guitar training includes:

* Right hand and Left hand technical exercises geared towards developing coordination and confidence;

*
work in music reading of standard music notation and TAB;

* Fretboard navigation, pick-control and fingerstyle techniques.

* Song repertoire knowledge and memorization

*Solo guitar interpretation of popular songs as well as accompaniment styles appropriate for backing your or another's voice;
*Ear-training and Music theory is incorporated into each lesson.

NYSSMA preparation is available for both Classical and Jazz auditions.

Piano lessons are available with concentration in proper hand mechanics and technique, theory, ear-training and music reading. NYSSMA preparation up through level 4 is available.

*** Lesson Details ***
My guitar lessons follow a structured format. I begin with technical exercises for both the picking/strumming hand and the fretting hand, leading to good sound production. As students learn to achieve well-balanced tones, they learn to apply that to the written page using standard music notation and the TAB system. From single notes, students learn to build harmony, (chords), from 2 notes, to 3, and thereafter, 4. Song repertoire is built from a variety of sources including published method books. Memorization of song repertoire is stressed.

After the student has learned the notes and scales in the first position as well as the associated chords, he/she can learn songs of his/her choosing from the Folk, Pop, Classical and Jazz repertoire that is appropriate to his/her current level.

Piano method books used include the Dozen-A-Day and Hanon technique exercises as well as the Schaum and Michael Aaron method book series'.

NYSSMA training/coaching is available for both piano and guitar with suitable training beginning a least a year before the NYSSMA audition is to take place.

The Guitar student should have a good quality guitar, (steel strings, nylon strings, or steel-string electric) professionally set-up with light-gauged strings (for the beginners), a strap, a music stand, and time and space in the home in order to encourage a daily routine of practice.

The Piano student should have daily access to a piano or keyboard instrument with weighted keys in order to be able to practice lesson material daily.

For young students, a practice chart is given where a student is to mark his/her practice time in order for progress to be made.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a dedicated room in my home that is set up for private practice and teaching. It has an electronic piano, folding chairs, a music stand and guitar amplifiers and cables.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring an acoustic guitar with me to all out-going lessons so that I can play along with the student and demonstrate techniques as necessary. I bring extra blank sheets of music writing paper, fret board diagrams, and study sheets, as well as extra copies of the books I use most frequently. I can purchase books/materials for the student, with the student's or parent/guardian's reimbursement, or the student may purchase materials on their own.

*** Specialties ***
Pick-style and finger-style guitar, both acoustic and electric; music reading, music theory; re-harmonization and arrangement techniques to make a song your own!

I have a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Guitar Performance from SUNY New Paltz, so you might say I know my way around the fret board.
: )

About Andrew
I've been studying music for 10 years now. Having come to music later in life than most, I find that I am more empathetic to the perspective of the beginning student than many teachers. I spent the Summer of 2009 teaching music fundamentals to groups of severely physically and mentally disabled children of all ages. Since then I've completed my Bachelors degree in Music, taught privately and with several established music schools.

To me, music is above all about transformation. Beautiful sound transforms our experience of the environment, and learning an instrument can help students approach life as one big instrument they need to practice to master.
Learning to play an instrument is also an experience of training one’s nervous system to gradually act and respond in new ways, and that kind of persistent, focused
, training is applicable to any new skill.
Last and definitely not least, playing music is fun.

*** Lesson Details ***

I plan my lessons around getting students to enjoy playing music as soon as possible, whether that means learning how to strum a chord rhythmically, playing their favorite song, or how to take a blues solo.
There are steps that have to be climbed to do more complex things and I encourage students to practice a little every day rather than for a long time once or twice a week. Developing a love of music and steady practice habits are more beneficial over the long term than practicing until your limit.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I currently have a living room space where I can teach, but it's small so it might be preferable to travel to you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary I can provide amplification, cables, and a microphone.

*** Specialties ***
Jazz, Folk, Blues, Rock, Hip-hop, Funk, Reggae.

In younger students this often perpetuates enthusiasm and develops taste. I will produce additional references and a resume upon request. I hold student recitals every year and I've had many students perform, as well as write their own music and gain a solid knowledge of beginner music theory. I know the guitar inside and out, and have a huge stylistic range. I can help you learn any song or style you're interested in.

About Mike
I'm Mike, and I'm thrilled to be part of the TakeLessons team. I first picked up the guitar at the age of 5, and have never looked back! I began formal Jazz training in high school and continued studying guitar and composition at Oberlin College and Wesleyan University. After graduating, I played Organ Trio and small combo jazz in LA, studied Brazilian and African percussion, and went to Japan to study Shamisen and Taiko drumming. I've been playing in various groups since arriving in NYC in 2005, and have recently been working on engineering and composing for film.

My strength lies in my versatility - I love music of all kinds. Whether it's Soul, Samba, or Salsa, Rock, Pop or Hip Hop, I am very good at communicating the mechanics of music so that my students not only learn to play, but learn to listen and write. I have a studio space i
n Manhattan as well as a small mixing studio in my Brooklyn apartment, and I'm happy to show students the ins and outs of recording along with theory and guitar technique.

*** Lesson Details ***
Music is fun!!! I strive for all my students to enjoy themselves, to have a great time learning about the world of music.
I use a song-based approach to guitar playing. Armed with just a small vocabulary of chords, you can play hundreds of great songs. My students will determine the course of their lesson plan by selecting songs they want to learn. While maintaining proper technique and effective practice methods, we will learn the fundamentals of the guitar by playing the music that we love. After 6 months, you will know all the basic chords, and the fundamentals of playing a solo. As lessons progress, you also learn song structure and some basic harmonic theory so you can begin creating on your own.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student is expected to provide his or her own guitar.

I teach beginner guitar to children (6 and up)
I also teach adults beginning to intermediate levels.

About Jennifer
I have a Master's degree in music. My purpose as a teacher is to utilize all of my skills and education to realize my students' goals. I strive to inspire students towards musical excellence! I do this with much positive reinforcement, dialogue and critical analysis. With adults and advanced students, I include self-evaluation and discussion with the student so that they can become involved in their own development and musicianship.

*** Lesson Details ***
Tailoring each lesson to the individual needs of my students, I use a multi-faceted approach that includes memory, sight reading, ear-training and theory. This way students quickly build their repertoire and confidence on their instrument. Sing-a-longs train the musical ear, clapping reinforces rhythmic training, and new, exciting music strengthens reading skills. We often pla
y together, or have mini concerts to display the finished product of students' labor and encourage them towards new musical heights!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Yamaha Grand Piano, Acoustic/Electric Guitar, Classical Guitar

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar and my jeep

*** Specialties ***
When teaching piano, because I specialize in classical, I emphasize sight-reading, theory and performance from the very first lesson. As soon as possible, I have student memorize pieces appropriate to their level. I begin each lesson with memory work, move into sight-reading and analysis of the new work, or exercise. This way a student has a multi-faceted approach to music they are learning, and once they have learned it, they are continually adding to their repertoire. I work this way because many students are overwhelmed at the beginning of the learning stage. Examining the theory behind the composition helps them understand it, and approach it with less apprehension. Also, having pieces they can play from memory every week reminds them of the finished product of their labor and encourages them towards the new work.

Jennifer is great with my high-energy seven-year-old. She's very patient and she is able to make him engage. She also takes the skills he's learned in his music class in school, and builds his skills lessons around his abilities. Finally, she gives homework in a notebook that is clear and measurable, so he knows exactly what to do on his own throughout the week.

Guitar is one of my strongest areas as a musician, and a teacher. I have been teaching guitar for almost 10 years, and have been playing since I was 10.

Most of my current private students are guitarists, and I have received positive reviews from almost all of them.

My goal for teaching guitar is to get the student excited about learning their favorite songs. This is the quickest and most enjoyable way to get inspired to improve on the instrument. Once that spark is lit, there is no stopping!

About Tristan
I am a professional orchestra conductor, cellist, guitarist, and educator. I conduct student orchestras in New York City, and throughout Fairfield County, CT.

I have taught many students over the past 5+ years, all of whom have improved, have developed confidence on their instrument, and improved immensely in every possible way.

I am highly organized and attentive, and strive to create a personalized curriculum for each one of my students. I am entirely student focused and do not teach from a template. Every single person requires a slightly different approach.

My main goal as a private teacher is to inspire. My job is not simply to make my students improve. It is to get them to develop the interest and the desire to practice and explore on their own motivation. That is my greatest focus as a teacher.

Classes with Arron have been really helpful. I think if you have classes with him, you're getting a great value. It seems very important to him that I understand what he's been teaching and that we complete the planned amount of work for each lesson.
Not only that, but he has even been kind enough to extend his teaching beyond the virtual classroom by answering questions that I've had between classes through messages. It is so helpful to have someone who knows what he's talking about to answer the tough questions that are too hard to find the answers to with Google.

I really appreciate your teaching. Thank you, teacher Arron.

My goal is to encourage more people to develop a love of music. That means helping them play the music they want to play. It means learning how to make practicing fun. My lessons aren't just about how to play guitar, but also about learning how a guitar works. how they're built, so that as you get better and start being more discerning with what you play on, you know what you're looking at in a shop. My goal is to lay a solid foundation for you to build upon technically and artistically.

About Christopher
I've been playing guitar since I was 12 years old. I've been writing my own music since 2010. I'm a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the arts and have been living in NYC for the past 12 years after college. I am skilled in teaching new students and encouraging a love of music. I currently work with the Rockasorri program which places music teachers in school around nyc, so I can work with children and adults! My lessons are all about mixing the "boring" part of music (scales, exercises, etc.) with the fun part, playing songs you love and learning how you can express yourself with an instrument.

Chris is a wonderful teacher. I had no prior guitar experience and minimal musical education from a few piano lessons many years ago. Chris was able combine practical, yet impactful techniques which had us playing songs together after the first lesson. His adding some basic musical theory to each lesson has allowed me to better understand the guitar and provided additional texture to the entire experience. I highly recommend Chris for any beginner or experienced student.

I found myself listening to music in a completely new way the moment I left my lesson and was able to visualize the music itself more fully. Thank you Ian.
