Students can expect to receive a firm foundation in music & guitar while becoming a better musician every day. It is vital for students to have lessons that specialize in not only guitar but also music theory. My primary goals are to make each student a great guitarist and also a well-rounded musician. I firmly believe that any student at any age can become a successful guitarist when engaged in instruction that is appropriate and motivating.

Typically a lesson begins with a quick warm up to center your focus on guitar, then we move into scales and technique, followed by working on previous repertoire and picking new repertoire. and then concluding with sight-reading.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room with seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I ask my students to purchase any instruments or method books.

My 7 year old son has been taking lessons with Dave for nearly two years. Dave has an incredible amount of patience, and is always coming up with new ways to keep my son interested. Dave's ability to build in interesting facts about the music and composers, his use of technology to enable the lessons, and his general good humor never cease to amaze me. He's a great teacher.

David is a wonderful teacher who makes learning to play music interesting. He seems to focus on his student's progress and lead them in the right direction. I am a current classical guitar student of his and he has helped me to prepare various pieces and scales for my upcoming college audition. I would highly recommend David to anyone who wants to learn to play the guitar as he is very patient and a very skilled guitarist and teacher!

Jan is a fun and dynamic instructor whose patience and attention to the needs of her students has been instrumental in helping my daughter enjoy and thrive in her voice and piano lessons. While some instructors, in our experience, have been excellent musicians but poor teachers, Jan's style and flexibility make her an ideal person for passing on her knowledge to students, so that they in turn develop their own musical talents and shine. Many thanks, Jan, for your gifts!

We practice to perform! Learn to specifically hone in on what you need to do to in your practice to make performing a joy.

About Luke
I majored in music at Berea College, then went on to The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where I completed a Masters degree in guitar performance and served as the graduate assistant to the guitar department.

For the past ten years I have earned a living performing and teaching guitar. I am a certified Suzuki instructor, and I've held teaching positions at Winston Salem State University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, along with at least half a dozen other schools and institutions. I've been featured on other artists' records, and received a grant to release an album of my own songs. I regularly perform in a wide variety of bands and ensembles.

I love to teach, and over the years I have taught hundreds, maybe even thousands of lessons. Having learned something from each and every one
of my students, I am now at a point where I excel at honing in on the individual interests and learning styles of whoever comes to me for help. There are many ways to learn guitar. The best one is the one that engages and inspires you the most. That said, there are also music fundamentals that we all need to know. My joy as a teacher lies in finding a way for you to master the fundamentals while at the same time following your personal bliss and intuition. We plot the course together, combining your curiosity and enthusiasm with my years of experience.

I also love working with kids. While they are having fun jamming, I discretely provide them with the technique and musicianship they'll need to excel in any musical environment, whether it's conservatory study or playing in a great band.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your enthusiasm is the key to your success, so my lessons are tailored to the interests and abilities of each student. That said, my classical background and dedication to effective teaching inform everything I do.

All of my students learn Music Fundamentals:
-Technique (habits of movement)
-Theory (how music works)
-Aural skills (hearing pitches, chords and rhythms clearly)

Many of my students use books. There are hundreds of great books these days, and I will work with students from any book they choose. Listed here are the books I regularly use. They all deliver great results:

-Aaron Shearer "Leaning The Classic Guitar"
-Will Schmidt and Greg Koch "The Hal Leonard Method"
-Joe Pecoraro "Read This First"
-David Oaks "Music Reading For Guitar"
-William Leavitt "A Modern Method For Guitar"
-Mateo Carcassi "Melodic and Progressive Studies, Opus 60"
-Leo Brouwer "Simple Studies"

Many of my students prefer to work without a book, and that is a great option too. These students learn scales, chords and theory and develop a repertoire of songs. I will show you how to play any song you'd like to learn. You can also work on writing your own songs or compositions, or improvising in any context, be it jazz, blues, Indian raga or flamenco.

Singing is also encouraged!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Home studio: music stands, extensive library of all kinds of music, great sound system and ability to stream any song, several guitars, recording equipment, footstools, keyboard and percussion instruments.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I'll bring my guitar and books, accessories as needed.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in versatility. I regularly play gigs doing classical, jazz, blues, rock, pop, and world music. All of these genres have a place in my heart, and I've devoted years to learning to play and teach them well.

I am equally polyamorous when it comes to the various things musicians do. I love to sing pop songs, dissect jazz lines, delve into expressive groupings with classical pieces, drill scales and arpeggios, you name it. Reading, improvising, composing and notating, transcribing and playing by ear, memorization, classical technique, blues technique, bluegrass technique, theoretical analysis... hit me up for any of that, or whatever else interests you.

About Ilona
For my tutoring sessions I use skills that include goal-directedness, I teach how to organize learning in small steps and how to set them up; I always strive to motivate and engage my students to make the learning interesting and fun; I also use self-control skills to teach how to avoid distractions and I use different focusing strategies. I use positive mind set skills to teach how to use failures as a learning opportunities.

I have a Master's Degree (2012) in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and Bachelors in Music Education (2010), both from Florida Atlantic University, as well as degree in violin performance from Poland.
I studied piano in Poland for 10 years & taught both piano & violin for over 20 years. I also teach flute & cello for the past 5 years, as I studied them during my Music Education program.

I
teach music for over 24 years using the traditional and Suzuki methods. I am a fan of the Essential Elements 2000 for string instruments, and the Alfred's Piano Library for piano. Alfred's piano library can be used for any age as they also have books especially made for adult learners. I also like their music flash cards.
For teaching music theory I mostly used Master Theory.

I personalize every lesson, and always set goals for my students. Most of my violin students are members of the Florida Youth Orchestra as well as Gold Coast Youth Orchestra and my piano students participate in Pompano Beach competition and the annual Piano Guild auditions.
I teach any age and any level, and always stress that learning a new instrument is very similar to learning a new language, it needs a lot of patience, persistence and repetitions. My lessons are customized to my students needs, and are work in progress as they needs may change over time. I always remind my students that music can give them instant gratification when they learn to play favorite songs.
I always encourage my students to tell me about their music preferences, so I can incorporate them in their music lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
All my tutoring sessions include reviews of previously learned material and if possible the use of technology. I use students books but often bring extra study materials if necessary.
All my lessons include: technique: I like to use the Finger Power for piano students and Essential Elements for my string students, and scales for both.
music theory: I use Master Theory or other books such as Hal Leonard's Piano Note spellers & Piano Music Theory books for younger ages, music flash cards to support learning notes and musical terminology, and of course the fun part performance.

Besides Essential Elements 2000 for strings I also use String Tunes and Fiddle Runners to add more fun to the lessons. For piano students I use Holiday Treats book, which comes in 2 different levels: Beginner & Intermediate, so my students have a new songs for a specific holiday.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I always bring violin with me to be able to show what I teach.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The students needs to have their books and assigned material ready for tutoring. Instrumental students needs to have their music books & instrument available as well as a pencil. I always stress with my students to be organized and prepared for their lesson, this way they will be able to focus better during the lesson. I bring my violin with me. I also ask that the room where the lesson takes place to be free of any distractions, such other siblings or any other noise. The quiet environment helps in faster learning.

*** Specialties ***
I tutor most K-12 subjects and prepare students to take ACT, SAT, GRE tests.
Music genres: Classical, traditional, Suzuki, Popular, Celtic, fiddle, Blues

Antonella taught me (female age 35) and my son (age 11) piano for about 1-2 years. She was patient with us and very flexible with our busy schedule. Some press:

Phil's compositions showcase a variety of ideas and are quite effective at setting up the soloists to explore the various permutations suggested by his tunes. His compositional originality is matched by his incisive playing which ranges from "inside" lyricism to hard edged, riff based, screaming rock and satisfying surreal textures aided by his intelligent use of electronics."

Although I'm not technically a student of Phil's, I learn a lot from him every time I play and teach with him. We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). Phil's a warmhearted, patient, brilliant teacher and an outstanding and creative musician, seamlessly putting together everything he knows--jazz, shredding, classical--there's no boundaries for him! He's great at explaining things, and he never belittles a question, no matter how dumb you might have thought it was. In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. He is well versed in so many genres of music, and has such an effortless grasp on improvisation. Any guitarist, from immediate beginners to seasoned professionals, can learn so much from Phil. Whether playing just for your own enjoyment or as part of a popular ensemble, the course in music performance will enhance your skills and confidence. You will learn how to selectively use recorded tracks from Audacity to act as sort of a "third-hand". Learn about pads and effects and when to properly use those. Discernment is key and you will learn which songs work for keyboards and which do not.

About Chet
Hi, my name is Chet. My students call me "Mr. Chet." I have been teaching piano, keyboard and synthesizer since 2005. Originally from near Portland, Oregon, I took courses from the Berklee School of Music in Boston and have been playing professionally since just out of high school. You wanna know how to get those professional-sounding licks into your playing? I can help you do that. Most sheet music is so bare-bones that it almost doesn't sound like the song- together we will learn how to beef it up. My lessons are meant to be fun while you learn- and they are because they are written just for you. I have a pretty laid-back teaching style, but if you think you can just goof off, you'll find out differently really quickly.

I have taught and coached voice for several years and am available for students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so that students gain experience in the genre of their choice, while also building a strong foundation rooted in classical technique. I use this technique as a basis for development over any genre of music. I am also available to teach fundamentals that are often required for vocal success, such as, beginner piano, music theory, and ear training.

I am a firm believer in asking questions, for myself and my students, so that we can come to a better understanding of what techniques work best for you in each lesson and track your progress from week to week.

About Leslie
My name is Leslie, and I recently graduated from James Madison University with a degree in music education. I've been involved with teaching in various capacities from about age 8 until now, but have been teaching voice and piano lessons anywhere from Pre-K to lifelong learning groups for the past several years now.

I grew up learning classical methods for voice and have been able to translate those healthy techniques to other styles of music. I have most recently performed in operas through JMU and other professional groups, have been involved in their musicals as well as in semi-professional productions, and have enjoyed my time singing in jazz combos. Participating in both performance and education has always been important in my life, and I hope to continue this trend. Not only do I find both settings incredibly enjoyable, but I a
m a firm believer that teachers should be able to practice what they preach as far as skill acquisition and work ethic!

While voice is my primary instrument, I also offer piano for beginning and intermediate students as well as ear training lessons. While we have fun in our lessons and with music, a certain amount of discipline and practice time is necessary for improvement. You'll find that I'm very organized in my approach for all subjects, as I take the time that you are paying for seriously. I work hard to offer comprehensive lessons that will help you with whatever genre you're learning or skills you're working to hone.

If you have any questions at all- about lessons, your teacher search, or scheduling, feel free to send me a note, and I'll be happy to get back to you as quickly as possible!
