I've been drawing my whole time practically, and it's something that I always want to be doing more. Whether it's looking outside at the still landscape, or recreating a moving scene, drawing has always been a passion of mine.
I can help you with putting what you see in your mind onto paper more genuinely. We'll work on perspective, scale, color gradients, shading, detailing, and much more.
Hi! I'm Dr. Jonathan Saraga; professional musician and educator living in New York City. I have been working as a trumpeter, composer, arranger, and studio musician for almost 2 decades and have been teaching full-time for the past 7, which includes nearly 3 at the University level. I have nearly 10 years of conservatory training, a Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degree, as well as over 20 years experience performing, recording, and competing on an international level.
I’ve been recognized internationally, by way of several organizations for excellence as a trumpeter and composer: 2007-Winner of International Trumpet Guild Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition; 2009-Finalist in Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition; 2011- Selected Participant in School for Improvisational Music Intensive Program; 2014-Callback for the Juil
liard Artist Diploma program auditions; 2015-Selected Participant in Banff International Summer Intensive Program in Jazz and Creative Music ; 2016-Semi Finalist in International Songwriting Competition; 2016-Recipient of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award; 2017-Honorable Mention and Finalist in International Songwriting Competition; 2016-19-Full Scholarship w/ Paid Assistantship/Instructorship for Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder; 2019-Selected Participant in Banff Early Fall Musicians in Residence program; 2019-Finalist in Chamber Music America’s New Jazz Works Grant Competition.
I perform and record as a featured musician with Festival of New Trumpet Music, having participated in two world premieres, and in ensembles led by highly acclaimed and/or Grammy-nominated/winning artists such as Steve Coleman, Henry Cole, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, Orrin Evans, Josh Evans, Jimmy Greene, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Bergen and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. I've performed at arenas, clubs, and concert halls alike, such as Carnegie Hall, The Putra World Tower, Symphony Space, the Barclay's Center, Dizzy's Club Coco-Cola, and Rockefeller Center to name only a few venues. As a leader, I've been performing original music all over NYC at known creative and jazz venues like Seeds, Cornelia St. Café, The Bar Next Door, Jazz at the Kitano, Shapeshifter Lab and Smalls Jazz Club, which Down Beat magazine considers to be two of the best jazz clubs in the world.
Besides professing a passion and skill-set for music within the ‘jazz’ idiom, my interest in and usage of sound draws from and many other forms of art. I've composed and arranged music for lyricists, improvised music for poetry readings at the Firehouse Space, and have provided musical accompaniment for dance classes, workshops, and performances presented by the Martha Graham Dance Academy and the Jeoffrey Ballet School. I've even co-choreographed short plays and have played for Marc Jacobs fashion runway shows.
My music also extends into the health and wellness community. I've served as a regular performer at the New Life Expo, and as a musical aid for art exhibitions (including a Syrian-post war realist art exhibition), Yoga classes at Jivamukti Jersey City, and meditation classes for WeWork, St. Peter's Church at the Citicorp Center, The Tibet House, Triskelion Arts the Firehouse Space, the Jewish Community Center, the New York Insight Meditation Center, and the NYU Skirball Theater.
As an educator, I have taught all-level/all-age group music playing and appreciation courses for several New York-based organizations: The Afro-Latin Jazz Academy, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York, New York Ensemble Classes, the Lyceum Kennedy International School, Jubilee Enrichment Programs, Jazz Empowers and The New York Jazz Academy. I have also completed 6 semesters of service as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I taught multiple playing ensembles as well as three semesters of a 100+ student History of Jazz lecture class for non-majors.
I teach out of a my home apartment studio on the upper east side, complete with weighted 88-key digital piano, Bose high quality speakers, recording equipment, as well as musical media, and tablature spanning many musical genres, cultures and time periods. I also am equipped with a spacious floor space for Yoga, Pilates, Weight Lifting, Meditation, and more.
While I specialize in the following broad areas of musical study, my specialties are not limited to: General Music, Composition, Arranging, Ear Training, Music History (includes classical, jazz, and world musics), Music Theory, Sight Singing, and Songwriting. I also specialize in the following instruments: Trumpet, flugelhorn, and Piano/Keyboards.
Last but not least, while I have invested over 30,000 hours into my musical training, my interests, practices, and skill sets extend beyond sound and visual art, and into the realm of philosophy, science, physics and spirituality. I have been practicing various forms of fitness, meditation and Yoga for the past 5 years, and my studies span the gamut of psychology, philosophy, calisthenics, Astral Projection, Reiki, Vipassana Meditation, Visualization, and much more.
I believe and live by the idea that creativity is an energy that flows through us, and one's creative abilities can be improved and expanded, through the emotional body, which is influenced by one's perceptions. Throughout my training in music, the arts, as well as my physical, mental and spiritual pursuits, I have realized that discipline, creative flow, and love for what one is and what one does can come together and yield great fulfillment and sense of purpose.
I would highly recommend Jonathan as a music teacher. Jonathan is absolutely passionate about music, which is evident by his enthusiastic and energetic teaching techniques. He is very patient with my five year old and encourages her to get her very best effort. Jonathan customizes the music and lessons for my daughter’s skill level while at the same time provides challenges to keep the learning process interesting. In a short period of time, my daughter's keyboard playing abilities have dramatically increased. I am very grateful to Jonathan for making learning fun for my daughter, who always looks forward to her lessons!

Jonathan has made a great impression with my son. He displays a great combination of patience and encouragement with Nick. I have seen an improvement in his trumpet skills as well as his confidence.
I have taken drawing since I was 4 years old at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids Michigan. I have always been a keen drawer of illustration to portraits to still lifes. I can take you through the basics of each of these categories and challenge you to more advanced work as well. I have also worked as a drawing model for groups in New Orleans, and can model for our lessons as well.

Drawing is the process of learning to see & allowing your hand to move with your mind as you process what you see. It is line, space, shape, shadow, texture, mass, value, light, and the inspiration of the artist. It ranges from sketching to detailed drawing--depending on your temperament and interest. Additionally, you can schedule a lesson and let me know that you want to use it as a critique to review some of your work. I recommend the 45 minute session for a critique.
I LOVE teaching. I'm an award-winning artist and I've taught watercolor & drawing for 20+ years. I've taught students of all ages from the US & Italy. I've taught at Cleveland Botanical Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, Illinois Central College, in churches, libraries, home schools, & at Harvard University Extension School, Cambridge, MA. We will paint or draw what appeals to YOU...from oceans to flowers to abstracts to landscapes to seascapes, etc. --or we can focus on one technique that interests you or "the basics."
Some of my students are now professional artists & some have become art teachers. The materials can be simple. For drawing, we’ll use drawing tools (pencils, charcoal, etc) a great eraser, & paper. For watercolor painting, we'll use a couple of good quality brushes, about 6 paint colors, watercolor paper, water and a
palette. Ta-Da! You’re ready to go. (I’ll provide a detailed supply list for enrolled students.)
One hour and I learned 5 new things, learned how to arrange my palette for en plein air, and had fun!

Jane is extremely friendly and made me feel at ease immediately. She listened to my questions and responded quickly. While I have worked in other media this is my first in watercolors. I look forward to more lessons.

About J. Paul
Teaching art has always been my passion and my students respond well to me and my teaching style. Many of my students have gone from not even knowing that they had any real artistic ability to going on to pursue college level art or pursueing artistic careers. I have students from years ago that will still contact me for art related questions and some who have become close friends. I believe that my nearly 2 1/2 decades of teaching art in a public school has made me capable of the patience and caring needed to teach any and all learning styles. We can start at whatever skill level you are currently at.
I had his art class when I first moved to Vincent. Such an amazing teacher! Knows so much about Art and watching him draw you can see it’s his passion!

Sure, I'd be happy to! you were and still are one of the best teachers I had. you encouraged my creative side and nurtured my ability to see a image and transfer it on to paper. I felt like you understood me and would come along side me and help me. I only have good things to say about you Mr.Williamson. you are a good man. a good friend. and a great teacher. thank you for all you thaught me sir. I will forever be in your debt.
I can take you from a beginner drawer into an award-winning artist! I will help you pursue your passion along with developing the necessary skills of drawing. If you have never drawn before I can have you drawing circles with precision. If you are intermediate in drawing I can have you drawing with realism to enter art contests.
I specialize in realism or realistic pencil drawing. I also draw with pen, which does not allow for mistakes to occur. I start with a blank sheet of paper that eventually develops into a finished piece of art that usually takes about 8 hours of straight drawing. I have won many art awards. I began drawing just like you from a private teacher although it was from a gallery owner for 8 years. I eventually attended Otis Art & Design in Los Angeles where I was told I drew like a senior within my first month in college. I am currently producing art pieces to enter into art galleries and sell prints online.
I am a classically trained artist who works primarily in oil. My main genre is portraiture and I have taught life drawing and portrait painting in both the UK and USA. I have many years of experience and teach from foundations of painting and drawing to more complex subjects like colour theory and composition. My studio is located in downtown Santa Barbara but I am happy to travel and teach at your home as well as to teach landscape painting outdoors.

Great teacher! Saw myself getting a lot better after each lesson

Great teacher! She was very patient with me and with every lesson, I saw myself improving. I only participated in group classes before and having a teacher tailor each lesson to my level made such a huge difference. She really knows how to break down complicated things to make them easier to draw.
I want to help you to become a better artist and have fun while you’re doing it! My style of teaching is to tell you about powerful ways to approach your drawings that will boost your technical ability as fast as possible. In other words, I’m going to help you to make your art look like the thing you’re drawing. But I won’t rush you through it! We’ll take as long as you need to get a good understanding of the most important aspects of the lesson. We can focus on what you are most interested in learning about. Want to learn how to draw faces better? Or maybe improve your proportions for drawing a full body person? Pets, landscapes, still life, it’s your choice because I work for you. Each of these are unique subjects, but there are certain fundamentals that apply to all of them which I will help you with to give your drawings more of a “pop out” look! Some of those things are learning to see values (light and dark), negative space, and how angles and relationships of different elements
I want to help you make huge leaps in your skills to become a better artist than you even thought was possible! Whatever you want to create, you can do it! Private lessons can save a lot of time and keep you on the right path for your personal individual needs, where ever you are on your way to becoming Leonardo (not DiCaprio, the other one). Want to learn how to draw lifelike faces? Paint realistic still life? Improve your proportions with the human figure? Master color with landscapes? I have experience doing all of these things and I want to share with you some of the best methods to go about them.
There are all kinds of different ways to approach drawing or painting the same thing. You should use the techniques that feel most natural and work best for you. I will customize your lesson to the subject, medium and speed that you pre
fer, so that as long as you've got the necessary fundamentals taken care of, you can make strides in whatever area you want. I hope that you will sign up for a lesson with me so I can show you how! If you're not sure where to start, just send me a message and we'll figure it out.
I’ve been painting with oils for almost three decades, and drawing for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a full time fine artist for over a decade now. I’ve been doing guest demos and teaching private and group lessons for many years, for various subject matter and age groups.
After graduating from Tyler School of Art at Temple University with a major in Painting, I had jobs making signs by hand, doing T-shirt designs, in a graphic design studio with clients like M&M Mars, Claritin and Revlon. As a freelance artist, I did logos, movie poster illustration, album art and packaging design. I even scored and created sound effects for some short films! Yes, I play keyboard as well.
For my fine art, I’ve worked in many different mediums including watercolor, acrylics, digital, ceramics, sculpture, metal casting and photography. But painting with oils and drawing are my most preferred ways of creating (drawing is the basis for painting). I’ve painted and drawn many different kinds of subjects, but the figure is my favorite. I have worked from photo reference and from life (something right in front of me) as well as from my imagination; the range of styles that I have used have gone from photorealism all the way to cartoons. I am proficient in Photoshop, which I currently use often to create composite images as reference for my paintings. My paintings have been displayed in many shows across the country, and have sold internationally.

He loves to analyze complex sciences and the world around him, and as an outcome he formulates fascinating theories. Not only is a great teacher, but a friend who truly inspires those around him."
