I am a private woodwind instructor and professional freelance musician. My main instrument is saxophone and I double on flute, teaching both with the addition of beginner to intermediate clarinet. I am experienced in many different genres of music and have performed and recorded with many jazz, latin, funk, soul, fusion, R&B, pop, and classical ensembles.
For me teaching is extremely rewarding, the fact that I get to share and guide students through this creative art form that is so dear to me is really a special thing. Kevin has been my teacher for 3 years. We meet once a week. Kevin is a gifted teacher (and a great musician). He only corrects a mistake once I've reached the level when I can fix it. This way I have been making progress week after week, and it feels good.

Kevin is a wonderful teacher. My daughter started saxophone lessons with him at the beginning of the summer and she adores him. He's funny, patient, encouraging and thoughtful. We couldn't ask for a better sax teacher! Kevin also taught a master class at my older son's middle school and he was fantastic. I highly recommend him!

About Marie-France
I have taught piano and voice most of my adult life. Early on I learned the need to adapt my teaching style to the uniqueness of each student, especially those whose perceptions differ widely from the general populace. I love what I do, helping each student discover and nurture their abilities, no matter what age the student may be.

The Holistic Piano method is especially effective with my Autism-spectrum students, a segment of the population I find particularly rewarding to teach.

The following is a quote from ex-student Karena Krull, author of "Drama Made Easy", and "Rummy Roots."

“Her greatest strength is her ability to find the right direction for each individual. This ability to adapt to the student's needs lends to individual success for student and avoids their frustration. If her current method or communication is
n't creating success for a student she will quickly change to another till she finds the right words or method to enable the student to succeed with the least amount of frustration.”

*** Lesson Details ***
I draw on a wide range of materials in The Holistic Piano (and voice) method. The curriculum may be color-based or number-based, we might focus on chord building or sight-reading, or Songwriting, depending on the student's need and desire.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Large Music Room: one grand piano, 2 keyboards, parents can sit in on lesson from living room

*** Specialties ***
Because each student is an individual, I approach teaching like a coach, custom designing a course of study for each student to meet their individual needs.

About Mary
Mary is a Tony nominated writer, actress, and teacher whose Broadway credits include Martha Jefferson in "1776" and Grace Farrell in "Annie". She was a starring soloist In Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" at the Kennedy Center and the Metropolitan Opera and toured as featured vocal with Michel LeGand in concerts including Carnegie Hall. Off Broadway credits include her own musical, "Cradle Song". She studied voice with the great Sue Seton and later with opera star and tenor coach at the Metropolitan Opera, Felix Knight. She teaches a combination of both their legendary techniques. As an actor, she studied acting with Sanford Meisner in NYC, the Rheinhardt Seminar in Vienna, Austria and has been teaching and directing beginning, intermediate and professionsl singers and actors for over fifteen years. Former students have appeared on "Thirt
y Rock", Gilmore Girls", "Law and Order" and others. Her goal in working with her students is not only to teach healthy vocal technique, but in keeping with her theatre background, her strong belief that "Every song is a scene or monoglogue" leads her to make sure the student know what they are singing or speaking about, and can do so with a clarity of emotion and dramatic intent.
She has a BA in theatre/voice from the University of Kansas where she serves on the Advisory Board For the Department of Theatre and Film and has an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts where she is a guest lecturer. She is a member of AEA, SAG/AFTRA, AGMA and The Dramatists Guild.
"Mary is able to reach not only those students who are already excited about theater but inspire those who have no previous knowledge of it. To watch these young men and women become more and more accomplished is a marvelous thing. She inspired them all."...Mark St. Germain, Obie winning playwright.

In a one hour lesson, we will spend twenty five minutes on vocal exercises designed to teach support and placement. Having performed leads on and Off Broadway, I know that without good technique you can't do eight shows a week, do back to back sets in a nightclub or cabaret or tour as a pop or rock singer. The second half of the lesson is spent on songs. As an acting as well as vocal coach, I focus on dramatics as well as musical interpretation. A singer must be connected to the words as well as the music. I hope to teach you to love singing as much as I do.

Mary Phillips is excellent! I highly recommend her. Her knowledge of technique and her ability to explain it's proper applications helped my daughter improve not only her vocal quality but her range. Mary also worked on building her self confidence and attitude. I've notice a significant improvement in her approach to auditions. She is less nervous and more confident in her skills. We had a hard time trying to find an instructor who values someone with a lower range. I wish we had found her earlier!

Mary was an absolute godsend! I started lessons with her to help prepare for college theatre auditions. I was so overwhelmed with the whole process and didn't even know where to begin picking monologues and songs. Mary helped me so much by sending different monologues that she thought would fit and we would go from there. She was always there to answer any questions I had, and I had a lot! She is patient and encouraging and our lessons were always a lot of fun but I also learned so much! I also took voice lessons from Mary and in doing so, my voice has greatly improved and so has my confidence. I just finished all of my auditions and I truly could not have done this without her. I couldn't recommend her more!

LESSON DETAILS

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).

Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.

Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION

SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.

ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:

1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.

3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.

4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.

6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

*** Studio Equipment ***
PRIVATE HOME STUDIO: Keyboard, speakers (smartphone, iPod, iPad), CD player, tape recorder/player, digital recorder, music stand, mirror, laptop, sheet music selections, HD video camera, tripod, video editing software, audio editing software, USB microphone, and high speed WiFi internet. I have a Masters in Education as well as having spent many years performing, teaching in one on one and group settings both privately and at music camps and festivals. I play and teach bluegrass, old time, Irish, and swing jazz styles. I like my students to really enjoy playing music and their lessons as well as learning to become fluent in the language of music. It is not required that folks learn to read music necessarily, but it can be a part of the lessons if desired. I love to see my students able to continue learning and playing on their own, be able to hold their own at jams and on the stage is they so desire, or just enjoy making music for themselves. I have techniques that have proven effective to help get past jam phobia, that help folks learn to improvise who have not had any luck with doing so before, and help getting away fro
m sheet music addictions to be able to have fun and confidence out at jams. I also can give a good foundation in music theory as it applies to one's actual playing and have it be fun and make sense.

About Jane
My goal of teaching is to help students discover their talent and love for music in a natural way. I began jamming music with my parents when I was 3 years old. I remember the feeling of joy and excitement when making music with them. Now as a teacher, I try to bring this enjoyment based approach to classes and teach my students to not think they are working and instead, enjoy the practice of making music. I believe that when a student is inspired and enjoys the learning process, they naturally strive to get better.

As I began playing piano at a very young age, I've developed an ability called absolute pitch. It is a rare auditory phenomenon that enabled me to play nearly any song I heard, without having a score. And this really help me to teach my students the songs they love as scores are not always readily available and I am abl
e to write out a customized score that suits their level.

My students will have covered different areas of music, including classical repertoire, jazz, rock, pop, composition and theory. I give private lessons for all ages and levels for piano in my technology integrated home studio in Briarcliff Manor, NY. I received my degree from Berklee College of Music and New York University. I'm also certified with the associated board of the Royal school of music and Trinity College of Music in London.

Studio equipment:
Grand piano, full size electric keyboard, violin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, amps, accordion, microphone, music computer games, recording and composing software, seating area for parents.

Hi guitarists, my name is Chris. I am a singer songwriter and guitar player. I teach beginners to advanced in the styles of Rock/Pop,Country/Bluegrass, and Blues. Everybody is different and learn at a different rate. I set up a class that will work best for you. We start with the basics. All the good stuff! You learn to read, keep time. We will pick a song to start that you want to learn, and away we go! I feel that learning shouldn't feel like homework. You should be excited to pick up the guitar. No doubt learning something new can be a bit scary, and the beauty of the guitar is what you put into it, you will get back in spades!

Some students I teach are interested in songwriting and recording, which I teach as well.We will learn what makes a song a song, and how to write one. I have a Pro Tools studio and offer my songwriting stud
ents the chance to write their own songs and record and make a CD or MP3 of their new hit. Feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss further how best guitar/songwriting fits in your world!

I have studied under Chris’ tutelage for a little over one year. I can say with confidence, Chris is
one of the kindest, most knowledgeable, accommodating, and encouraging instructors I have ever had
the privilege of studying with.

Instruction: Chris works at the level of his student. He doesn’t assume you have mastery in any skill and
works with you each week to build up a core set of basic skills. From an early point, Chris was able to
adapt to my level and show me fundamental skill building exercises.

Lesson Variety: Chris would teach different aspects to learning the guitar with each lesson. He would
supply any instrument or tool needed and would take the time to explain what each object does. At the
end of each lesson, I would feel confident in the material that was being taught, and felt that each
lesson was new and important. I’ve learned various rhythms, notes, styles of playing, and more.

Flexibility: Chris was very accommodating to my schedule. He was consistent and timely for each lesson,
and understanding when life circumstances would interfere. He works well at adapting to how you want
to learn, a key ingredient to being an effective instructor.

In summary, Chris was an excellent instructor, I learned a lot from his weekly lessons, and he is
just a straight-up nice guy. I would recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play the guitar or
improve one’s skills.

Hello to all,
I was a weekly student for Chris, and I have to say that our lessons together we're always a great time for the both of us. I practiced with Chris for about two years, and in that time I never once felt like I was under some sort of pressure to get prepared for the next lesson. The reason for that is because Chris is the kind of teacher that makes you want to get better. Every time he left me an assignment of some sort, whether it be practicing blues progressions to recording a solo part to a rythym track, I could never help myself from getting to work the second he stepped out my front door. Chris truly created an atmosphere for me that made it easy to learn, and I'm the kind of person who has a hard time learning. I seriously recommend Chris not only because he is a great teacher but a great friend as well!
