I am in New York City and accepting new students as well as reconnecting with anyone who wants to return. I have two graduate degrees: one in Music and the other in Dance and Theater studies. My undergraduate degree is from The Juilliard School, in Dance.
I've taught children and grown ups for many years. I have a strong performing career and love the way teaching keeps me in a giving and learning place.
*** Lesson Details *** With beginning students I am very laid back and patient and believe strongly that in the play of games and experiments technique will develop and manifest. As the student becomes more advanced I become more demanding as do the materials.
As an Acting teacher I have the capacity to take students along all the way to professional and beyond. I'm a member of the Actors Studio, the performing unions and ha
ve studied since childhood at ACT and then all over the world including The National in London.
For Dance, I have a wide knowledge and can teach several forms as well as history and materials. I also teach Ballet and many forms of Modern Dance. I adore teaching dance composition. To help a dance student make their own dances is very fulfilling. I also teach choreography or composition. One of the aspects of dance composition that has recently captivated me is the composing of sound and music for the dance that is also being made. Using software, we can explore electroacoustic as well as language and text collage as sound score for your dance. It is super fun!!!
For the Visual Arts I teach Abstract Painting as well as Installation and Performance Art. *** Studio Equipment *** I have supplies and space. Visual Art students need to contribute to materials by finding or purchasing whatever they like and adding to the mix. My students are welcome to use what I have here and I am always adding materials. Many people throw away materials that are perfectly good for art making so keep your eyes open and you'll find all kinds of good things. Visual Art students need to book a 2 hour minimum and I will lower the price if you just let me know you need it.
My fees: I start at a higher fee and after you've been a regular student we can lower the fee for you if you need.
*** Travel Equipment *** just a space to work in - we can create a work space out of any space.
*** Specialties *** In dance I teach classical ballet principles for beginners or those who are returning and want to work carefully and privately. I teach from the tradition of Alfredo Corvino's principles of relationship to organic forms and structures for sound development. I studied with Mr Corvino for years and continue to study with Ernesta Corvino. For acting I teach a combination of classical acting technique with American sense memory and relaxation skills. I am well versed in the teachings of Lee Strasberg and then spent time in London to 'fill in the cracks' of my training with analytical skills as well as the various european influences that the Royal National embrace. I teach creative discovery in combination with classical devices so the student can discover their own artistry while learning actual classical devices for accomplishing specific goals.

I perform and record as a featured musician with Festival of New Trumpet Music, having participated in two world premieres, and in ensembles led by highly acclaimed and/or Grammy-nominated/winning artists such as Steve Coleman, Henry Cole, Maria Schneider, Darcy James Argue, Orrin Evans, Josh Evans, Jimmy Greene, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Bergen and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. I've performed at arenas, clubs, and concert halls alike, such as Carnegie Hall, The Putra World Tower, Symphony Space, the Barclay's Center, Dizzy's Club Coco-Cola, and Rockefeller Center to name only a few venues. As a leader, I've been performing original music all over NYC at known creative and jazz venues like Seeds, Cornelia St. Café, The Bar Next Door, Jazz at the Kitano, Shapeshifter Lab and Smalls Jazz Club, which Down Beat magazine considers to be two of the best jazz clubs in the world.
Besides professing a passion and skill-set for music within the ‘jazz’ idiom, my interest in and usage of sound draws from and many other forms of art. I've composed and arranged music for lyricists, improvised music for poetry readings at the Firehouse Space, and have provided musical accompaniment for dance classes, workshops, and performances presented by the Martha Graham Dance Academy and the Jeoffrey Ballet School. I've even co-choreographed short plays and have played for Marc Jacobs fashion runway shows.
My music also extends into the health and wellness community. I've served as a regular performer at the New Life Expo, and as a musical aid for art exhibitions (including a Syrian-post war realist art exhibition), Yoga classes at Jivamukti Jersey City, and meditation classes for WeWork, St. Peter's Church at the Citicorp Center, The Tibet House, Triskelion Arts the Firehouse Space, the Jewish Community Center, the New York Insight Meditation Center, and the NYU Skirball Theater.
As an educator, I have taught all-level/all-age group music playing and appreciation courses for several New York-based organizations: The Afro-Latin Jazz Academy, The Gramercy Brass Orchestra of New York, New York Ensemble Classes, the Lyceum Kennedy International School, Jubilee Enrichment Programs, Jazz Empowers and The New York Jazz Academy. I have also completed 6 semesters of service as a Graduate Part-Time Instructor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where I taught multiple playing ensembles as well as three semesters of a 100+ student History of Jazz lecture class for non-majors.
I teach out of a my home apartment studio on the upper east side, complete with weighted 88-key digital piano, Bose high quality speakers, recording equipment, as well as musical media, and tablature spanning many musical genres, cultures and time periods. I also am equipped with a spacious floor space for Yoga, Pilates, Weight Lifting, Meditation, and more.
While I specialize in the following broad areas of musical study, my specialties are not limited to: General Music, Composition, Arranging, Ear Training, Music History (includes classical, jazz, and world musics), Music Theory, Sight Singing, and Songwriting. I also specialize in the following instruments: Trumpet, flugelhorn, and Piano/Keyboards.
Last but not least, while I have invested over 30,000 hours into my musical training, my interests, practices, and skill sets extend beyond sound and visual art, and into the realm of philosophy, science, physics and spirituality. I have been practicing various forms of fitness, meditation and Yoga for the past 5 years, and my studies span the gamut of psychology, philosophy, calisthenics, Astral Projection, Reiki, Vipassana Meditation, Visualization, and much more.
I believe and live by the idea that creativity is an energy that flows through us, and one's creative abilities can be improved and expanded, through the emotional body, which is influenced by one's perceptions. Throughout my training in music, the arts, as well as my physical, mental and spiritual pursuits, I have realized that discipline, creative flow, and love for what one is and what one does can come together and yield great fulfillment and sense of purpose.
I would highly recommend Jonathan as a music teacher. Jonathan is absolutely passionate about music, which is evident by his enthusiastic and energetic teaching techniques. He is very patient with my five year old and encourages her to get her very best effort. Jonathan customizes the music and lessons for my daughter’s skill level while at the same time provides challenges to keep the learning process interesting. In a short period of time, my daughter's keyboard playing abilities have dramatically increased. I am very grateful to Jonathan for making learning fun for my daughter, who always looks forward to her lessons!

Jonathan has made a great impression with my son. He displays a great combination of patience and encouragement with Nick. I have seen an improvement in his trumpet skills as well as his confidence.
Professional and internationally exhibited artist based in New York City. I make mixed media abstract paintings using acrylic paint, fabric, paper, canvas and a variety of found materials. Hello! My name is Sylvia and I'm here to help you learn a new skill or master it to a new level! I've been teaching private lessons since 2001 and am currently available to teach lessons at your home, at the public library, in my studio and online. I have loved helping my students with education classes such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, mathematics, english, science, dancing salsa and cha cha, painting, illustrating fashion, sewing, computer coding, playing the violin, to personal training.
I have always had many interests and luckily I worked hard at them with great teachers to achieve great levels. I went to University of New South Wales and earned a degree in Software Engineering in 2003, and also Sydney TAFE to earn a Fashion Design degree in 2009.
I'm a friendly and understanding person and my teaching style is patien
t, motivating, and positive. I believe everyone can achieve what they want with the right mindset and the right opportunity. My aim is to help you reach your goals and make you feel accomplished!
Sylvia is an excellent teacher. I was starting from scratch, and she was able to quickly teach me how to do numerous important tasks relative to what I was looking to accomplish. I recommend her without reservation.

I’m Kathy and I am a professional artist in New York! I received my Masters of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute and my Bachelors degree at Skidmore College. I make painting and textile-based 3D installations and have shown widely in the Bay Area, New York, and Chicago. I was a past artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center, Recology, and the Lucid Art Foundation. I’m passionate about arts education, interdisciplinary thinking, art history, ecological stewardship, and color theory. I love teaching art!
I’ve taught a variety of ages and skill levels and care about each student as an individual artist and human being. I design individualized lesson plans for each student with creative, engaging assignments that focus on both technical skill and personal expression. I love helping my students learn and grow as artists.
And I love little kids, so if you're a parent or guardian who just wants your child to have fun with art, I'm the teacher for you!
I’m passionate about art history and color theory. In our lessons, not only will you learn how to draw and paint, you will also learn the cultural history around the subject. I will show you historical and contemporary examples of artwork that fit thematically with our lessons. We will have engaging conversations about art while we draw and paint. I can also point you towards art openings happening around New York.
My personal teaching style is patient, constructive, and encouraging. With practice and hard work, I can help you achieve your goals.
Other things I love include: Spending time in the Great Outdoors, listening to Billie Holiday, and cooking elaborate meals!
Have a question? Don't be shy, send me a message and let's get started! I can't wait to meet you.
I enjoy people! I come from South Africa where I taught English and Speech & Drama - high school level and produced plays and shows for schools and dramatic societies for several years. I started and ran a photographic club at school. My passion and ability for photography landed me a job at a large Performing Arts Council where I covered dance of all kinds, drama, opera and music and beyond! Since working in the US. as a photographer and videographer, I have among my clients The Juilliard School, Lincoln Center, The New York Times, Carnegie Hall and many more... I have traveled all over the world and have a deep appreciation of and interest in the culture of all peoples. I love spontaneity and open to different ways of learning. My work has been widely published in books and other - and online.
Hello! I moved to Brooklyn fifteen years ago to get my MFA at Pratt Institute; I've been a professional fine artist for my entire adult life and have shown my work extensively in and around New York. I have taught traditional oil painting at local ateliers and I also teach plein air workshops in the Hudson Valley through the Artist’s Workshop Association. In 2018 I was invited by the US Department of State to teach a series of oil painting workshops at an art college in Algiers, Algeria, because one of my paintings hangs in the Ambassador's Residence there. It was an amazing experience! I love talking about painting and drawing and demonstrating what I've learned. For more info, pics, and demonstrations, you can check out my IG (@eileen_murphy_studio) or my website (eileenmurphy.net).
For both drawing and painting, I lead my students thr
ough a series of exercises that teach the fundamentals of observation and execution. My own work is very realistic, so I have the technical skills to demonstrate to students how to reach the goals they want, whether or not they want the results to be exactly true to life. A lot of my students end up making more expressionist work which is great! And some others are interested in making very traditional paintings.
Additional note: I provide materials for beginning painters so that you don’t have to invest in paint and brushes until you know for sure that you want to continue with it. I think that makes it easier for people to get started.
I also teach small group lessons (2-3 people) so message me for that pricing if you have a few pals you want to bring with you!
Super nice and helpful ! So interesting and so much fun ! I’m looking forward to the next lesson , and ultimately learning to paint in oils with Eileen’s guidance !

Eileen has been great to work with online, therecreally are no painting teachers in my area who have the technical knowledge to help me out so I was really stuck. We only started recently but I’m learning so much faster now.
June 25, 2019
I’ve been working with Eileen online for awhile now and it’s been really great. I’ve learned so much from her techniques and her tips about my palette and brushes. I’ve learned a lot just by watching but her comments to me have really helped my painting progress much faster.
"Eileen is a great teacher with a lot of specific strategies for building a painting. She is very clear, personable and fun to work with. Her knowledge of
materials and techniques can help anyone advance their skills and better understand the medium."
"VERY GOOD LESSON I LEARNED AND ITWAS STRESS FREE"
"I am an adult student (33) taking beginner drawing lessons with Jessica. My interest/goal is to draw realistic portraits (maybe in a few years), but with
no background, I'd better start from the basics, and I am so glad to have Jessica as my teacher. Her philosophy about how to approach art alone is already teaching me so much - for example, what's the correct mindset, how to really observe a subject, how to practice drawing even when I am not drawing.
We have been working on building up foundational skills and their sequence, which gives me clear understanding on what each small step means in the long term. Based on my interest and what I knew and didn’t know, Jessica would design each lesson with a specific focus in mind, usually around practicing a certain technique. Her homework (I ask for homework since I draw slowly) also reinforces those learnings. I feel more confident with each lesson, and my progress is noticeable.
Also, she is incredibly encouraging, patient, and generous. I never feel judged or self-conscious practicing techniques in front of her (often clumsily) or showing her my new drawings. She always gives thorough feedback and encouraging words. Overall, she gives me confidence on my journey, and that is much needed for an adult student who didn’t have the chance to start when younger. Best teacher ever!"
"My work schedule has interrupted my lessons for a while now, but Kelvin is a kind hearted instructor who truly believes in developing his students.
will continue lessons with him as soon as I can."
"Love the way that he started in the right position for me. The class flowed very Lacey and he's a very nice man"
"I had a wonderful experience during my first lesson with Julie! She was easy to talk to and very informative."
Thanks again for your time and info yesterday. I will email you soon, and we will figure out when we should meet for our next class.
ve a great day!
"Joe couldn't have been better. He was super knowledgeable about drawing and was able to focus on the areas I wanted to improve on and explain things in a
really helpful way!! Would highly recommend."
"I worked with Margarita on a short film, ''Helena's Dream'' and her artistic skills and keen eye for details are awesome. She is an honest person and anyo
ne working with her will be happy with the results !"
