It was my first lesson and now I have some idea how hold the violin and the bow. My homework is to practice a few notes on each string and then to practice playing the A scale. I think I can do it in two octaves. What is challenging is to play the scale without hearing a screeching sound. I'm looking forward to playing like Sarah Chang (hopefully after five lessons).

About Vincent
I have taught for 18 years, giving both private and group lessons. I am a professional musician, having played in numerous bands, recorded and played shows. I have taugh all ages, and all elvels, and all styles. I play a number of instruments including piano, guitar, bass, violin, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica, in addition to writing and singing. I took private lessons for over 10 years, and also studied music in both high school and college.

*** Lesson Details ***
A student can expect to be treated with respect, and have a lesson tailored around their abilities, interests, and amount of practice time. I make the lessons fun but also informative. I try to get to know my students so that they feel comfortable. I am laid back, but also determined that a student practice well, and learn not only the instrument but music fundamentals a
s well. I try to show students that learning music is a lifelong pursuit that can provide all types of fun and personal fulfillment, in addition to being a potential career and social outlet. After 3-6 months, the student will be playing songs, good ones, not just scales. They will also have learned basics, such as chords and scales, as well as sight reading.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Basement converted into music studio with instruments, and piano and keyboard. Parents can sit in on lessons. Street parking available.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide all lesson materials, listening examples, and, on occassion, an instrument. I often use my laptop to play songs and tutorials for students (who don't buy records like we did in the old days.) Generally, students must provide instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I tailor my lessons based on three factors: a student's interests, their ability, and their amount of practice time. I do not use a cookie cutter method of teaching because each student is different. I have studied, formally and informally, rock, pop, blues, jazz and classical. My specialties are rock and blues. On occasion, I will use method books, such as the Schirmer books for piano, but only if the student clearly seems to benefiting from them.

I teach violin at the New School for Leadership and the Arts, mostly to novice players, and I have experience teaching violin to children of all ages.

My primary instrument is guitar, which I've played for about 25 years in many different bands, styles, and genres. I studied music and classical guitar at University of Central Florida, and during that time I also helped teach violin to a class of third graders. I'm not a pro violinist, but I have plenty of experience working with novice players, helping them develop proper technique, sight reading, ear training, and other skills needed to advance to the next level.

About Gio
I studied music at UCF (Orlando), focusing on classical and jazz guitar, but I also have years of experience playing rock, blues, folk, hip-hop, and musical theater on both guitar and drums.

I have been teaching guitar, drums, and piano for about eight years to students of all ages. Music is what I'm passionate about and it's what I enjoy. I want to inspire that same passion into the hearts and minds of others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back teacher, fun, and I focus on the needs, abilities, and ambitions of the student. In turn, students must realize that learning an instrument takes a lot of work and dedication. One can't expect to learn very much if s/he only practices or thinks about the instrument during the lesson. If the student is willing to put some time into practicing, then I will help them go far!

*** Studi
o Equipment ***
I have several guitars, a drum kit, djembe, mandolin, clarinet and full-size keyboard.

*** Specialties ***
Guitar: Classical, jazz, American or Irish folk, rock and pop; lead or rhythm.
Drums & Percussion: All genres
Piano: Classical (includes sight reading)

My name is Sarah and I am a violinist and violin teacher with both a Bachelors and Masters from The Juilliard School. My studio includes students of all levels, ranging from 4-45 years old.

I teach a Suzuki based method for beginners which include games, songs, and a strong technical foundation. While learning how to play and sing the rhythms and notes by ear, students also learn to read and write music notes and rhythms by writing, reading, and dancing their own compositions.

My intermediate and advanced students learn a combination of the Russian/Delay methods, both of which I have taught and spent the last 25 years crafting into my own technique and teaching philosophy.

Additionally, I encourage my students to meet, learn, and play with other young musicians. My students can be heard throughout the Interschool Orchestras of New York.

About Sarah
As an active soloist and orchestral musician, Sarah has performed with orchestras such as the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Brockton Philharmonic, and such esteemed ensembles as New York Classical Players, the Poisson Rouge Ensemble, Shattered Glass, and The Moirae Ensemble. She was recently named Laureate of The Mozarteum Summerakademie for her performance of Lera Auerbach's T'filah.

Sarah began her solo career in 2005 with the Lowell Philharmonic Orchestra, and has since enjoyed performances with the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Brockton Symphony and Quincy Symphony Orchestra, and frequent appearances with the Lowell and Waltham Philharmonic Orchestras.

As an orchestral musician, Sarah was Concertmaster of the Juilliard Orchestra, as well as a member of Axiom Ensemble and The New Juilliard Ensemble. With her ensembles, she has wo
rked with innovative composers such as Steve Reich, John Adams, and Richard Danielpour. Sarah has been invited to perform at Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall in Boston, Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Carnegie Hall, and many other concert venues in the New York Tri-State and New England areas.

Sarah is the violinist for The Moirae Ensemble, with whom she joined in 2013. She has since performed solo and collaborative recitals with the group in New York and Boston, featuring contemporary female composers. Sarah looks forward to returning with The Moirae Ensemble in the 2014-15 season and eagerly anticipates joining Barnard College's award winning concert series in the 2014-15 season.

Sarah also regularly performs and records with rock groups such as Jesse Malin, Pete Pigeon, Quentin Angus, Shsha, and her own bands, American Dream and Uzi & Ari, with whom she is releasing a much anticipated fifth album in 2015.

Sarah received her Bachelor and Masters of Music from The Juilliard School as a student of Joel Smirnoff and Glenn Dicterow.

I give a rounded curriculum that is based on the students interests. If you like pop, we'll play pop melodies. If you like classical, we'll play classical. While learning these songs and melodies I incorporate techniques and theory that will help the student become a more advanced player, reader, and performer.

About Ian
Hi, I'm Ian, a 23 year old music major who just completed his B.A. At Hunter College. I try and play as many instruments as possible to expand my musical repertoire, but I am the most well versed in violin and guitar. I've been playing violin for 14 years and guitar for 9. I am involved in a number of musical projects and bands including my own, Cicero & the Orations. I also have a good knowledge of theory and have taken all but two of Hunters offered theory classes. I am currently a lessons instructor at a corporate site but I am always looking to teach music, since it's what I want to do with my life. I am quite patient with students and am always looking to take as much time as is needed for the student to learn whatever will better them.

Ian's patience and knowledge of many types of music is awesome! He takes a very empathetic approach to teaching; he tailors what knowledge he shares and what instructional techniques he employs based on my learning style and past experiences. If your looking for a kind, down to earth teacher who's not elitist when it comes to teaching anything from classical violin to rock guitar, Ian's the guy.

My violin and viola students study classical Russian technique--used by the best players in history. It involves efficient use of the body, both to avoid injury when playing and also to get the best possible sound from the instrument. Students progress in technique, musicality, and music theory.

About Elana
Hello,

My name is Elana. I'm a professional violinist and enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels. My students have ranged from ages 4-64. Their goals have ranged from pure enjoyment to those considering a career in music. My goal is to help each student play to the best of their abilities and for them to enjoy the lessons. Violin is my passion, which comes through in my enthusiasm during lessons. I am gentle and patient but also honest and very particular about what to look for when practicing.

I take great pride in teaching the Russian method. Not only is the technique I teach used by the best violinists of all time, it also emphasizes efficient and correct use of the body to avoid injury and develop a tone with richness and projection.

What I look for in a student is a commitment to practicing every day. It's an
adjustment in the beginning for many, but once established simply becomes part of the day, like brushing your teeth. Over time, students hear improvements from practicing consistently and this creates a very positive experience. The violin becomes a source of joy and confidence.

Violin lessons help develop skills such as coordination and focus at the highest level, persistence, confidence, creativity, patience, and many other "life" skills whose benefits extend far beyond music lessons. Many people who achieve success in a career outside music later in life often credit their music lessons as having been key in that process.

As far as my musical background, I received my music degree from Rutgers University, where I was a recipient of the Marryott Music Scholarship. Upon graduation I freelanced as a violinist in the NYC metro area. My major teachers include Neil Weintrob and Lewis Kaplan.

As a teacher I have 20 years of experience. I've worked in various programs and currently teach violin and viola lessons at a local private school, in addition to running a private studio of violin and piano students. My violin students have been concertmaster, principal players, and section players in orchestras such as All-County, Region I, and NY Youth Symphony.

Feel free to contact me with any additional questions you may have. I look forward to working with you.

Tuning into the very heart of what you need, my lessons are an academic, yoga, and therapy session all in one. Music comes from within so we discover how our bodies hold and can move the instrument and as well how our inner self comes through the instrument and transcends simply playing the violin. I have successful beginners as well as students that have aged out of beginner-hood and into intermediacy and are quite the solid players. My advanced players, too, find new discovery every session. I focus on quality of sound and ease of play over quantity of pieces and fake virtuosity. Understanding at all times that everyone is unique, I tune my lessons to you.

About Annette
Southern raised and classically trained, Annette has been playing violin since the age of 5 and has been performing publicly and recording since the age of 8. She has been teaching Violin, Viola and Cello in the lower Westchester, NY area for the past four years. In that time she has been on staff as a Teaching Fellow at the prestigious Interlochen Fine Arts Camp as well as performing in the recording studio for various solo artists and bands because of her varied interests in both classical and contemporary [or country/bluegrass] music styles. She studied Suzuki Pedagogy as well as NYSSMA and Royal Conservatory standards for stringed instrument instruction and is able to teach the method preferred by the student/parent. She is able to blend methods for the widest range of instruction for the benefit of her students. She received her
undergraduate degree from the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and her Master's Degree from SUNY Purchase College Conservatory of Music, two staunchly different schools of study which has given her background in music standards and stage performance the diversity not matched anywhere else.

I am a patient teacher, and passionate about teaching music. There are many aspects on learning how to play the violin. I focus on the sound a lot, so it will be a very short or almost to none screeching time when they play. To produce good sound, posture is number one thing. I like to build a student from a solid ground, so correct posture, right hand, left hand position, violin holding, and the whole body posture are all little pieces can make big differences in violin playing. By doing so, can make playing much easier, sounding beautiful, and make hard passages easier! And the correct posture will also help prevent the possibility from getting playing related injuries. I believe having inspiration is important too, listening to different music and great players can develop the ears, and also is a hugh inspiration to practice.

Introduction to Violin Music Notes
The violin is often considered by musicians to be one of the most challenging instruments to learn. Its roots trace back many centuries and it was clearly a definitive instrument in shaping classical music all over the world. One of the reasons it is considered a difficult instrument to learn is that it's a fretless string instrument, making violin music notes appear to be inexact, yet fingering must still be done with precision.
