About Alison
Thank you for visiting my profile!

As a professional musician, I have played in various ensembles including orchestras, opera companies, wind ensembles, chamber groups, musicals and more. The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra (BCCO), presenting 3-5 concerts a year, has been my orchestral home since 2013 and I have had the privilege of playing principal oboe with them all throughout.

As a music educator I have years of experience teaching privately and in classrooms, for individuals and groups. I craft lessons to the needs and interests of each student, to ensure they are getting the most out of our time together. Many of my students enjoy, for example, video game and TV show music - so, these pieces are some of the repertoire we'll work on together. My goals as a teacher are to instill proper playing technique, guide how to
shape the music, establish good practice habits, and above all find ways to connect students with the music they're studying. At the end of the day, we play music because it's fun!

About Nicole
Welcome! Thank you for visiting my page.

I am a professional opera singer and native New Yorker. I am so excited to reach out to new and continuing students in NYC - for both voice and piano study at all levels from age 5/6 and up.

I am an active performer and I love to share my passions and knowledge with my students. I have 13+ years of individual one-on-one voice and piano teaching experience with students of all ages and abilities.

What sets me apart from the other teachers here at TakeLessons?

I bring a special warmth, dedication, wisdom, and commitment to our work. Lessons are not solely about technique or making good sounds, but about communicating musically in a more meaningful way, and unleashing your unique gifts.

Primarily, I focus on classical/opera/musical theatre repertoire with my voice students. For stude
nts age 12-18, I emphasize a combination of folk songs, Disney, a limited selected pop music, and more. Ages 5-11 I use a combination of vocal method books for very young singers in addition to selected musical theatre and Disney songs.

My voice students have performed on and off Broadway, been nominated for NJ Paper Mill Playhouse's Rising Star Awards, have been accepted to pre-college musical theater programs on full scholarship, have earned multiple leading roles in high school musicals and plays, have performed major choral works at Carnegie Hall, have sung in church choirs and for weddings, and have released their own pop/rock albums.

I look forward to the pleasure of meeting and working with you!

Piano Lesson Details:
We will primarily use Bastien method books, Faber Piano Adventures, Dozen A Day, and other supplemental material according to age and level of the student. Musicianship and theory skills are explored and nurtured in addition to acquiring a foundation of technique at the piano.

Voice Lesson Details:
You will explore, re-awaken and nourish your creativity in music. Develop a solid foundation in vocal technique through effective tools and exercises based in the Bel Canto tradition (addressing breath, posture, alignment, an open throat, phonation, resonance, articulation, registration)

Address your personal practice/performance goals. Deepen self-awareness (body, aural, and emotional awareness), musicianship, interpretation, performance, and musicality

Learn a variety of repertoire, according to your needs and development

Cultivate your artistry for application in practice, audition, and performance settings

-Experience JOY in singing

Regardless of age or skill level, I approach students with respect and professionalism within a safe and supportive environment, fostering enlightenment and creativity.

We will take your vocal study at your own pace through a personalized, holistic approach that will help you sing easily and beautifully. I can't wait for you to join me!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio: Piano/keyboard 88 keys, open space, full length mirror.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide a piano or keyboard, music stand if possible, and a mirror (full length if possible.)

*** Specialties ***
I emphasize a variety of holistic methods that serve the student in multiple ways: physical, emotional, aural awareness; posture and alignment; low-centered/connected breathing, breath compression; open throat, released tongue/jaw; legato line, phrasing; articulation, diction, style, artistry; the process of learning a piece of music. Genres: Classical, Musical Theatre, Pop. I enjoy helping students to prepare for auditions and performances, as well as explore the art of singing and encourage the joy of singing.

I am a professional opera singer and voice instructor in New York City. I have an opera, musical theater, church and choral background. I am comfortable teaching all styles of music.

Our singing voice is the instrument that we were each born to play. My goal is to make singing effortless and enjoyable and to help my students build confidence in themselves by developing their instrument.

Together we will work on breathing, speaking and vocal exercises as well as appropriate repertoire singing with beautiful Italian vowels, free of tension and with emphasis on emotional purpose.

It would be my pleasure to work with my students on basic music theory. I can also help students prepare their voices for public speaking engagements.

Two years later, in 2016, he won the First Prize at the American Proteges International Concerto Competition. Other achievements include a Gold Medal at the Young Classical Virtuoso International Piano Competition. Brian was also a finalist at the First VIVO-S International Music Competition in 2017.

The reason I came to Mr. Brian: I wasn't making any progress under my previous teacher at a local music school. I'd say I absolutely have made the right decision to study with him! At first, my parents thought Mr. Brian's piano lessons are a bit expensive, but they let me try out the first few lessons. Worth the price! I have stayed with him for almost 4 years. He is so passionate with piano and he always tries to push me to my fullest potential, even when certain pieces seem impossible for me to tackle. We are working on a 45 min college audition program; I have never imagined I could make it this far (I hated piano when I was a kid).

Mr. Brian has prepped me well for performances. I have learned a lot from him. He is very passionate about music and he really taught me how to express myself through piano playing. I am a very shy person and have stage fright. My parents think I have advanced a lot under Brian's tutelage. I highly recommend him. A great friend, mentor and an amazing pianist!

He had been my piano teacher and mentor for 5+years. Equipped with marvelous knowledge and meticulousness on music and piano performance, he is capable and willing to uphold his professionalism. He is not going to move on until you have mastered certain fundamental musical ideations or techniques. Mr. Brian is not the type of teacher who only talks in theory or with instructions, but he can actually perform what he demands from students. Hence, he is doubtlessly a marvelous piano performer, as well as instructor, where I am certain students can learn a lot from his lessons.

When I started playing Jazz there was hardly any reliable resource available
to teach me where I grew up. Through a vast experience both as a professional pianist/keyboardist and teacher, I have created a system of learning that saves students countless hours of wrong practice and frustration understanding the theory side. Many times before the end of a semester at the Jazz College where I teach I tell my students that my course syllabus can be summarized in 2 words: Applied, Theory.
Those concepts connected when taught and applied to
students through an efficient system of enjoyable practice lead to students playing Jazz sometimes in 3-6 months!

Take lessons with a Broadway veteran!

I've been teaching private voice and acting coaching for over 5 years and LOVE seeing my students improve! I am a working singer/actor, and writer/musician in NYC, but I love teaching so much that I do it even while I'm working on projects!

A little bit about me:
I graduated from University of Michigan's musical theatre program (one of the top musical theatre programs in the world!) and went straight into playing Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAID at Chicago Shakespeare theatre, and then directly on to playing the lead in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on Broadway for several years! I also recently returned from China, where I played Scarlett O'Hara in the musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND!

I've trained in all kinds of different techniques and currently have all different types of students and voices in my s
tudio! I teach all levels and ages, from beginners to professionals, and a wide variety of different of styles (Broadway, opera, pop, singer-songwriter, and many more). Together, we'll find the right techniques for your voice, and the concepts that click for you and make your voice soar! Now, any voice teacher worth their salt will be able to work on your technique with you, BUT in MY studio, we will go farther than that! Not only will your technique improve rapidly, but we will work on telling the story, and performing the song. Two major components that often get forgotten! And most importantly, we'll have fun while doing it!

Whether you're looking to push your audition technique over the top and BOOK that role, or NAIL that college audition, or if you're just looking to have some fun while singing, together we can make it happen!

My daughter dreams of being a professional actor/singer, and Rachel is both the best teacher and role model we could hope for! Rachel helps her with her vocal technique, helps her choose songs that are age appropriate but that enable her to expand her repertoire, and I am absolutely amazed at how much she has learned about acting and character/script analysis. My daughter eagerly does her "Rachel homework" each week :) Rachel also gives her great advice about auditioning, college, and the industry in general. She is truly a wealth of knowledge and talent! We were fortunate to see Rachel perform as Christine Daae in a performance of Phantom of the Opera (my daughter's favorite musical and dream role), and we were absolutely floored by her performance! We are so grateful that our daughter has the opportunity to train with an incredibly talented, enthusiastic artist and teacher. Thank you, Rachel!

My daughter is very serious about having a career in musical theater someday and she really appreciates how compassionate and dedicated Rachel is to making her a better singer. After many talks with my daughter, I can tell you Rachel has a great sense of humor, great knowledge, wisdom, industry insight and she is very caring. You could not find a better teacher! My daughter plans to keep taking lessons from Rachel for a long time. Don't walk, RUN to get your lessons with her! She is that awesome!
