I can help beginning students on oboe learn the basics.
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.
Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.
He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.
Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.
*** Lesson Details *** My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.
I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.
For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.
My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.
Thomas is honestly an amazing musician and teacher. He was really patient with me. Despite having to deal with major timezone differences (as I live in Myanmar), he took the time to figure it out. Also, he helped me figure out the stuff it took me months to figure out. He also really knows what he's doing. I learned so much in that hour of practice. 10/10 would recommend him.

Fabulous! What a great teacher! And SO KNOWLEDGEABLE about all kinds of music! THANKS! looking forward to all my lessons!
I teach beginner oboe. I can help students learn to read music, play with good tone and technique, learn fingerings, and play from a book or school band music.
I've been teaching private lessons for over 15 years. I was a high school music teacher & band director in the Philadelphia area for 7 years, and I now live in Miami, FL where I am working on a doctoral degree in conducting. I also work as a freelance musician. I'm looking forward to making music with you!
Your lesson specifics are up to you! If you know what you want to learn, I'll help get you there. If you don't know where to start, I can lead you through the fundamentals and help you set goals.
I like to keep things positive in music lessons. Music is, after all, for fun and enjoyment! I like to blend teaching technique and musicianship, while keeping things fun.
If you're a beginner, we'll get started with all the fundamentals you need to begin making music. If you've been playing for a while, I'll help you perfect
things you've been working on, expand your musical experience, and help you reach your fullest potential as a musician.
Online lessons are a wonderful option! I am flexible with scheduling and allow changes up to 24-hours before a scheduled lesson. My home studio has chairs, music stand, and areas for parents to sit in on lessons. Garage band is available for recording. Students need an instrument and books.
Tina has provided our daughter 11 year old daughter with outstanding lessons as a beginning trumpet player this past summer! Not only was our daughter able to skip beginning band and be placed into the more advance concert band with the 1st trumpets, she received an invite from her well known director of bands to participate in the school’s Big Band. Our daughter is quickly improving on her playing skills.
Tina will always be remembered as the primary influence behind her aspirations to play the trumpet the right way!
I started teaching oboe while finishing my bachelor's degree, and have found it to be incredibly rewarding. I love sharing my knowledge, helping my students advance and find even greater enjoyment playing. I feel very fortunate because as a regularly performing musician, I have the opportunity to immerse myself in many styles of music. Though it is incredibly important to learn the basics of oboe, and to become educated in the classics, expanding one's pallet with pop, jazz and world-music, for example, may also come into play.
During lessons we'll focus on technique building exercises, pieces from the standard oboe repertoire, and will often play duets together. If you are in school and would like to bring your band/orchestra music to lessons, feel free!
Since reeds are such an important part of being an oboe player, I teach reed adjustments for students playing at an intermediate level, and for advanced students, reed making from scratch.
My philosophy is that music is ...
Thank you for visiting my profile!
As a professional musician, I have played in various ensembles including orchestras, opera companies, wind ensembles, chamber groups, musicals and more. The Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra (BCCO), presenting 3-5 concerts a year, has been my orchestral home since 2013 and I have had the privilege of playing principal oboe with them all throughout.
As a music educator I have years of experience teaching privately and in classrooms, for individuals and groups. I craft lessons to the needs and interests of each student, to ensure they are getting the most out of our time together. Many of my students enjoy, for example, video game and TV show music - so, these pieces are some of the repertoire we'll work on together. My goals as a teacher are to instill proper playing technique, guide how to
shape the music, establish good practice habits, and above all find ways to connect students with the music they're studying. At the end of the day, we play music because it's fun!

Rina transformed a septuagenarn with very little vocal experience into a much more confident and capable vocalist...in only five 1hr lessons. I plan to continue with Rina because learning with her is fun and although I have learned a lot I want to absorb more of what she is capable of teaching me.
With 10 years of teaching experience, I specialize in working with students of all ages and abilities. Lessons incorporate music theory, technique, and lyrical expression. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!
I hold a Master's Degree in Oboe Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. During my studies I studied with Carolyn Hove and Humbert Lucarelli.
Grace has extensive experience teaching private and group lessons, including lessons in Piano, English Horn and reed making. Her students have gone on to win scholarships and place in honor orchestras. Currently, her students hold the top spots in nTyme's (North Torrance Youth Musicians Ensemble) Chamber Orchestra, as well as Honor Bands and Youth Orchestra across the country.
Locally, Grace has performed with the Dana Point Symphony, Symphony Irvine, as well as other groups around Southern California. Previously, she was a long time member of the Cheshire Symphony.
Whether you choose to take lessons online or in your home, I strive to make each lesson engaging, informative, and fun! Students are expected to practice in-between lessons and come to lessons prepared with their instrument and music. I also encourage students to bring
any music that they're interested in learning to their lessons.
**Every Other Week Lessons** Due to current lesson demand, I'm not able to accept new students interested in every other week lessons. The only exception will be if you are able to fill the off week of a current every other week student. Please contact me before booking lessons for a current list of available spots. Spots are available on a first come, first come basis, and are subject to change at any time. This applies to requests for both online and in-person lessons.
**Group Lessons** I don't offer traditional group lessons, as I've found they slow down the progress of both students and therefore aren't cost effective. Arrangements can be made for back to back lessons instead. Please contact me before booking lessons.
Please feel free to ask me any questions you may have, and I can't wait to meet you!

I am a professional oboist with forty years teaching experience as well as a DMA degree. I help students learn to play the oboe with a beautiful sound, a complete, effective technique, and a feeling of ease while performing. Because of my outstanding teaching ability and extensive experience, I am able to show students how to really master the challenging areas of oboe playing, such as embouchure, breath support, articulation and reeds. I also work with students on developing their unique qualities as creative musicians, through an understanding of phrasing, note grouping and experience of improvisation.
As a professional oboist, I have performed with the Bach Aria Group, Lazar Gosman's Tchaikovsky Orchestra, and the Manhatten Chamber Orchestra and Choir of Sacred Music. I am currently a member of the North Shore Pro Musica chamber music group and the Phoenix Trio. During the past forty-five years, I have free lanced in the New York metropolitan area and in Boston, including performances of symphonies, operas, Bach cantatas and chamber music works. I can be heard playing the English horn and the duduk (Armenian oboe) with David Darling and the Adagio Ensemble on the CD "In Tune", released by The Relaxation Company and the oboe and duduk with the improvisation group "Hidden City", on the CD "Another Country". I have also released a CD of original solo duduk music titled "Duduk Creations", which is available on Amazon and cdbaby.
a graduate of the Musicianship and Leadership program with Music For People, an organization devoted to music improvisation. For the past ten years, I have led improvisation workshops at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. I am also the director of the Adult Chamber Music Program at SUNYSB.

I received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1975 and attended Amherst College from 1970 to 1972.
I find both oboe playing and teaching to be deeply inspiring. I feel that playing music is one of life's most wonderful experiences. It's uplifting and meaningful to me when my students improve and play beautifully.
Experienced teacher of 5 years! I love teaching oboe and reed-making! I've taught all levels of oboe students, from absolute beginner to high school seniors. I keep lessons fun and go at whatever pace the student prefers. My aim is to make music enjoyable and rewarding through achieving specific goals and having fun. I have a thorough, though flexible, curriculum to help my students achieve their goals, master the oboe, learn repertoire, and love music.
I am a professional oboist, teacher, and reed-maker in the Manhattan area. In recent months, I've played with the Manhattan Opera Studio, New York City Master Chorale, and New York Repertory Orchestra, to name a few. As a performer, I have played in many large venues across America and South East Asia. Recently, I was invited to give a recital at the International Double Reed Convention in Tampa Florida. For the Summer of 2017, I was an instructional oboe intern at the Vietnam National Academy of Music, where I performed and gave private lessons and masterclasses to the school's pre-college division oboists. Since 2014, my private studio has achieved Superior scores in regional and state solo & ensemble competitions and placement in various honor ensembles. In lessons, we will cover technique, repertoire, injury prevention, breath support, tone, and music history along with many other topics. Additionally, I love teaching reed making to all levels of students who are interested.
I feel completely at home teaching all levels, from absolute beginner to pre-college level players.
"My daughter has enjoyed her lessons. Alyssa has recognized and gently corrected many of the bad habits that she has picked up in band. I noticed a dramati
c improvement after just a few lessons."
"Clare is incredibly easy to work with and is a great teacher. She really takes the time to get to know her students and can explain topics in a way that e
veryone can understand. She also makes fantastic reeds."
"I love how I run into a problem and Bonnie helps me try to fix what happened. Bonnie not only helps me play but she allows me to play at my own pace. I hi
ghly recomend Bonnie for a teacher she has helped so much and I think she could help amyone with playing the instrument they love."
"First online experience with Grace was very positive."
"Ms. Small was very nice and helpful :)"
"It was excellent! Thomas is very good and I learned a lot. I thank you very much! I appreciate it very much! 😊"
"Grace was on-the-dot punctual, and had me play what I could for her. Right away she locked in on my intonation, which I have been having problems with.
She asked several questions, which was a good thing. She followed up with a printed list of things for me to work on. All this was done with a pleasant gentleness which has me looking forward to the next lesson."
"My daughter had a great learning session with Bonnie! What a great start! Thank you!"
"Best instructor every, lots of patience, has given terrific confidence. Am now playing Oboe as intermediate in 4 months."
