*** Lesson Details *** In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 4 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students’ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one’s creativity.
With over a decade of teaching and a doctorate in flute performance, I have extensive experience teaching flute lessons and recorder lessons to students from beginners to advanced. My daughter takes guitar from Maria and I didn’t realize how much she’s progressed until we went to a friend’s recital. 8 months with Maria and my child is leaps and bounds ahead of kids who’ve been taking for 2-3 years. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:
1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.
2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.
3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.
It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.
I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.
Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.
Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.
We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!
The first lesson was successful. My particular background in piano is unique, and my needs are atypical as well. I thought Thomas assessed my abilities, lack of abilities, and goals well and quickly. He started me on a different perspective on looking at music (reading the staff) that seems very helpful. I'm encouraged.

Composition and Arrangement - To date I have helped my students write over 20 compositions of widely varying styles and characters. Music Theory - I I have taught music theory for 4 years to over 50 students. I can teach you everything from music theory fundamentals (key signatures, scales, major/minor chords, chord analysis) to some of the most advanced topics in undergraduate and graduate musical studies (form, part-writing, counterpoint, advanced harmonic analysis, Schenkerian analysis).
Ear Training - I have taught ear training for 3 years to over 50 students. I am very experienced in assisting students in recognizing and notating everything from single notes and chords to complex passages of music. I have many useful learning materials and know effective methods for achieving aural recognition.

At a young age, pianist Alexandra Sjobeck’s distinctly captivating style led her to move from Idaho to New York to immerse herself in New York City’s jazz scene. Her unique sound is comprised of a voice all her own which relies on nuanced intricacies in both her arrangements and improvisation paired with familiarity, whether from pop music, world music, or from jazz greats including McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, and Herbie Hancock. One of her regular sidemen summarized it as “the combination of Post-Impressionistic painting, a jigsaw puzzle, childhood, and groove.” During her time in New York, she studied with some of the top jazz artists in the world and obtained a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the Manhattan School of Music. More recently, she completed her Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Colorado as
a teaching assistant. Throughout the last two years she has been actively performing with the nationally touring trio SBST as well as the Sjobeck Baker Duo and has played at venues such as The Velvet Note in Atlanta, Georgia and Dazzle in Denver, Colorado. Beyond her performance career, she has had her hand at a variety of other projects including: recording three albums as leader and co-leader, composing the music for a short film, conducting and debuting an original big band arrangement at a University of Northern Colorado concert, teaching jazz ensemble classes, and presenting workshops and masterclasses in Colorado, Georgia, and Idaho.

Alex is very patient and able to adapt to her students. I studied with her for a year and also got to see other students work with her and she always had a way of getting each student to accomplish their goals. I think when you look for a teacher, you really are looking for someone to teach you how to learn. So many teachers tell you something or tell you what to do but never help you develop a skillset. Alex is different in that she absolutely focuses on developing a fundamental process so that each student not only learns but knows how to learn. As a result, there is progress I can see immediately, of course, but also years down the road.
