Nick coached my daughter, Ann, through her South Bay Teen Idol Competition, in which she was a finalist. Ann was competing against singers with more years of experience, but the superior quality of Nick's instruction enabled her to be competitive.
I have worked with a number of Broadway performers, helping them find dynamic and compelling ways of fine tuning their performances.
I have been a voice, acting, and teacher of creative arts for over 25 years. My background includes ten years of classical voice training with Maestro Julio Berrocal, as well as vocal training through the Feldenkrais approach with Marcy Lindhiemer. In acting, I have studied with renowned Stanislavsky scholar Sonia Moore and Master acting teacher of the Strasberg Method, Marcia Haufrecht. I received a B.A. For comparative literature and creative writing at the State University of New York at Purchase and have recently completed my Master's degree in social work at Walden University. I believe, within all of us, Is the ability to express something distinctive and original. I work to help students discover their unique voice, whether it be through singing, acting, or writing. I share with my students an array of tools to gain the ability
and confidence to achieve their goals. I empathize deeply with the challenges students may face when pursuing a life in the creative and performing arts, having worked professionally in those areas for most of my adult life. I believe it is the teacher's job to respect each student's individual process of learning. My students have gone on to become recording artists, Broadway performers, movie actors, Blues and cabaret artists, and published writers.
*** Lesson Details *** Voice I am an empathetic teacher, sensitive to the student's individual process of learning. My singing lessons usually start with breathing and relaxation exercises. Vocal technique exercises come next. When the student is fully warmed up, we will begin to work on songs. It is important that students be a part of the process of picking material since the more personally they respond to the material the more apt they are to become engaged in their lessons. After three to six months beginning students will have gained an understanding of the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation, and basic performance skills. With more advanced students the focus will be on range extension and the on-going development of vocal style through song interpretation and performance related exercises. Acting As an acting teacher and coach, I tailor my classes to the needs of each student. I utilize improvisatory and sensory techniques to help unleash spontaneity. I also encourage the students to use their personal experiences as a way to access a full range of emotions. I enjoy working with the student on script analysis, so as to discover the underlying motivations of the character the student is working on. Creative and Lyric Writing I use prompts as a way to get the student writing. Often, I will ask the student to write for stretches of time without editing themselves. It is important to unleash imagination before beginning the process of editing. Many times it is the unexpected that is the most compelling.
*** Studio Equipment *** home- 10 minutes away from Manhattan with piano, seating for parents -practice studio seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment *** I provide a piano, cd/mp3 player and an large library of songbooks to work from. The student should bring sheet music of songs they want to work on and a recording device.
*** Specialties *** I specialize in teaching how to sing rock, pop, musical theater, jazz, cabaret, and blues without hurting the voice as well as method acting instruction.
A very good first lesson. We went over breathing exercises and scales. Also had time for Amy to critique my speaking style through a portion of a speech I will be giving in a month. Time well-spent.
She briefly went over the next lesson plan and gave me a little homework to do as well.
I got a lot out of this lesson and I can see how this will help me accomplish my goal of being a better public speaker and having a more controlled and stronger voice.
Looking forward to future lessons.

Patient. Gifted Teacher!
June 23, 2019
Amy is absolutely incredible. She showed keen interest in my concerns and challenges. She listened and knew exactly what I needed to do to get to where I want to be. She makes it easy for me to understand and she is truly a great coach. I can’t wait to see her again.
The mission of my studio is to create well-rounded, educated musicians who will always have a lifelong passion for the art no matter their long-term goals. I strive for my students to be:
(1) Lifelong learners who develop successful learning habits. (2) Creative and critical thinkers who will become effective communicators. (3) Responsible and respectful members of society who respect other cultures. (4) Able to set short-term and long-term goals and be able to see them through to their success.
It is of the utmost importance that my students are well-educated in their chosen instrument; they must know and understand music and music-making. Students who can play are a dime a dozen, but students who understand the music they are playing are often hard to find. I teach students to kno
w music thoroughly, not just to “play.” I desire my students to comprehend elements of the score, to use their bodies effectively to make good sound, and to interpret music creatively and according to historical performance practices across all genres of music. Thus, I give students a purposeful education in technique, quality literature, performance and artistry, music theory, and music history.
Although students differ in ability and development, I maintain high expectations for our students. I expect attention and respect in lessons, faithful and diligent practice, careful adherence to instructions, and an “I’ll-do-my-best” attitude. If students regularly meet these expectations, then they will excel to the level that they are able. It is my joy to help students master their music, to do the best they can, and to strive for and achieve excellence.
Lastly, I want students to enjoy and appreciate their instrument, music, and music-making; and I know as as a teacher, I am very influential in making this happen. Students develop enjoyment of music by understanding music, experiencing success in music, being exposed to good and varied genres of music, and receiving instruction from a teacher who is enthusiastic and encouraging. It is my goal to provide all of these opportunities for students, and as a result their lives will be enriched as they enjoy their instrument.
My daughter takes guitar from Maria and I didn’t realize how much she’s progressed until we went to a friend’s recital. 8 months with Maria and my child is leaps and bounds ahead of kids who’ve been taking for 2-3 years. It’s really motivating for her to see. Maria has standards which are non-negotiable but she’s patient and truly guides the kids to success. I’m so happy with our choice as her as a teacher.
June 6, 2019
Maria has been wonderful with our son. Very motivating and goal based. The recitals blow me away year after year. The progress these kids make with her plus the longevity of her students says a lot.
Beginning vocal training is one of this most exciting adventures you can take! My own musical journey has taken me performing from DC to Europe and Asia, to Princeton and NYC, and now back to the DC area! Having completed a Master of Music in Vocal Performance and Voice Teaching at the Westminster Choir College, I would love to take part in your vocal training! Learning how to sing Broadway style is a must have skill for anyone interested in singing musical theatre. This includes everything from classical technique to belt technique. In lessons for Broadway Singing, we can create the perfect program for your needs. Whether your goal is to sing professionally, or to learn how to sing in tune, I am your gal!
Thank you so much and I look forward to teaching you!
*Note* I'm only able to travel to give in-home lessons when the lesson duration is 45 mins or more.
Hi there! My name's Grace and I'm a voice teacher and a classically trained performer. I’ve been in the DC area for about 2 years now and am delighted to grow my voice studio! If you or your child loves to sing and would like to take your singing to the next level, feel confident as a soloist, or prepare for an audition, give yourself or your child a classical basis for how to healthfully sing. Now is the time! I have a varied background: I started out in musical theatre and choirs and now sing with orchestras, opera companies, and churches. I began teaching privately in college, then taught private lessons, before proceeding to the Westminster Choir College, where I received a Master of Music in Voice and Voice Teaching (formally Vocal Performance and Pedagogy.) Hope to meet you soon!
*Note* Due to the number of students I currently t
each, I no longer travel to student’s houses. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Grace is an amazing instructor. She has an expertise in singing and can guide your voice in the right direction, especially with her patient and positive way of teaching. She also personalizes the lessons very well and has you singing what you would like to sing and reach your goals!
December 13, 2017
Grace G. is always well prepared for lessons with my 10 year daughter. My daughter is in special education at school and Grace relates very well with her and has helped her focus and stay interested during her lessons. I would recommend Grace for childrens singing lessons.
Every lesson I teach is a unique and individual experience. I teach from a foundation based in the classical vocal style rooted in bel canto, however, I tailor every lesson to the student. I first determine what are the students goals and needs, and then we find the best approach for the student to learn. It is important that the student has a voice in what they sing, and how they learn; however, I will insist that they build a solid foundation to ensure that they become strong musicians who can sing in every genre if they choose, and can sing safely with vocal health as a number one priority.

I believe that all people are singers; singing and music are the most natural human forms. Every student is unique, and every voice is as unique as a fingerprint; that is why every student and lesson is approached with the individual needs and goals in mind.

I have taught acting and acting in many universities and professional theatre training programs on both sides of the Atlantic. I am currently a mentor for the New York Foundation for the Arts. I have led hundreds of workshops and individual classes where singers and actors have shed non-productive habits and built healthy expressive acting instruments and voices. I have taught actors from the Royal Shakespea

I am a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon and College at Purchase where I earned a BFA in acting. My post grad work was at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, UK. I teach students of all ages to "own" their own instruments as constantly developing artists whether it is acting or speaking or singing. I work out of my studio in the East Village in NYC, or in my home in Upsate, NY and online. I teach many different styles.

I have been a guest artist at Bowdoin College, Williams College and Harden-Simmons College.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you become a better artist!
It's an amazing feeling when you find someone who is a master at the craft and can teach it too!
Shauna's previous extensive theatre training and instruction is UNDENIABLE. Because of this, she brings much more to the table than the average acting coach.
She made me realize there's SO much more than just breaking down a scene and creating a character. She made me think about where the character is going physically as well as emotionally, and why. I continue to grow and improve with each lesson with her. I'm so lucky to have found Shauna, and strongly recommend her to all actors.

Shauna is an amazing teacher! With her tools and teaching techniques she guides you to the place where your voice is physically mentally and emotionally connected, able to work and produce results that every artist is seeking to accomplish-reaching the audience. She. Is kind, compassionate and makes you work hard all at the same time to get you to the place you need to be as an artist. Thank you Shauna! ♥️

Shauna is an absolutely incredible voice/acting teacher. She took the time to meet me where I was and encouraged me to be confident in the skills I already possessed. As a dancer, it is often scary to use your voice because it isn’t something we often exercise. Shauna helped me gain incredible knowledge in a new instrument. I was preparing for an important audition and with the tools she gave me I was able to have incredible success on a nearly impossible time constraint! I highly recommend Shauna for all levels :)
Ever dreamt of being on Broadway? Ever wanted to study with a Broadway star? Want to work on your technique? Have an audition (or College audition) coming up? Do you just love singing and want to do more of it?
Rachel is a Broadway veteran who teaches all ages and voice types. Rachel teaches different styles, including both classical and contemporary in both singing and acting. Whether it's Shakespeare, Opera, Musical Theatre, or anything in between!
Credits include: Christine on Broadway in Phantom of the Opera, Scarlett (original cast) on the international tour of Gone With The Wind, Ariel in The Little Mermaid, BFA MT from University of Michigan.
Take lessons with a Broadway veteran!
I've been teaching private voice and acting coaching for over 5 years and LOVE seeing my students improve! I am a working singer/actor, and writer/musician in NYC, but I love teaching so much that I do it even while I'm working on projects!
A little bit about me: I graduated from University of Michigan's musical theatre program (one of the top musical theatre programs in the world!) and went straight into playing Ariel in THE LITTLE MERMAID at Chicago Shakespeare theatre, and then directly on to playing the lead in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on Broadway for several years! I also recently returned from China, where I played Scarlett O'Hara in the musical version of GONE WITH THE WIND!
I've trained in all kinds of different techniques and currently have all different types of students and voices in my s
tudio! I teach all levels and ages, from beginners to professionals, and a wide variety of different of styles (Broadway, opera, pop, singer-songwriter, and many more). Together, we'll find the right techniques for your voice, and the concepts that click for you and make your voice soar! Now, any voice teacher worth their salt will be able to work on your technique with you, BUT in MY studio, we will go farther than that! Not only will your technique improve rapidly, but we will work on telling the story, and performing the song. Two major components that often get forgotten! And most importantly, we'll have fun while doing it!
Whether you're looking to push your audition technique over the top and BOOK that role, or NAIL that college audition, or if you're just looking to have some fun while singing, together we can make it happen!
My daughter dreams of being a professional actor/singer, and Rachel is both the best teacher and role model we could hope for! Rachel helps her with her vocal technique, helps her choose songs that are age appropriate but that enable her to expand her repertoire, and I am absolutely amazed at how much she has learned about acting and character/script analysis. My daughter eagerly does her "Rachel homework" each week :) Rachel also gives her great advice about auditioning, college, and the industry in general. She is truly a wealth of knowledge and talent! We were fortunate to see Rachel perform as Christine Daae in a performance of Phantom of the Opera (my daughter's favorite musical and dream role), and we were absolutely floored by her performance! We are so grateful that our daughter has the opportunity to train with an incredibly talented, enthusiastic artist and teacher. Thank you, Rachel!

Literally couldn’t ask for a better instructor. Honestly, she has been so patient with me since I have anxiety and I’m pretty shy in front of others. She has been nothing but supportive and I really can’t thank her enough for anything.

Rachel is a wonderful teacher! My daughter loves her lessons with Rachel! Rachel is very insightful and observant. She also has a wealth of knowledge on singing and musical theater. My daughter is very serious about having a career in musical theater someday and she really appreciates how compassionate and dedicated Rachel is to making her a better singer. After many talks with my daughter, I can tell you Rachel has a great sense of humor, great knowledge, wisdom, industry insight and she is very caring. You could not find a better teacher! My daughter plans to keep taking lessons from Rachel for a long time. Don't walk, RUN to get your lessons with her! She is that awesome!
