I teach hornists of all ages, and have been teaching privately for 6 years! I have a music education and horn performance background and teach based off the learning styles that best meet a student’s needs. I have experience with teaching young and mature beginners, elementary-high school, and college. I love helping students prepare for college auditions and exploring different options as to how music can be a part of their life. A unique process I love for teaching : using my students’ favorite song or artist to build fundamentals on the horn!

About Emily

I have been playing the horn for 11 years! I have an undergraduate degree in Horn performance and music education from the Eastman School of Music where I was also nominated for and won a Performance Certificate. I continued on to become the teaching assistant for the Pennsylvania State University

I began playing piano at the age of 3 1/2 by ear, listening to music of the 1960s such as The Beatles and Broadway musicals. When I was 15, I started 2 years of classical lessons, and, because my ear was so well developed, was given the opportunity to learn Fur Elise by Beethoven at my second lesson. I had begun teaching the piece to myself after hearing it played on a movie soundtrack. I began my studies at Berklee College of Music in 1979, taking jazz piano and vocal lessons, as well as classes in ear training, theory, and arranging, along with various ensembles and labs. Following my years at Berklee, I played in a number of different bands and had a record produced on which I wrote and sang 4 songs, arranged background vocals, and played piano. This recording received Northeast regional airplay and was one of the highlights of my musical career. I have been teaching piano in the Capital District of New York since 1997, with students ranging in age from 4 to 71, and of various ...

I took lessons with Mary Ann Barker for many years. I have learned many pieces with her, including Beethoven’s Für Elise and Piano Man by Billy Joel. She is a great teacher and I highly recommend taking lessons with her for anyone interested in learning piano.

My 2 10 years old boys have been studying piano for over 3 years. MaryAnn is a great teacher and fabulous with kids
Christine
I am 61 years old, work full-time and have limited time for practicing. I have had 2 previous piano teachers who do not compare to Mary Ann’s level of thoroughness and patience, and ability to diagnose an issue I am having, offering an easy fix, making learning to read music much easier. Most times, it’s a matter of slowing down, setting the metronome to a slower speed. She does not rush me. I “show up” and she encourages and teaches me to have fun.

"I’m about 5 or 6 lessons deep with Shauna and as a lifelong singer, she’s already helped immensely with correcting some bad habits I never realized I had — which is making for better performance with less effort! Highly recommended teacher, works at your pace, and the bonus is the breathing exercises she’s led me through each lesson, which completely change my day and are incredibly relaxing. Thanks so much Shauna!!"

"I am an older adult learner, just starting to learn violin with no musical background. Anna had good practical suggestions and regimented learning plan that should yield results. We used Skype for the on-line lesson and it was convenient enough and personal enough. I am in the desert South of Abu Dhabi, so violin teachers are hard to find and teachers of Anna's caliber are impossible to find."

It has been a real pleasure to have Phillip as a teacher. He is so positive and so encouraging. Although we've only just begun, Phillip has provided a good foundation (and the encouragement) to continue to experiment and improve my skills. Thank you, Phillip. I've really had fun working with you! (The next comment has nothing to do with Phillip, but I do find Skype lessons a bit awkward. But that's just me!)"

"My 12 year old, Jillian, has been taking at home piano lessons with Hannah for three months. Hannah quickly assessed Jillian skill set (she also takes guitar) and got her up and running on piano in no time. She is usually spot on with the music selections she picks for Jillian's ability and pre teen age. Hannah is always on time and has been gracious in facilitating any schedule changes.

Jillian has made good progress in piano, now if we could only get her to practice a bit more.
Thanks Hannah."

"Nabin helped me realize one of my dreams of being able to play Indian percussion instruments. Being an absolute beginner, helped with my instrument purchase and started me on the basic notes and rhythm patterns. Under his direction, I maintained steady practice habits and was able to progress quite well in a relatively short amount of time.

Nabin ji has a structured curriculum and overlays one simple concept on another to deal with complex topics. Time signatures in Indian music can be tricky and with Nabin’s help I was able to understand the nuances of many different taals over time.

The lessons and one-on-one interaction (pre-pandemic) were great. Material presented was simple and easy to understand and practice at home. Nabin ji certainly had the patience to deal with a complete beginner like me which really helped. :)"
