Improving one's skills in any area is exhilarating and rewarding, and it happens most quickly when the lessons and homework are paced just right for the student's level. As a teacher, I try to balance time spent on technique and foundation with time on creative, right-brained musical play.

I have experience in jazz, classical, flamenco, funk, Cuban music, pop music, and all kinds of other styles of music. Let me know if you have a particular interest in any genre or even a specific artist you'd like to emulate.

Besides teaching instrument playing techniques, music theory, and improvisation, I also spend time in lessons helping students find their own best practice. I believe it is possible to help students find a level of flow that is unparalleled when they condition themselves to practice with deep presence and awareness of their own state.

It brings me great joy to facilitate the incredible feeling of exhilaration that accompanies improving one's music skills.

About J.Q.

I studied jazz trumpet performance at Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelors, '02) and The Juilliard School (Masters '17). I studied Mandarin Chinese at Oberlin College (Bachelors, '02). I lived and worked in Shanghai, China, from 2003 to 2010. I've been teaching music and language lessons for over 15

I have literally looked for years for the right trumpet teacher for my 12 year old son. JQ is a treasure. He challenges the student appropriately but is also gentle and understanding about the realities of life for a 12 year old in NYC. Cannot recommend him highly enough. Very skilled teacher, performer, and totally on point with showing up, planning ahead, etc.
Joey
Fantastic trumpet instructor. JQ is patient, receptive, encouraging—the list goes on. He's helped me go from literally not being able to make a decent note to playing a little shindig on New Year's for my family. Highly recommended. I'm still taking lessons!
Sean
I found that J.Q. was a quality tutor. He adapted to what I needed to focus on for Mandarin, which was tones, and as such I was able to improve my foundation. He also has a good knowledge of the language apart from just being fluent, and could answer any question I had. I definitely recommend him.

*Brass teacher with 20 Years of performance and music education

Hello, and welcome to brass lessons!

My goal is to help you the learner feel empowered with resources, practice skills, and confidence enough to continue learning your instrument and reach the next level with or without help. I truly believe that anyone can learn to play an instrument!

Teaching, learning, and music are passions of mine! Whether you are a beginner who has never played an instrument before, or an experienced musician, I have experience with all levels and am thrilled to teach you.

Euphonium is my primary instrument, but I have experience teaching and performing on all of the brass instruments, and competed on a national level at the Leonard Falcone Festival two times!

I have taught instrumental music for 16 years in the public schools, and have taught privately for over 20 years. I have my bachelors in Music Education, and my masters in conducting.

About Anthony

Hi, I’m Teacher Tony, and I’m from Illinois, and I love teaching music! I started playing when I was 12, and music changed my life! I have taught music to people of all ages. I really enjoy teaching students who need a little encouragement and love helping them feel good about what they are doing.

One of the best teachers I've ever had. Teaches the whole person, not just the musician. Emphasizes in expressive playing and building confidence in students. Very methodical; will address an issue in various ways until he finds a way the student understands, and won't give up on a student. A life-long student himself, he's always learning new techniques to improve his practice. If you're looking to learn an instrument AND do something meaningful with that knowledge, I couldn't recommend him more.

Our 3rd grade class enjoyed a 6-week virtual class with Svend. He shared his knowledge and experience about jazz with us. We all learned a lot! I recommend Svend!
Carlos
Svend is one of the most genuine people I have met thus far. His passion for music and especially brass music is something rarely seen nowadays. I had the good fortune of meeting him at California State University Northridge when he conducted our brass ensemble there. His knowledge and experience being from Denmark gives him a very unique perspective about playing that few other musicians can compete with. Very highly recommended.

Svend is a very fun and engaging music teacher who always gives 110% to his students. He tailors his lessons to the needs of his individual students and it is always a pleasure to work with him.

"I can't compare Justin with any other teacher as my child has had only one trumpet instructor; but I believe they do not come much, if any better, than Justin! He is a natural teacher. He is punctual, caring, patient, encouraging, and most professional. I especially like the way he consistently corrects the "little" bad habits that may become a monumental problem later. I consider it an honor having my child being taught by Justin."

"Wade Baker was a great trumpet instructor. One thing I noticed and liked a lot from the moment I met him was that he connected with his students to create a better musical experience. Only good things came out of my lessons and rehearsals with him. I was only under his instruction for a year, but I grew a lot as a player with the help from him and also learned more about music than I ever did before. Wade is a very experienced player in multiple genres of music and he makes sure to use all of what he learned to teach his students. The only downside to being under his instruction was how busy he could be at times, but as a musician myself I completely understood. I would recommend Wade to anyone with how great my experience was with him."
