I teach relative pitch training, interval training, and chord progression recognition, as well as major and minor chordal ear training. I think the best musicians are made of a combination of training and natural ability or science and creativity. I teach sight-singing and improvisation on the piano, as well as music note recognition.
I have been teaching piano for almost 40 years. I have a NY state music teachers license, a masters in music therapy from NYU, and a bachelors in Music Education and AFFA certification. I try to keep the student self-motivated by using music that the student likes, as well as covering the basics. I use props which can be internalized by the student and gradually removed. For example, using stick-on letter names for the notes for a beginner and then removing them one at a time when the student feels ready. I am friendly and very easy going; I'm not a disciplinarian. If a student doesn't practice for some reason, we practice together at the next lesson. If a student doesn't want to practice at all, I can be very creative in motivating them. I don't believe in parents forcing their children to practice, because this tends to turn the child
off. Even though I tell parents that if your child doesn't want to play, please don't force it; I tend to keep students for many years (maybe it's because the student's self-motivation is so important to me and to their success). I also have a lot of experience teaching handicapped individuals as a certified music therapist. The music therapy has enabled me to be a better teacher in general because the therapeutic aspect comes up in all lessons, in one way or another. Music educators focus on the educational goals of music, while music therapists focus more on the therapeutic goals . A therapeutic goal might be increasing concentration span or self-confidence. These issues often need to be addressed in all lessons, and can only help the learning process.
*** Lesson Details *** I am a very easy-going teacher and aim to motivate you. As a music therapist, I have much experience in making each lesson a positive learning experience for you. Most of my professional experience is in teaching piano. Music intrigued me as a child because I saw learning to play as a great challenge. Because learning to play an instrument can be overwhelming to a student, I have learned through years of teaching to make it understandable - to break it down into steps that will leave you feeling a sense of accomplishment and thinking "I can do this". I prefer to teach piano lessons, all styles and levels, music theory, music therapy and beginning guitar. I also teach beginner vocal lessons, and lessons in how to keep the beat I must add that I have a busy schedule and if a student needs to cancel or reschedule a lesson, I need them to let me know at least 24 hours in advance, or the student will be charged for the lesson. I'm an animal lover and rescued a homeless cat who lives at the studio. I keep the studio very clean, but if you're allergic to cats, you may want to consider another teacher. Thank you
*** Studio Equipment *** Room before living room w/ piano computer, amp seating for parents, Baldwin Professional Upright Piano. Korg Pa3X keyboard workstation, Yamaha 88 key digital keyboard with Yamaha hammer action (meaning it feels and plays like a real piano - not mushy and easy to press like most keyboards; thereby allowing finger muscle development), Kustom amp, Yamaha 6 string guitar, Ibanez electric guitar, clarinet and a flute. I also have an enormous music library.
*** Travel Equipment *** I play for various events with the Korg Pa3x, where a one person band is required. I also play the acoustic grand pianos in several independent livings centers in Westchester County as an entertainer or to accompany sing-a-longs.
*** Specialties *** Classical, popular, classic rock, top 40, jazz. I teach a thorough classical approach and chord method playing for older students or others who simply want to learn to play quickly.
Roseann has a very pleasant personality and makes learning the guitar enjoyable and exciting for my six year old daughter. She gives clear and concise instructions that my daughter can understand and follow on her own while practicing at home. I would highly recommend Roesann to anyone interested in learning the guitar.
I have ten years experience teaching ear training, dictation, sight singing and all musical fundamentals. I have taught over fifty successful NYSSMA candidates as well as countless adults.
I believe in the extraordinary power of music to communicate, to inspire and, often, to heal. That belief inspires all my work.
My goal is to help you find the power to express express through singing your unique self. It doesn't matter whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's YOUR voice. It has its own sound and characteristics, its own particular beauty, and the world needs to hear you!
Whether you want to be a professional or audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to help you.
I'm a classically trained leading soprano who has had the great good fortune to sing masterpieces with such companies as the Caramoor Music Festival, Glim
merglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and the Manhattan School of Music.
But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, strict classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, yes, but also rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus or sound great on karaoke night.
Above all, the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.
*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.
*** Specialties ***
For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.
I am not a singer, but Nancy was able to make me feel at ease and give me instructions to bring a voice out of me. Very personable and professional, she has many different ideas and exercises to allow a voice to develop. I had one other voice teacher who never even had me learn a song. Nancy is a very capable and valuable teacher. I really can’t recommend her enough!

I love Nancy. I have never sung in front of anyone solo and was/am nervous. Nancy makes me feels at ease. She's amazing!
September 28, 2018
Nancy is great to work with. She really engages our daughter. Our 10 year old is always happy after her lesson. Nancy also is a clear communicator both with parents and our daughter, so we always know what is going on, and how things are working.

Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).
Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.
Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.
OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.
BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:
1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.
2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.
3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.
4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.
5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.
6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.
*** Studio Equipment *** PRIVATE HOME STUDIO: Keyboard, speakers (smartphone, iPod, iPad), CD player, tape recorder/player, digital recorder, music stand, mirror, laptop, sheet music selections, HD video camera, tripod, video editing software, audio editing software, USB microphone, and high speed WiFi internet. Other Specialties: Teaching acting technique for theatre-TV-Film (Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, & Meisner), performance skills, songwriting, and creating self-sufficient singers-actors-performers (Artist Development).
CANCELLATION: 48 hour lesson cancellation policy and emergencies (determined by Rachel) are handled on a case by case basis. All students (or their parents/guardian if under 18) who have scheduled vacations and other activities (meetings, parties, school shows, concerts, rehearsals...etc) that interfere with the student’s regularly scheduled lesson time, need to contact Rachel as soon as the vacation/other activity is scheduled but no later than two weeks in advanced before their missed regularly scheduled lesson to prevent from forfeiting the lesson.
MAKE-UPS: Make-Up lessons will be scheduled if time allows. No Make-Up lesson or class will be given to ‘no shows’ or “late cancellation”, and no extra time to extend their lesson will be given to students who are late to their lesson or class. If there is ever a time Rachel is running late, extra time will be given to make the lesson a full 60 minutes. If Rachel needs to reschedule, a Make-Up lesson will be scheduled as close to the same week as possible. Make-Up lessons are scheduled at Rachel’s discretion.
ONLINE LESSONS FOR IN-PERSON LESSON CLIENTS: In the event that the student is sick but still would like their lesson, an online lesson will be scheduled instead. Students can NOT come to their in person lesson sick, coughing, sneezing, with a runny nose, cold, flu, allergies, fever, etc. (This is to make sure no germs will be spread).
An online lesson will also be scheduled if there is bad weather, if a student is having car trouble, or any other reason for the student not being able to physically get to Rachel’s private studio during their normally scheduled lesson time. Online lessons are conducted through Classroom, FaceTime, Google, Hangouts, or Skype.
SCHEDULE: Lessons are weekly, on the same time/day of the week unless we have rescheduled or we have discussed in writing another lesson plan. If the student’s lesson falls on a holiday, we will either reschedule or if no other day is available, resume the following week.
LATENESS: If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.
SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave. Of course there will be times when the parent will be invited back in at the end of some of the lesson to showcase progress.
COMMUNICATION: Due to Rachel's normally scheduling students one right after another without breaks, being in the recording studio, performing, or being on set, the best way to contact her is through text AND email. Please ALWAYS leave messages when calling Rachel with your name, contact info, AND the reason you are calling. Please be specific. Thank you!
"I try to be as fair as possible to both parties when it comes to cancellations, rescheduling, lateness, and make ups. Have a concern or question? Just talk with me. I'm all about communication!" - Rachel
Racheal did a wonderful job helping my daughter with her stage presence.
January 29, 2018
My 9 yr. old daughter received singing lessons with Rachel. Rachel was SO wonderful, patient, and creative with every session with her. She was constantly coming up with different ways to keep her engaged and was always reassuring her to increase her confidence. She gave great constructive feedback on how my daughter was doing and what she can work on to improve. I give her 5 stars! Thanks so much, Rachel!
October 3, 2017
Overall, very impressed. She is direct and doesn't tell you something you want to hear. Her evaluation process is well rounded and planned. She puts together a great curriculum to know what to expect in the coming lessons. Very easy going person and makes you feel completely comfortable at the initial lessons.
I explain that having a 'good ear' can actually be taught. There are certain musical sounds which follow predictable patterns. If these patterns can be learned and internalized, then you will have a good ear.
My name is Chris B. and I've been playing music for most of my life.
The best lesson that I've personally learned is that a musician is never done learning. Once you start believing that you know everything there is to know about your instrument then you've stopped growing musically. Personally, I've also learned that I enjoy sharing my knowledge of music with others and exposing students to new techniques and concepts.
I strongly believe that these traits are the most important aspects of teaching music to others. No matter how advanced my playing skills might progress, I’ll always be able to relate to any type of student because I’m still learning something new everyday!
Awesome first lesson for our 14 year old daughter! She’s pumped to continue with Chris, and we’re pleased with the entire process so far.
June 26, 2019
I have been taking lessons from Chris for 5 years. He is very open to learn and teach all styles of music. in turn, allowing me learn and play music I though i never would. His guidance in "the technology" of music is also greatly appreciated.
The learning experience with Chris is top notch, never an issue with communication or punctuality.Always able to move around his busy schedule for the "adult" student.
I want to thank Chris for allowing to find my "Soul Mustard" He is the best you can find
April 11, 2019
Chris is an awesome instructor! He was patient and professional. I was truly a beginner and Chris helped me every step of the way. I would recommend him to anyone looking to pick up a guitar or further enhance your skills. Thanks for all the help!
I teach ear training using the movable doe solfege system. This system is what is used at most contemporary music schools. It is ideal for jazz, and pop as well as country and other similar styles. If you plan to attend a classical conservatory this will most likely not be the system used.
Hi! I'm a recent graduate of Berklee College of music where I majored in professional music. This included music theory and guitar instruction, as well as reading and writing music notation and charts in different styles. I also play frequently, including shows at The 9:30 Club, The Howard Theater, Shamrockfest, The Black Cat, Half Street Fairgrounds. and Gaylord National resort. For the past three years I have been teaching guitar lessons to student of all ages, with excellent results! I always keep the students interested by teaching songs they are excited to learn, while also making sure that they continue to grow as a guitarist and musicians. Lessons can be in Rock, Jazz, or Pop styles, and on acoustic or electric guitar. Music theory is included to the extent that the student and/or parents are interested. Lessons can be at my hous
It was an excellent lesson! I really learned a lot from it. I was able to learn one song and start on a second on my first lesson only! Definitely recommend Sam to anyone thinking about picking up the guitar!
June 21, 2018
Sam is awesome! He listened to my learning objectives and background, he instructs clearly (and kindly), and I’m super stoked for my next lesson.
I teach you how to understand what you are hearing in music. I then teach you how to translate that into the notes you need to play. I also give you improvisation techniques to take your ear playing to the next level.

After working with Erica she is front and center on stage and enjoys being in all the school performances. Erica is the best!! She is so supportive and kind and giving of herself and her talent. "I brought my son to Randy two years ago to see if he would be a good fit as an instructor.
I had always wanted to learn to play the piano myself, but
thought that because I never learned (and probably never would), I would make sure my son learned how!
My son is not only well on his way to learning to play the piano by by ear, he is also having a blast recording his own music! Randy always emails out a recap of the lesson along with things to work on for the upcoming week. I love these recaps because I can listen to the music they recorded and know what my son should be working on. It's great!
I always remembered hearing about what learning to play an instrument was like when I was younger (probably why I never tried to learn), an old blue hair wapping your hand with a ruler when you did not practice enough.
This is not what it is like at all with Randy. Lessons can be as engaging as you want them to be. Randy has a special talent to know what to focus on every week based on how his student is feeling.
I know this because I have witnessed several lessons where my son has been a real bundle of energy bouncing off the walls and Randy was able to reel him in and make progress for the day!
I have enjoyed watching my son grow as a musician so much , that I started taking lessons from Randy about a year ago. My favorite part about the process is I told Randy up front that I wanted to play November Rain by Guns -n- Roses, (no easy task). He did not tell me that it was an impossible, or that it was a bad idea... He just drew the sheet music and we got after it. It has been awesome learning my favorite song along and at the same time learning how to play the piano by ear.
You will begin to listen to all music differently after spending time with Randy, that is a fact.
I have always been a lover of music, but it goes to the next level when you start to gain an understanding and a feeling of how the music is put together.
I know that Randy is able to look down the road with each student and know how exactly how to teach each individual because everyone responds differently.
Randy really does a terrific job making sure you know that it is not IF you will reach your goals, but WHEN.
I am confident that we will be his students as long as he will have us, and I highly recommend you give him a try! You won't be disappointed!"
"If you are aurally challenged when it comes to intervals and harmonic progressions, I definitely recommend tutoring. Michelle was very patient during our
lessons and had different tips on how to identify certain progressions, which I appreciated. We also worked on complex rhythms together. It was actually really fun. She's very kind, resourceful, and an excellent tutor."
"Wanted to work on my ear training and I was recommended to Emi from a friend in Texas. We set up a call and I learned more in one hour then I have my whol
e musical career"
"Carlos has been an excellent mentor, instructor in my music journey so far. He has guided me in not only academic areas, but also career and business area
I still remember his Ear Training lessons from 8 years ago, which was how I met him. He opened up my perception to music in ways I didn't know existed. To this day I continue to learn from him and I will forever be grateful to him.
He is one of the kindest people I have met and genuinely cares for his students growth."
"Beautiful voice and beautiful human and beautiful teacher!"
"Terrific teacher and teaching method for ear training. Great brush up on my skills!"
"Stephanie is an amazing teacher! She has helped me so much with basic ear training! I was worried about learning basic ear training online but her method
is great and I have made so my progress in a short amount of time spent with her already! I highly recommend her for lessons!"
